======================================================================== HEBREWS 10 by Don McClure ======================================================================== Summary: Jesus is the perfect sacrifice and the fulfillment of the Old Testament, and we should no longer rely on the old covenant but on the new covenant of grace. Duration: 46:13 Topics: "Atonement", "Willful Sin" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DESCRIPTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The sermon transcript discusses the repetitive nature of the priestly sacrifices in the Old Testament. It emphasizes that despite the daily and frequent offerings, they were ineffective in truly atoning for sins. The speaker then transitions to the concept of willful sinning after receiving knowledge of the truth, stating that there is no more sacrifice for such sins. The sermon concludes with a personal anecdote about the speaker's mother and the lesson of consequences for wrongdoing. Throughout the sermon, the speaker references verses from the Bible, including Jesus' teachings in the Sermon on the Mount. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONTENT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of those things can never With those sacrifices with which they offered year by year continually make the comers therein too perfect For then would they not have ceased to be offered Because the worshipers once purged should have no more conscience of sins But those sacrifices were a remembrance again made of sins every year For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith this of course of Jesus sacrifice and offerings thou wouldest not But a body thou has prepared me in burnt offering and sin offerings for sin Thou hast no pleasure then said I lo I come in the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will Oh God Above when he said sacrifice and offerings and burnt offerings and offerings for sin Thou wouldest not neither has pleasure therein which are offered by the law Then said he lo I come to do thy will Oh God He take it the way the first that he may establish the second by the witch We are sanctified through the offering of the blood of Jesus once For all let's pray Lord. We do not just thank you for your word We ask that as we turn to it this morning that you would just put the focus of our hearts upon you You're worthy of all of our attention 100% of it and Lord of your word that you would feed us with it We ask that you would take it and strengthen every heart every life here even today in Jesus name. Amen You may be seated Well as we have been going through the book of Hebrews and of course Again, and again and again I want to remind us that this is a book written to a bunch of Hebrew believers who had come to Christ and yet We're now being pressured by the Judaizers to go back to Judaism Back to the law back to Moses back to the sacrifices back to the temple you know back to the high priest and the priest being the intercessor of all of these things and The writer of Hebrews wants to tell him he says I want you to know there remaineth no more sacrifice these things they used to Work, but they will never work again once Christ has come in other words in the Old Testament times You went, you know, you went there to the to the temple you went to the priest you bought your offering because there was a consciousness of sin and a desire that your sins would be put away and Essentially in the Old Testament, by the way They came to Christ very much the same way that you and I do by faith. We'll be looking at this more in chapter 11, but They essentially we look backwards in faith to the cross. They looked forward in faith to the cross They were looking forward to the ultimate sacrifice They were looking forward to the day that the Lamb of God would come and take upon himself the sins of the world But in looking forward to it by faith knowing they were sinners They came with this sacrifice this offering this lamb and offered it looking for the day and waiting for the day that God would one day Offer his sacrifice bring his full Wonderful perfect lamb into the world to take the sins of the whole world upon himself So they look forward and they used all of these things in the tabernacle all of these offerings and these sacrifices Acknowledging their own sin their need for a priest their need for an intercessor their recognition There was a veil between them and God That something someday until God's perfect land came and opened up and rent the veil that they could not go in But they were all of this was looking forward as he tells us here in chapter 10 He says for the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of things It can never with those sacrifices with which they offered year by year continually make the comers there unto perfect These things never worked. They said they were merely pictures They were an image of that which was to come but it was something because it was an image that by faith This was what God had offered They did it until finally all of these things as I have mentioned in the past to me the whole Tabernacle and all that went on it was almost to me like a play, you know Maybe like a Broadway play or something that every night they rehearse it over and over and over Everybody has their part they have all of this stage set up there and it tells a whole story and It is one that in a sense in the Old Testament what they were doing times under the law They went through this act in a sense. They had these players They dressed up in this garb of beauty and holiness and perfection and wonder they went in through this veil Once a year they offered these sacrifices. They did all of these things This was all there a play that went before the people over and over and I don't mean to play to reduce this because it Was a glorious perfect Flawless play