======================================================================== A MAN SENT FROM GOD by A.W. Tozer ======================================================================== Summary: A.W. Tozer's sermon emphasizes the humility and divine purpose of John the Baptist as a model for contemporary believers. Topics: "Authenticity in Faith", "Humility" Scripture References: Isaiah 40:3, Matthew 3:1-3, Matthew 11:11, Matthew 21:26, Mark 1:2-4, Luke 7:28, John 1:6-8, John 1:29, John 3:30, Acts 19:4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DESCRIPTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A.W. Tozer emphasizes that John the Baptist was a man sent from God, contrasting him with contemporary expectations of religious leaders. Rather than seeking fame or acceptance, John lived authentically, unbothered by societal norms and expectations. He did not conform to the pressures of modernity, instead pointing others to Jesus, the Lamb of God. Tozer critiques the modern tendency to 'adjust' individuals to fit societal standards, arguing that true purpose comes from a soul aligned with God. John's humility and focus on Christ serve as a powerful example for believers today. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONTENT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Bible record is very plain when it assures us that John the Baptist was a man sent from God. Our generation would probably decide that such a man ought to be downright proud of the fact that God had sent him. We would urge him to write a book. Seminary leaders would line up to schedule him as guest lecturer. Actually, John the Baptist would never have fit into the contemporary religious scene in our day - never! He did not keep his suit pressed. He was not careful about choosing words that would not offend. He did not quote beautiful passages from the poets. The doctors of psychiatry would have quick advice for him: "John, you really need to get adjusted to the times and to society!" "Adjust"-that is a modern word I have come to hate. It was never an expression used to speak about human beings until we forgot that man has a soul. Now we have weird guys with mental "screwdrivers" adjusting one person a little tighter and another a little looser. John needed no adjustment. He gladly stepped down, so that all eyes could turn to Jesus, the Lamb of God! ======================================================================== Source: https://sermonindex.net/speakers/aw-tozer/a-man-sent-from-god/ ========================================================================
