======================================================================== LOGOS, CALLAO, PERU (SEPT. 17-OCT.13, 1987) by George Verwer ======================================================================== Summary: The Lagos team faced challenges and triumphs in Callao and Lima, but saw fruitful ministry and decisions for Christ through their evangelistic efforts and open air meetings. Duration: 1:00:06 Topics: "Mission Work", "Conference Ministry" Scripture References: Matthew 28:19, Acts 1:8 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DESCRIPTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In the video, Nixon, a conference center leader in Callao, Venezuela, expresses gratitude for the beautiful conference center and the 14 conferences held there. He highlights the importance of the mission conference, where people from different parts of the country gather to learn and be inspired. Nixon also mentions the success of various games and competitions held during the conference, including tug of war and eating bananas. He concludes by thanking God for the impact the conference had on the lives of those who attended. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONTENT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For those of you listening by tape, this is coming to you from the Lagos. I'm David Greenlee, and I'm going to ask others who share to give your name and tell the country that you're from as we go along, so that people that are listening will know who it is that is reporting and saying something about what has happened in the port of Cayao, the port city for Lima, capital of Peru. We've just left a little bit ago, and it's encouraging to see virtually all the people who joined us in this port still here, still up, still with their food in their stomachs, and we hope it stays that way for the rest of the voyage for all of you. This has been, for me, one of the best ports in a long time. We've had some exciting places in some ways, like Nicaragua was exciting, but I found our time here in Lima was a very profitable time, and in the Lord's time, because of several major things that were happening that coincided with our visit, things we didn't really know about, even when we set the schedule. One person who wasn't planning to be in Cayao or in Lima involved in the lineup, but is the only one sailing with us from the lineup team is Freddy Ordonez. Poor Freddy couldn't get his visa extended long enough to stay until the ship came into Guayaquil - or until - were you in Guayaquil at all with the ship, Freddy? No, he left before the ship even got to Guayaquil, and then came down here ready to go to Arica, but with 600 churches and a big permission situation developing, Peter Paulson and Helen and Lisette Rojas - Lisette's left O.M. now, Peter and Helen are on their way to Argentina - needed some help, and so we decided for Freddy to stay here, and it was a very good decision, because he was a major asset to the team. He's going to start by giving us a little perspective of what it was like before the ship came in and how the Lord worked in getting those permissions together at the - some of them at the very last minute, Freddy. Yes, I want to praise the Lord for all the things that he has done in this sport and our last sport. Since I arrived in Lima, we had many problems to get the permissions, and we started with getting permission to sell books. And I remember when we came to the office, to the customs office, and they told us that we need a special resolution because in Peru they have a law that prohibits the sale of anything on the ship. But the Lord worked in an amazing way, and we started to make contact with the people, and the Lord provided for us a special contact here in Lima that was the senator, a Christian guy. His name is Jose Ferreira, and he helped us a lot. He was a very helpful guy in this last sport, and he started to make contact with the authorities for himself, and we got the permission to the visit of the Logos to the Minister of Education. And after that, we had the open doors to every office that we went. And also, three weeks after I came to Lima, a new law about the nationalization of the bank was given to the country, and also we thought, okay, how we will change the money that we will get from the book sales on the ship. But the Lord's ways are higher than our ways, and the Lord also, to other people, other missionaries on other missions, he got for us the opportunity to exchange the money. The ship Logos arrived safely, and we are here because the protection of the Lord was with us, and the changeover left, and the new guys, new people came to the Logos, and thank you to the Lord for that. The official reception was well attended. The Minister of Education and other authorities came to the reception, and also the ambassadors, and it was very good, very well, the reception, and many of them here for the first time, the Gospel of God. And we got a good publicity also because these higher authorities came to the reception. Many of the TV stations came to the Logos, and they filmed many things around, and took many interviews, and also it was good for them, for us to get these interviews, these programs, these films through the TV stations. Although we had many problems also with the authorities of the port and the port captain. I know that you remember that in our first