in a sense, but it was wonder we would prepare them that when finally the real act came The reality of what it was when the real lamb came and the real priest came and the real work of God came they would Have seen the play and understood it so well That they would have realized that's him. That's it He's the fulfillment of all these things that this was once the image of now those things once worked Because the reality hadn't come the writer of Hebrews is saying I want you to know that from this point on The play used to work going to the play looking at the play watching the play again Entering into it Lord cleanse me wash me forgive me having the priest go in and say present me fault faultless You know and I'll take my offering take my sacrifice it worked It made them acceptable before God, but as they were acceptable before God they were still Just doing the play that finally when now Christ has come he now the Lord says it won't work anymore Because now if you do it you're denying the reality of the play and its message when now the real you know picture has come by turning back to the old and Forgetting the new you're denying that the new was the fulfillment of the old so you don't need the old any longer He is saying here and as we have seen in chapter 7 8 9 and 10 is the chapter 7 If you'll recall was one there were Jesus is the perfect priest as you may recall as we went through that in Chapter 8 Jesus is the perfect covenant in the new covenant no longer of law But of grace in chapter 9 Jesus is the perfect sanctuary of our hearts our lives now us living in communion With him not a building out there and today Jesus is the perfect sacrifice here in chapter 10 He wants to tell us and essentially here as we in the in these first verses of the chapter Now he wants to say here not only ceases. I want you to realize that Jesus fulfills the whole play He's the priest in the play. He's the sanctuary in the play. He's the the covenant of the play He's the fulfillment of every part of the story of the Old Testament in a sense He says now I want you to see that Jesus is the sacrifice of all sacrifices He is the complete total perfect sacrifice for he says that in verse 2 he says for then if they had not Cease to he says if in other words of all these these things that were an image in chapter 10 verse 1 He says they can never Halfway through verse 1 those sacrifices. They offered year by year continually make the the comers there unto perfect. They never worked They never actually did it in the sense of where it made them perfect It just prepared their hearts for God maybe and he says for if it had made them perfect if it had done its work He says verse 2. He says for then would they not have ceased to be offered? In other words say if it did his job, why do you every year have to go through it again and again and again? It's something there. He says down in verse 11. He says for every priest and daily ministering the offerings oftentimes every day It says oftentimes Repeatedly frequently over and over in other words This play went on night after night after night day after day after day every morning the priest got up every morning He went out he put on his outfit put on, you know went into the theater, you know You went through the motions did the sacrifices again played the play for the congregation again. Here's the story of love Here's the story of mercy. Here's the story of forgiveness. Here's how you know, the sacrifice is made and he says but it never worked She never actually did anything or else they could have stopped it. It would they they would have ceased to be offered and Because that the worshipers once purged should have no more conscious of sin But it was something every time you went you saw the play But you walked away and you're still very conscious of your sin and he says everybody verse 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year every time Everything the whole story says you are a terrible sinner Every time there's this consistent conscious always going on batteried at you Endlessly repeatedly frequently endlessly day after day this consciousness of sin It never really worked. In other words every time they went it was a remembrance of sin one of the most wonderful things when Jesus Christ when he offered himself on the cross as it says here as we already read he Did it once and once and for all? It was something there an act never have to repeat it again a work never have to be done again Absolutely once and once and for all total complete when he said it is finished It was finished Absolutely completely done away with and now you know the wonderful thing that Jesus has to tell us From this point on is that Jesus about the you know communion now. He says you do this often in Remembrance of me in the Old Testament. It was always a remembrance of sin in The New Covenant Jesus said I want you not to come remembering your sins. I Want you to come remembering me and often remember who I am This week I was reading I love morning and evening by Charles Spurgeon and he comments on do this in remembrance of me when Jesus said this and Spurgeon's comment on it It says it seems then that Christians may forget Christ or why would he have said do this in remembrance of me? There could be no need for that. There'd be no need for this loving exhortation if there were not the fearful supposition that our memories might prove treacherous Nor is this bear supposed as this a bear supposition it is alas Too well confirmed in our own experience as a not a possibility, but as a lamentable fact it appears almost impossible that those who have been redeemed by the blood of the dying Lamb and Loved with an everlasting love by an eternal son of God that should they should ever forget the gracious Savior But if startling to the ear it is alas too apparent to the eye to allow us to deny the crime Forget him who would never forget us forget him who poured out his blood for our sins Forget him who loved us even under the death. Can it be possible? Yes, and it is not only possible but conscious confesses to us too sadly a fault of with all of us the cross where one would think that memory would linger and an Unmindfulness would be an unknown intruder. It is desecrated by the feet of forgetfulness Does not your conscience say this is true? Do you not find yourself forgetful of Jesus? Some creature steals away your heart and you are unmindful of him upon your affection that where it ought to be set Is that not true? How often it is what is it about our nature that we forget Christ and his love and in this total? Forgiveness that he has for us and this Spurgeon says you would think something this awesome this wonderful would never be forgotten How is it possible that a human you know who's come before God who never forgets us? How could we possibly forget him and yet we do we forget his love we forget his blood we forget him He says you do this often you be cleansed again and again and again in remembrance of me not your sin and The wonderful thing how it ought to be. Is it not the way, you know, it's so true of us How many of us how many times it is some you know are just earthly daily business problems They take away our attention that should set our eyes fixed always upon crosses upon the cross and yet we're gathered in business We're wearied by that How many of us some trial may be in your home your marriage is stolen away the thought that ought to be greater and more wonderful That Christ has loved me. He's forgiven me. I'll never forget that. That's the all the other issues of life They come and they go they're here for a moment. It's a trial. That's a problem It's in this or it's that but he should capture my attention always But how easily it is that something can come along and all of a sudden Our mind is off the glorious work of Christ on the cross. His forgiveness. His mercy is love for us in the fact that we are absolutely forgiven Absolutely pure if you're God's child to realize that is what it is He has done for us and it is done there simply as he quotes here going back to Psalm 40 But also now reiterated here. It says, you know that when he came into the world What an amazing thing, you know to me here, I suppose one of the most, you know astounding sorts of things But the amazing thing here is that Jesus his whole attitude notice here in verse 5 It says wherefore when he came into the world He said imagine this isn't to me always one of the most astounding things When he came into the world when he was born the day he was born When Jesus Christ the second person to try in Godhead was offered to the father a body and he took it up therefore him You know in the womb of Mary, but there is then he took a residence up in the six seven eight pound body Is he then took it when he came into the world? He said now who says anything when they came into the world other than Wow, you know or something but the but here I mean when you know What even thought how old were you before you even remember your first thought, you know? I know there's some people that take you back to the womb, you know and other stuff on your you know On your thoughts there and stuff, but I mean really seriously, what memory do you have? What did intellectual Mary? You know, I thought this and I said this But to think here Jesus born of the Holy Spirit not with a fallen human nature at all within him But with a life and the maturity and all the knowledge of heaven and earth there within that little six seven eight the pound body They're just born of God They're telling me that anybody that is born of God has got the capacity on that point of birth To be able to turn right to heaven and say sacrifice and offerings and burn offerings for sin That has no pleasure But a body thou has prepared me then said I load is written to me in the volume of the book I delight to do thy will oh my god. Thy law is written within my heart I mean you think of him being able to turn there to his father and say it's all yours My life is yours limb is yours every behavior every thought every action Of my entire life from the first breath to the last It's yours and to offer such an offering and sacrifice all of which there is a lamb slain before the foundation the world is It took up residence his ultimate destiny from the moment of his birth as his face was set like a flint to Jerusalem He was he had come to die He had come to offer himself the ultimate body Sacrifice ever for the sins of the world once and for all as the writer of Hebrews says here That's how glorious it is and something there that ought to take your heart in mind in such a ways that I realize That my sins are forgiven. My sins are cleansed How I wish that if we could just as Christians grasp this not because of any works of righteousness Which we have done any efforts any maturity any goodness anything within us? But because the very moment that we came to Christ and were born of him We were as clean as we'll ever be a billion light-years into eternity That's the power of the blood of Christ will never be any better than we are right now positionally before God our standing before God Flawless, I think one of the most tragic things is as I see Christians who are constantly, you know All they have is the remembrance of their sins as Hebrews tells here the remembrance of their failing their remembrance of their inadequacies the remembrance of what they're not the remembrance of what we say and what we do and all the evidence of our human weaknesses and we allow that evidence to Override and prevail the glorious thing where our heart ought to remember Christ Remember his work Remember today. I am clean if you're here and you're today you're a Christian you've