days, we had a problem with the port captain because the hours of the book exhibition, only he wanted that people come to the book exhibition until 5 o'clock in the afternoon of the evening, and we had problems with that. After two days, the port captain came to the Logos, and we talked with him and with his people, and after that, we got the permission from him for the people to come to Logos and visit the ship and visit also the book exhibition. Also, I want to give thanks to the Lord for all the people that have visited the ship through our 25 days here in Callao and Lima, and for all the school meetings that we had, and also I want to give thanks to all of you that helped us in this program, to help us in taking meetings. I want to give thanks to each one of you for your patience, and also with the pastors and churches. I know that you had many problems with that, with the churches. Sometimes they didn't want to bring you back to the ship, and also sometimes they took 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and you came at 11 o'clock in the evening or the night. They never provide for you food or whatever. I want to give thanks to each one of you for your patience with them. Also, I know and we trust that this program and the sections and individual weakness, meetings and fellowships that you had with the peoples in Lima and Callao, all helped to build his kingdom or the kingdom of the Lord in this country. And God had a special purpose in bringing the ship to Lima and bringing each one of you to serve in this ship and also in this country. Thank you very much. We couldn't miss having the next person be our birthday boy for the day. Ricardo, how old are you now, Ricardo? Ricardo Morales from Columbia. He turns 20 today, and for the past couple months he's been doing a tremendous job running the book exhibition. And he put an awful lot of effort. We had a shipment of about, I'm telling you a story, but about $30,000 worth of books for one of the bookshops here. And if any one person is responsible for getting those off to El Inca, I think Ricardo is. He's done a tremendous job. He's going to come tell us a little bit about what happened up on the book exhibition, how much was sold and how much was stolen. Well, I really didn't want to talk about those books. Thank you. Okay, okay. During 25 days that we were open to the public, we have $102,453 book sales. So it was something very good. We had an average of $4,100 book sales every day. So it's something to give thanks to the Lord. It was a goal. And I think like three, four days before we closed the book exhibition, we started to pray, asking to the Lord that we wanted $4,000. It was a goal. And we wanted to do a record to go over $4,000. And I think the Lord answered, because even yesterday, that it was the last day, Monday, we had over $4,500 that made up our average. And we came to $4,100 average per day. So it's something good. One of the things that surprised me when I came to the port was to see a lot of help from the people of ENAPU. ENAPU is the organization that is taking care of the port. They take care of the ships that are coming here. And they gave us a tremendous help controlling crowd and with the security. We had some days 10, 12 guards inside the ship taking care of the books and helping us to control the crowd in the gangway inside the book exhibition around the cash registers. And it's something really good. But even though we had, I mean, the people were coming to steal. And I remember one day, just two guys inside the trousers, they had $130 worth in books. So the policemen who were helping us as well, they caught them. And I had to go to the police station to see. And yesterday, the guards came again to take me there to say that they were stealing. And they had to go to prison because of that. And several other people we found stealing Bibles. And it was really terrible the way how they were stealing. But we really were working on that, searching people. And we asked some policewomen to help us, searching women. And I think we did the best trying to avoid stealing during this port. But even though, I have to acknowledge that the people stole here a lot. And also in this port, we had the chainsaw, as all of you know. And one team had just six people. And the other one, I think, five or six as well. So I really want to thank you, all those who are from the Book Exhibition Department, for their hard job. Especially, for example, one of those days, we had $8,000 book sales. And the Book Exhibition had like 6,000 visitors. And just them were running the Book Exhibition in a very tremendous way. And many of them missed their day off on Sunday. We were open after 11 o'clock to be able to manage the amount of people that were coming. So it was something really good to see these people working. And it's something to praise the Lord and to give thanks to the Lord for the commission they had and their willing spirit to help the Book Exhibition. And this port also, as David Greenlee said, we had a special event. It was Peru 87. And on Sunday, the 10th, we had around 1,000 people. I think 1,000? 