accepted Christ and I'm not asking to raise your hand But if I said how many of yours, you know, you're a Christian and I would imagine most every hand You know would go up and yet I wonder how many of those hands also would I say and how many of you? remember him and are absolutely clean and pure before God this very moment then people may look around and say well, I don't know if I was Wait for somebody to start and then one then to see what people do when they look at them and said well Looks like it's popular, you know or something, but how many of us would really truly? Have that sense within us, but if I can truly stand before the cross If that is what prevails in my heart of life above all other issues in things That is where my hope and my righteousness and my eternal life stands Then my hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness. That's the issue in my life if I've understood that Then once and for all once and for all I'm forgiven now. I just got to learn how to grow up Now I've just got to learn the application of those things now I've just got to learn how to deal with some of those things, but that's the great lesson that God wants us to learn This wonderful place that we have in him Incidentally, I might also make another mention here in verse 10 It says in verse 10 by the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all here The Bible says that you are sanctified before God That means you know that you are set apart unto God you are clean You are his and that is in a once act that is done You do the interesting thing though about every one of us as Christians is that every Christian whether you know or not? We all live in two places at the same time and we live first of all positionally before God and That is that our position is in Christ We are every one of us if you're here today and you walked in here and you're a Christian you you know You sat down where you are, but let me tell you also sit someplace else. You are seated in high heavenly places in Christ You are somebody now you are seated now Jesus He said who presents us faultless before the Father and he ever lives to make intercession for us and he presents us for us You are absolutely perfect in where you really sit where you really stand Where you really belong you're in Christ. That's where I am every one of us Our position yet. We also have another place and that's our human experience And it's as if to me I almost think if I could draw you a graph if you had here your life until you know Up until the day you receive Christ It's just like if you've ever seen one of these heart monitors, you know in a hospital when there's somebody you to go in and Visit them and you watch the thing You know the thing goes across, you know Well, the Bible says that we are all dead in our trespasses and sins before we come to Christ It's as if your heart monitor just goes we You know from them when you're born you're born with a heart monitor. You're singing Nothing nothing and yet there's you're dead the wage of sin is death not will be we've already received our wages When we were born in Adam But the moment in time that I accept Christ all of a sudden this heart monitor. There's absolutely flat dead Immediately just perfectly goes up in this now perfectly alive Absolutely flawless I am presented Faultless in Christ. That is my position. I like I said a billion light-years into eternity. You go out here. I won't be different. I Will the the the interesting thing is though is now I start to grow and now the heart monitor starts looking for activity of maturity This is my daily experience now of my position Incidentally the world looks at you and I all the time and says these Christians are a bunch of hypocrites But just stinking hypocrites, you know, they they they think they're all this, you know, you know Be righteous wonderful people and stuff, but they're no different. We are they just phonies and let me tell you the word They're right. We are hypocrites, but not hypocrites the way the world thinks we're hypocrites We are hypocrites because of the fact that we are absolutely perfect and don't know it We're perfect and don't believe it. We're perfect and don't rest in it We're perfect and don't allow it to grow all the only thing that has happened in maturity in a Christian and the degree that anybody is Mature is the degree that they realize this is who I am perfect in Christ And now by faith, I'm just letting it happen in me. I didn't earn it. I didn't do it But yeah, we're you so every one of us are hypocrites but not by the world looks and says you think you're better than you are and Jesus said you're a hypocrite because you are better than you think in me and That here but knowing I am sanctified But the interesting thing is is that over here in verse 10, I mean verse 14 now The same chapter it says for by one offering hath he perfected forever them that are sanctified now if you haven't have the living They're the new King James. It's actually there's a difference between in verse 10 It says there is this by which we are sanctified. That's our sanctified once and for all a done deal Verse 14 if you have the new King James, which is more accurate because it does the verb better in verse 14 It says by one offering he has perfected forever them that are being sanctified See a Christian is somebody that he is sanctified perfect and Yet he is also being sanctified experientially in his position one of them is my position in Christ the other is my learning to experience it and And learning to grow I am beat to be sanctified daily now It tells me in verse 14 because this is my position. He says now let me do it every day in you Let me now apply those things The year that you know, the writer of Hebrews is simply telling us that Jesus blood it is cleansed in this forgiveness positionally before God But now I need the daily forgiveness now. I need to you know, they'd be constantly cleansed. It should be simple to us You know, there's something there, you know, I look at yeah, you just look at here this church you walked in hopefully it's clean today But let me tell you something Every time you people leave here It's a mess You know, we clean it all up and then you come back in here and then and then every time We look at it at the end of Sunday and the place is a mess You messed it up. The chairs are not in order. There's you go out here. You know, you walk in Bring in dirt grind it into the carpet you do and then you let your kill you get doughnuts and you get coffee and you Your kids rub it in their face and then they drop it and then they squish it so nobody can see it And they run down the halls with their fingers in each, you know after then put all the marks on there They go into the you know, the nursery and they stick it up They do I mean all this place when you leave this place It is something that it is that it we we have to go and cleanse it again We have to sanctify it again. We've got to redo the whole thing. But is that not what the buildings for? But we don't have to rebuild it again. We have to have a new building. You have to tear it down He just cleansed what's become dirty. That's the thing. God wants us to come Lord cleanse What's dirty sanctify in my life what is not right what needs to be put right? But it is something via that's exactly the same way your body and mine is the Lord gives you a body that we've already seen Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Here's now He says the act that was in the sanctuary before in the tabernacle now It's in you your body is the sanctuary Christ is the priest There his know that the Covenant is not one of law But it now grace is he now within your body wants to live within and now he says you live within your body and every Day you get up and live just as if it was your own home There he says and you go from room to room and you behave and you you know, you grow up in your body You're a little adolescent go through puberty go through teenage years Fall in love get married and every time you move from room to room to room through the experiences of life But Jesus all the time. He says now this is your body I'm the priest within it and as you grow up I am there gonna go from room to room to room all of your life and want to clean it I want to teach you I want to mature you I want to teach you how to be a little child then I want to teach you how to be an adolescent then I want to Teach you maturity how to love I want to then bring you into marriage and you realize how you don't love You'll have the desire for it the inability to do it But then you'll need me and always we go into room after room of life. You'll clutter it up. You'll mess it up You'll do it wrong. I'll cleanse it but all the time over and over the Bible the Proverbs says but where there's where there's you know No, oxen, you know, the crib is clean. You know, I mean the stall is clean And he says there's there's if there's oxen in a stall There's going to be a mess and if there is a human being living in your body getting up every day You will make a mess Every day just by living It's you but if there's nobody living there's no mess There's funny way when one room of our house. We've got a room. It's a guest room Our kids are all gone and it's a guest room nice room In fact, you can go to it virtually anytime You can open up the door and walk in and it is perfect. The only the reason is perfect is nobody's been in there You know until you because he and each time we have somebody they you know You can you right now if you open up you can see nobody's been there You can actually see the you know, the vacuum marks on the floor. You can see I mean you go over there The the linen is clean. Nobody slept there. There's everything is perfect. You look at it and say well This is the perfect room Yes, because nobody's been in it But all you have to do is walk in it and immediately just by going into it your track something into it Are you are you will in and so also in our own lives? Every day by living when you when the God put you in a marriage and none of us loves perfect None of us is right. We go and we mess it up me to the degree that we don't know the sacrifice We don't know his love. We don't apply his cleansing But he still says hey, I'll clean it up every day I'm your sanctifier I'll help you and you know I just want you to go on about the business of growing up and growing up and growing up and growing up I'll teach you how to raise children. I'll teach you how to do this. I'll teach you how to do all of these things I'll teach you how to go through trials. I'll teach you how to wait. I'll teach you how to trust me I'll treat you or teach you all of these things and then when you fail and you run down the hall and you make a mess We'll clean it up And you when you you know, and when you you track something in and grind it in I'll clean it up. I Love you. I forgive you. I will help you in Here because the in that when that we understand this If I realize that Jesus Christ looks at me no matter where I'm at in life You may be an adolescent may be married. You may be a parent grandparent, but none of us are perfect You know, all of us are hopefully Longing, but every one of us look and realize this didn't still not come out, right? And the Lord says no Not yet. We'll in heaven not till then but until then I'll help you. I'll be with you in The result of all this in verse 19, but if I honestly understand That it is once and for all it is total it is complete. He says in verse 19 He says having therefore brethren boldness to enter into the Holy by the blood of Jesus by a new and living way Which he hath consecrated for us through the veil that is to say his flesh