500? Okay, 600 people coming from Peru 87. And we had the opportunity to give them a 10% discount in all the Christian books that they bought during this day. So I was happy about that, to see these people buying books. And just these people bought $1,500 in books, which is good. Praise the Lord that we could see that amount of books going out, Christian books, just Christian books. And another thing is that there is a library in Peru, and they bought us from the foredeck like $2,500 just in Christian books. And we delivered for them $30,000 in Christian books came from Miami through us, and we were able to deliver to them. And it was also something very good and something to give thanks to the Lord because He was good to us and He allowed us to take those books out from the ship and to be able to give to them. So I think that's it. Thank you. And of that money that came in, we were able to send back over $75,000 to pay bills. So that means that something we haven't been able to do so often. We were able to send back more money than actually the cost of the books and the freight and everything for what we sold in this port. And that's really something considering what all had happened as well concerning the foreign exchange. We were able to do it quite legally, but in a - no, I'm not joking. It was all legal, but it was in a situation where the traditional means of legality going through the banks had recently been changed just before we got there. Well, Ricardo mentioned Pru 87. Pru 87 is a follow-up conference to Amsterdam 86 sponsored by the Billy Graham Association. 2,400 people registered there. And we had some time on two mornings to share from the platform about our work, but not just to talk about Lagos but to talk about the burdens the Lord's put on our hearts. Elba and Raimundo each sang on two different nights for all of them, and we had the large group coming down here. One thing about those books that went out and the people that came, I had two meetings in the morning with about 150 people that I took here, and I asked them. Most of them came from either the jungle or from the mountains. I said, how many of you, for the first time, you've been on board of a ship? And it was about 95 percent of the people in my two meetings raised their hand. I said, how many first time you've seen the ocean? And when they came down here to the port that morning, for 75 percent of the people in my meetings, that was the first time they'd ever seen the ocean in their lives. And I don't know, maybe when they flew into Cayo arriving here at the airport, maybe they saw it then. But anyway, their time here was the first time they'd ever seen the ocean. But we also were able to send out teams, about 50 people went out on the track day in the afternoon, and there were several decisions, I think, in the open air. I'd like to ask, Dale, you were involved in that, weren't you? Because we don't come just to make money off the books. The books are a ministry, but that's part of what keeps us here for the sake of reaching people. Dale, why don't you come tell us a little bit about your open air meeting with the Pru 87 people, and then tell us, just introduce this tape you're going to play for us. And then, Gary, are you here? And then why don't you come up and tell us some more about evangelism after that? OK, when we went up there to Pru 87, it was hard. When we came into the big meeting area, boy, they had thousands of people there. We thought, how are we going to get all these people out in the street? And then we thought we were going to be in charge of it all. And when we got up there, it ended up that they had things organized more than we thought, which they sent us to different parks around the city center, and we were able to go and have different open air meetings. I think there were so many people. I think there was, in our park that we were around, there was one, two, three open air meetings going on just in a little area, just one block. And we were able to see, well, there was two people that, in just my, the one we were at, or the open air we were at, that made decisions, and that I knew of, but there was other people from the campaign that were taking their names to, or back into the Pru 87. And there's another thing I want to talk to you about, too, is during our time in the port when Wormult was here, we were visiting some of the ships, as usual he would do, and we were coming back one time from a ship and got stopped by a guy looking for a tourist ship. And we ended up meeting him, his name is Mario, and he just took our names down. We said, well, the cruise ship is down there, but we're from the Lagos, but you can, you know, then he says, oh, yeah, you are. You know, we told him about this Christian ship, and so he took our names down. And later on, he ended up coming back to the ship a few times just to talk with us, and he ended up accepting the Lord. It was during one prayer evening, and it was just, he accepted the Lord, and two hours after he accepted the Lord at home, he came here and told us about it. And it was the result of just many different people talking to him. And just before we left just now, he was in Vessel's cabin giving us a little testimony, putting his testimony on tape, and I just want to play it for you now. Yeah. I did everything here. And my situation was very depressed, you know, a lot. It makes me upset. And so I don't care, I agree, I'm completely without teaching, I'm very sick right now. Well, you know, but I let this person, you know, the locals, just start talking to them for my life. Because I came to the port to see another ship, and they said, hey, there's a local too, maybe you can come another day. I said, okay, maybe. I went to the other boat, and the police don't allow me to get in. And so I went to the locals, and it's impossible to get in the locals too. But then, I came back three days later, because I quit my job. That's why I don't like my job too much. Too much fight. And then, I start talking with a friend, his name is Juanjo, he's a politician. He started talking about Jesus with me. Then, I know another friend that was, Teo, Teo Contos, he's very nice with me too. Then I talked to a friend called Gary, Gary Contos, he's nice too with me. Then, I know another friend like Pedro. Well, all here are not nice guys. Well, the thing is this, they start working on me with their word of God, and I believe in that stuff. You know, my birthday is close, but I don't accept the Lord. I want to sleep, you know, that's what I do, I accept the Lord. But after a couple of days, I accept the Lord, and I have pride with my mother. Because I can't live no more with trust, no more with small problems, so much fighting with my mother, with everybody. I like to cry, but I don't cry. But then I accept the Lord, and it's a real change. I feel peace, you know, I feel very sad, very upset, when my marriage gets broken. Because I feel, I feel, oh, where is my woman, I love her. I still love her, but right now I love that more. I love that more than anything else on earth. So, that's why, that's why. I give all my problems to Him, so I realize right now that if He wants to fix my marriage, He will do it. If He wants, He will do it. And now I have my average idea of life, I'm feeling better. My life is clean, my mind is clean, and I feel full of love, because it's the love of God. I begin to feel love for other people, people that I hate, you know, like my, like my father-in-law or my brother-in-law. I hate them, but right now I pray for them, because I realize there is no other way to save more people. I'm really changed, I'm really, I feel right now really, really, really good. Because I changed, I start talking to the people about Jesus, what the, what He has done to me. It really changed me right now. I feel right now better. Why, why am I better? Well, I think it's all. Thank you very much brother. Thank you. Wow. Gary, you want to come up and tell us more about evangelism? Gary Wimberly. Well, it's been somewhat of a transitional period for us. We had three of our members to leave this port at changeover. But I think that we've seen much fruit here. God has really worked. We've had some 200 decisions, which we can praise the Lord for. Just Mario, man, that, I had a chance to spend time with him every day, and to see this guy going out day to day, and beginning to witness the people himself, and translating for me. And it just really blessed my heart. But there are many Marios out in this city. A city this size, a big city like Lima, has many people with drug problems. And we had a chance, especially in a church called the Presbyteria Iglesia in Palomino, to come across many people with drug problems. And several other of them made decisions for Jesus Christ during this port. And I talked to that preacher last night, and he said that four or five people have come to join his church since we've been working in that area. So it's been fruit there. It's been fruitful. Although we've been small in number. And many times I think Larry and Cobus and Joseph, before they went home, they had many things to think about. But they really did a good job staying with the evangelism every day. And this guy was telling me from this church, this Presbyterian church last night, that we've really been an encouragement to his church. He said he saw our unity above all things. He saw how we worked together as a unit, as a team. And we were forceful. We went out every day and we did open airs. And he said we encouraged his church. That people were starting, especially a couple of young teenagers in there, were starting to go door-to-door daily because they saw us doing it. And that's what we must continue to do. Another church we worked with was the Iglesia del Señor in Miraflores. Again, we did some evangelical teaching with them that was very good. The pastor was very encouraged. And him and a few of his members of his church went out after we taught them some rope tricks and some sketchboards. And they did some open airs with us. And they participated in the open airs. We had one guy doing a rope trick. And he was really good. He did a good job. And this guy also was very encouraged with the work that we did with them. And we went twice, and we did two open airs, and there was some 30 decisions in those two open airs. So we can praise the Lord for that, the work that he did there. And the other church we worked with was the Iglesia Alantia Christiania Missionaria in San Juan del Flores. Okay, my Spanish is bad. But again, this guy was very pleased. He talked to Larry after we did some teaching. And Larry had done some sketchboards with him. And man, he was talking about Larry coming back and working with him in his church. And he was really encouraged. And I think it's a very fast- growing church. I think it was something like 180 members in this church that only started in January. And they're working in a nucleus of a population where the church is of some 1 million people. So the