and having a high priest Over the house of God here. He looks now and he says listen He says because you have this perfect standing because you were Sanctified and cleansed the moment you came and now because daily he's cleansing you daily He's he's going through the house, you know behind you as you go from room to room vacuuming cleaning Washing, you know this unbelievable priest housekeeper this wonderful priest cleanser who just goes behind freshening up You go into a room and you just think it up, you know your sweat you do whatever it is You leave a mess here you track this stuff there and it as you just go in and try to exist in it He says if you've got somebody so wonderful like this therefore what boldness we should have to enter right in to the very presence of God by the blood of Jesus Christ a new and living way that he is now given to us having a great high priest there over the house of God He tells us there, you know that we ought to be ones If we all understand that then to respond to that in verse 22, he says let us draw near with a full, you know a true Heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water Here the Lord looks and he says come on Just let me let's just get in clean the house up Let's get in here and he says let's see, you know, have your heart sprinkled from the evil conscience, you know From all of our sins Lord cleanses whole place out here. Please wash me with pure water in a verse 23 He says let us also if he says let us not only draw near and then he says let us hold fast to the profession of our faith without wavering He says now drawn here Forget you the fact you're a sinner Remember Jesus who he is draw near to him hold fast to your profession of faith. Nothing wavering How often is we walk into a room of our life we walk into a relationship in our life and it's a mess We were just in the you know Just like our house you go in the kids or this or that or or our own Relationships and we go and we open the door and we just look at that area of our life and say it's a mess But the Lord looks at us and he says listen I want you to hold fast there of your faith without wavering sometimes you open the door look in a room of your heart your life and just say This is crazy Look at me. I'm pathetic Look at the mess in my life And you know where the the trial or the test of the struggle says who needs Christianity who needs to go on this way? And he says you do Every one of us Lord help me Cleanse me draw me Verse 24 he says then another the third let us he said let us consider one another to revoke unto love and the good works Now he says now if you're going around the house of your life, so to speak you're letting me cleanse it. I love you I forgive you. We're done with the fact you have a housekeeper. You're done with the issue. Can we clean it? You're done with the issue. Of course he can and yes, I'll make mistakes and yes, he'll cleanse it And that's part of the daily business. I Know it's some of you mothers. I wonder how many of you mothers. I'm not sure I wonder how many your mothers go through and you work all day you clean the whole place up. The kids are gone Everybody's gone You just got the entire day and you look at it at the end of the day and then ten minutes after that the door Opens up woman come the kids and you're in tears. You look what they did to my house You know, so you just watch let me tell you the Lord never feels that way In a sense, he's eternally he looks there and he says I want the kids and I want the husband and I want the family And I'm going to raise him here and there'll be a lot of messes But it's for the family That's how the Lord looks at it. My mother She grew up in a family She just had a sister and her and a kind of a you pretty well-to- do sort of place and she had these little Porcelains and all this stuff that you do when you only have a sister and you got this beautiful House with the French provincial furniture and you got all the little glass little Decorations and the ballerinas or whatever she had all this stuff and then she gets married and she brings all these things into her house Of which now and I'm gonna set up a home like I know my own and as she sets up the home Here she puts out all of her little things and then she starts having children and in four years she had four children the first three of which were boys and She watched these boys as soon as they they could start to walk not me But my two brothers did this stuff, but they would they could walk right by a coffee table She said in their hands were just the height of the time and there were all of her little glass things and she would just go Why did we just walk right across this thing and all of her stuff just boom? Shattered and there is she decided do I want my glass things or do I want my children? She killed us and kept the glass. But anyway, no, but she but it's something there. She decided she had a decision. I want a family And she put the other stuff away Boxed it up until we're gone Brought it out until we had children and she put it all away again You know, but the and decide that's what I want. Well that Jesus looks at you. I Love you And I want you though now because draw near come home. Let's clean it up Let's do what we ought to be doing and let's grow up and let's get clean But then he also gives a final exhortation with this as well after he says draw near And he said, you know and they says let us hold fast our profession And there and he says and let us consider one another to provoke one another says unto love and good works He says now there. He says that when you start walking around the house yourself and you start growing up and you start maturing You start provoking one another to love and good works. You start helping clean the house You start loving one another you start in your part of maturing just like a parent