encouragement we did through evangelizing and techniques, they were teaching them techniques, I think is going to pay off. Because that church seemed very interested. One night I spoke myself. I had the chance to do that. And they seemed very interested in learning evangelical techniques. And we sold many books there. So I really think it was a fruitful port. And I thank God for the privilege to have come here and worked. I just got word from Tino that as we were sailing out, I don't know if any of you saw it, there was a Korean ship that wasn't just working with a flashlight. They were signaling with us on purpose. And I assume they did it in English because I don't think Tino reads Korean, at least Korean Morse code. But anyway, they were signaling out, God bless you. God bless you. God bless you. As we sailed out. Do you know what ship that was, Young- Kyu? Naturally. How much kimchi did they give you this time? Come tell us about it. Come on. Three minutes. Three minutes. This is Young-Kyu from Korea. He's happy because three Koreans have joined us in this port. I won't tell you that they're all women. I feel praise God for this port. God answered my prayer in many ways. Well, when the nukes arrived here, it happened to be the Korean Thanksgiving Day. It's one of the largest holidays in Korea. At that time, I had contacted the Koreans from the Korean ship. There were a couple of Korean brothers there. Also, Captain became Korean for one month. But during the last month, they became very discouraged. They didn't have any more five-study group and devotion. So through our contact, they were encouraged by our ministry. They visited us many times. So even some can be encouragement to them. Especially when we had a welcoming party for Korean girls or some of my new brothers I met last year. They provided Korean food, kimchi, rice, all food. Also, unbuckled noodles. Really, thank God for that. Also, because some of our brothers and sisters in Korea, they had experience in Korea. We have evangelism. Same ministry we are doing with the Korean ship. So God provides everything. So God prepared everything for us. So I sense that God is using us even though we don't recognize. But He really does. Also, I'd like to encourage you. I think many of us don't speak good Spanish. But when you have a burden for some souls, God uses us. I led some brothers and sisters to the... You know, Chino helped me a lot. So many brothers and sisters came to Chino. But I gave them some tracts and follow meeting cards. I just prayed for them. Really, thank God for that. If we are willing to, but I think God is going to use us even though you don't speak Spanish. So I'd like to encourage new people. Try to speak Spanish. Try to give a tract to them also invite for the follow meeting. Because God is doing through us. Thank you. The day we arrived, or the day after we arrived, a meeting called the Primer Encuentro Misionero del Perú, which was the first missionary encounter of Perú began. It was actually the first interdenominational gathering, other than perhaps Duloc Conference, that I know about anyway, concerning missions and sending out Peruvian missionaries. It was Friday night and Saturday. And it was... In part, it was planned and they decided to go ahead with it when they knew that we would be coming in. I did a meeting back in July with some of the people. And so some of us were able to take part in that meeting. Em spoke and I spoke and Claudio and Jose and various others sang and shared testimonies about what the Lord is doing. Those people at that meeting are going to be involved in Comibam, the Ibero-American Mission Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the end of November. And they were very happy that we were able to come and to give them some encouragement towards missions. There are about 100 there, 80 to 100 there, that were seriously considering what they could do in missions. And others of them came back. And so they commented we had a youth leaders conference on board. And one of the things that some young people came to me, they asked me on this last Saturday to go be with them for a prayer night that went until 6.30 in the morning, which I graciously declined being able to go to at this occasion. But they said that the teaching we gave them about prayer and how to pray for the world, they said they'd heard about missions, but they'd never heard anything as practical as what we gave them in that youth leaders day here on board. So we had a lot of conferences, a wide variety of meetings and programs. Nixon was in charge of coordinating things with the beautiful Port Training Center, which gave us free of charge their conference center for our youth. I'd like Nixon to come tell us something about that. And then you're not going to say something, Filippa? And then Filippa is going to come and say something about some of the meetings on board. And then we had a team that went up and had a very profitable time of ministry over the weekend in Cusco. And Julie Otto is going to tell us a bit about that. Then after that, let me see, Raimundo, you want to say something about the volunteers briefly? And then we'll have a chance for whoever wants to give us some other stories. We'll go until about 8.30, so each of you keep it short to give some time to the others. Good evening. My name is Nixon. I'm from Venezuela. And in this