raises a child for a certain period of time Oh, you know, you know little kid, you know drops a donut You just pick up the donut some of you you walk out there You know kids get a donut and the kid will get all over their face and down there The kid doesn't even know it. All he knows is what he got in his mouth He never saw the rest of it, but you also as a mother you say that's fine And you may pick it up or squeeze it, you know crush it or hide it You know, whatever you're gonna do with it, but you're not gonna get upset with a kid, but there'll be a day you will But then but you look at the kid and say you got to grow up. You got to start doing good You've got to start provoking and carrying on your life to love and good works provoking others to these things maturing you need to do that and But then he tells us now here in verse 26 now he says and this is a verse that gives a lot of people trouble Hopefully we'll explain it as we close and he says for if we willfully Or sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth the remainder no more sacrifice for sins But in a certain fearful looking for judgment and fiery indignation Which shall devour the adversaries he that despised Moses law died without mercy under two or three witnesses How much of a sore punishment suppose ye that shall be brought worthy? who have trodden underfoot the Son of God and have counted the blood of the Covenant with with he was sanctified and An unholy thing has done this despite under the spirit of grace here. He looks there and he says now he says listen You're clean. You're forgiven. You're perfect draw near enter in you know to his presence and Go on in the veil has been opened into God's presence There's nothing to hold you back and now let your life as you do draw near and as you are walking with him and as you're Learning to provoke one another and to love into good works. He says now I now want to tell you though He says for the person that sins willfully after you have now received the knowledge of this After now, there's a point he says, you know better, you know, you've received a knowledge of the truth He says that remaineth no more sacrifice for sins now First of all, it's one of the things that oftentimes people do with this They think this is like the unpardonable sin or now you are now condemned to death. No, you're not condemned Eternally, they look at this in this that is not what it suggests in the Old Testament There was all the sacrifices that God offered the children of Israel Therefore sins that were committed in you know in ignorance sins that were committed in haste But interestingly enough if you go through the Old Testament, there is not a single offering for willful sin In other words if you go out and you do something willfully Not an offering for that now You then both two or three or more witnesses You're now brought before the judges there of Moses and you are now going to pay for whatever it is that you did Justice will happen There's not an offering. You said oh here here just forgive it. You know, I'm sorry about it now Moses and everybody says oh Okay, you got you know, no if you did something willfully and wrong to the degree you did it there was a law There was a standard and you will pay for it. You will do it There's not a sacrifice to cover that it all didn't have nothing to do with can you be forgiven before God? Can you be loved by God? Are you still as child? Can you run to him for that? But that doesn't mean but you will also pay Whatever it is that you did wrong There will be justice for it. And this is precisely what God is simply saying here If you go do something willfully to another person if you go willfully know that you have done something that is wrong There is nothing there that now you will just simply put it right By whatever standard there is Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount given to God's children given to you given to Christians You know he says the agree with an adversary quickly while thou art in the way with him and He says unless thine adversary go and turn to thee over the judge the judge turns thee over to the jailer the jailer throws You in prison and he says I tell you you will not come out from tents until you have paid the uttermost farthing In other words Jesus there to his own children. He says listen you do wrong to somebody you'll pay for it Whatever it is, you will stand for it. Do I love you? Are you can you be forgiven? Can you go on? No, you will just have it and see the thing is is if we willfully The Lord looks at us and just like for example with your children You may you know watch your children today or you go home With your children that when they don't have a knowledge of the truth and they spill stuff and they make a mess in the house You don't do anything to him. You just cleaned it up and just say here, but then there's a point you realize Johnny knows He just made a mess He can calculate that he has a knowledge of the truth now if he willfully sits there with that donut and says mom You will Say there's no sacrifice for that Johnny, you know little Johnny Well now you he will be thrown in prison until he is paid the uttermost farthing He will have a quiet time or a timeout as you now call them these days in the Old Testament We call them beatings, but the you know, but there were something where you will you will be handled There will be judgment and this is what he is saying. The Lord looks at us and he says listen If you know how you ought to be living, I want to go in and cleanse your heart I want to cleanse your marriage. I want to teach you how you live with your wife. I Want to teach you how to love your children. Okay, you're young. You're you're just married. You don't know how to do it I'll be patient with you But there's a point where I mean look at you and say husband now, you're not you're not treating your wife and it's willful Let me tell you something some of you may be sitting here today and right now you're in prison You're paying your wife knows and you know how you ought to be treating her and you're sitting here looking at me like You're not talking about me and your wife is sitting there said I love this sermon, you know or something But it's something where it because and you're paying for it You're paying for it in your own prison sense. The Lord gives you a timeout You set you aside in your own sorrow and your own shame your own willful realization, you know there he says I want to end Yeah, I've got to bring you whatever it is the place where you say God. I can't stand it. I Went out of this prison the guilt. I Want to be back help me in my marriage. What do you want me to do? I want you to do what I told you to do. I want you to hand to your children this way I want you to provoke one another to love and good works not a you know You walk into the room and you're old enough. You shouldn't be bringing in your anger and provoking one another to anger into frustration You're old enough You ought to be able to walk it in there what it is to love and care in there And if you don't do it, you've sinned willfully after you have a knowledge of the truth. I'll discipline you in the Lord Love is he chastened? You know that we would just realize these things happen and that when we realize ourself Lord help me Help me to provoke one another Others there to love and to good works I've grown up enough. I know who I am and what I ought to be now Jesus Would you just forgive me would you go on in and clean it again? And again and again and again, I'll tell you the very last day. I'll do you'll be on this planet You'll need a housekeeping The very last day every room that you have gone into of your life every every aspect of it your marriage your children Whatever it is. None of it was yet be perfect. Oh, hopefully when you go into it It's far less, you know messed up than it started in room by room relationship by relationship Maturity by maturity process by process from adolescence through, you know Puberty into adulthood in the majority in years you learn there something where God take my life and cleanse it and Lord, I know how to be forgive me and Then if there's somebody else there Jesus said you went into that room and you just said this to him or her now I want you to go back in that room because it's willful now and say I'm sorry and Try to provoke them to love and good works. That's when we're growing And when we just how many of us that this happens again, we were in some of us maybe today you're in prison You're angry You're upset Frustrated that's a prison That's quiet time or what do you call it? You're gonna have a what do you what's the word these days? Something I can't what that's the word timeout. That's what the 90s or something timeout. I Just simply say hang out, you know or something. I'm not the wall, you know or something but anyway But there we have all of these things but we have God gives us timeout all the time Said you'll sit. I Always know and I'm having a timeout. I always know when I'm in prison I can be driving down the street and I've had the word with my wife and all the way to the office I'm sitting there just talking to her. She's not in the car Nobody's in the car. Just me. I Don't you I know I am you know Didn't let me do that is miserable timeout. That is prison. That is costly And I can hardly wait till she calls me up and asked me to forgive her, you know, and so we go But oh that we would just you know be able to look and say Lord provoke me You've opened it up. I'm a Christian. I'm forgiven. I'm forgiven done deal once and for all Non-issue now because I'm forgiven because I'm your child you are committed to raising me up Opening the veil bringing me in Disciplining me now. Let me draw near with a full heart of assurance Let me come in and provoke. Let me provoke one another to love and good words And Lord to the degree, I don't do it and I willfully sin. There's no sacrifice for that. I'll answer for it I'll go have to put it right and pay the price ask the forgiveness and do what it is Myself Not a hard lesson. It's part of growing up We've already learned it to one degree or another in our human life. Have we learned it spiritually in the temple of God that we are Amen Let's pray Lord Jesus we Come before you and how we thank you for your love. I pray Lord. There wouldn't be a Christian here a child of God It doesn't know it's once and it's once and for all That you have set us apart positionally we're perfect The Lord many of our troubles today may not be because of the fact that we're not a Christian there because we are And we know better and Lord you may be chastising this way. You may be dealing with us saying You willfully Doing what you shouldn't You're not drawing near to me. You're not seeking my presence You're not provoking one another to love and good works Lord may we be ones that we find ourself I'm sorry Will you please? Clean it up. And then what I need to do to clean it up that you don't have a sacrifice for Maybe there's somebody I need to go to and say something ask them. Maybe there's something I need to do to put something, right? Lord to help me to do it Lord may that be our attitude. May that be a heart and then Lord when we find ourself failing and and we find ourself being chastised and having time out Lord, may we take that and nod our head and say I see Lord strengthen us forgive us mature us every one of us Jesus we ask in your wonderful name Amen ======================================================================== Audio: https://sermonindex1.b-cdn.net/8/SID8816.mp3 Source: https://sermonindex.net/speakers/don-mcclure/hebrews-10/ ========================================================================