forum I have the privilege to be in charge of the conference center here in Callao. I want to praise the Lord for that conference center. It's a very beautiful conference center that's 250 seats. But we have there in the conference center 14 conferences. And some of them we have to repeat because we don't have any tickets for them. So they make some conferences. The same conferences we have to repeat. So we have so many important things in that conference. But one of the more important things I find in that conference is the mission conference. Because all the people, you know, we have three conferences, the following conferences. And the same people come in the first conference, they come in the last conference. So that's really amazing because they are very interested for the mission. They want to hear some testimony about these people. They want to go overseas to share the gospel to other people. And we can pray for the couple here. I don't remember their last name. But one of the girls called Carmencita, Carmen is her name. And her boyfriend, they are really interested in going out to Peru. So they don't have a blue passport, they have an American passport, but they have money. That's a very interesting thing. So they are working here in Peru, around Peru and other churches with the music ministry. And they want to go out to share the gospel to the people around the world. So we can pray for them. Also we can pray for the people who are helping in the conference center. One of the names is Senor Pino, Robin and Rafael. They are helping a lot because normally they are working in the evening. But they are working for us and for the Lord in every conference. So that's really amazing. And the most important thing is that all the conference, they sit in the back and they hear everything. And one of the guys, Robin, he asked me how I can accept the Lord. He said, if you have a willing heart, you can accept right now. I said, no, I don't think I have prepared my heart right now. So he asked me, if you can pray for me, I would really appreciate it. Pray for me and for my family. I have two children and my wife. So I prayed a lot for that. And so many things we received in that conference. We have a good book tour and this conference. 20% discount? I didn't do that. Because I forget. Ah, the price. Okay, it's included in the price. Anyway. Okay, thanks. Okay, we give the discount to the people. Sorry. We trust you, Nixon. Okay, I just want to encourage you just with what we've actually done in Peru as a whole. We've been here for 25 days of ministry. And then before that, the changeover, people don't know that, but we were in another port in Peru. And we've reached, just in meetings and conferences, nearly 27,000 people. That's not people visiting the book exhibition. That's people who have actually been ministered to in a meeting or a conference on shore or on the ship. So that's a lot of people just in a short while. So I want to really thank all of you who've been involved in meetings again and again. We've had here 206 meetings. Half of those are on shore. Half of those are probably the church teams that you were told about why you didn't get food. And the other half were mainly on the ship, apart from the ones in the conference center. I think, for me, the main thrust of our vision in this port has definitely been teaching. Because we've had many conferences, like elders and deacons conference. We've had the youth leaders conference for the first time in a long while that we've been told about. Many, many conferences on marriage and pre-marriage. So M is really doing a good work there. And the missions conferences and also how to study the Bible conferences. Because it was changeover, we didn't have an international night too, but we packed in a few extra conferences. So this port has definitely been a port where we've reached the people, we've reached the Christians with good teaching. And you really would be surprised how appreciative they are. I know for many of us, we don't really realize the benefits of the conferences that we have. Because maybe you just share a testimony or maybe you just sing a song or something. Or you're not in for the whole thing. But if you ever hear the comments of the people afterwards, it's really incredible. One girl came up to me after this youth conference that we had. Especially for top youth leaders in the churches. No more than two people per church. And she just said, you know, we really need more of this stuff. We just don't get the teaching. And it's good that we can share what we know with these people. So I'd like to encourage us all to pray for the conferences. I know you all have a lot to pray for. But can you add the conferences and the meetings to your prayer list? Because when you can reach 27,000 people in one country just with a ship, that's a lot of blessing for them. And the highlights for me were, in this port we went back to doing evangelistic films in the dining room on Sunday evenings. And afterwards, Tino shared a sketch board. We had many people coming up afterwards and accepting the Lord. And on the last night we had 20 people accepting the Lord. Just through using the lounge, using the dining room. Normally we may use it ourselves and sit around and drink coffee or whatever. It can be used to bring people to the Lord. So thanks for that. And I'd again just like to thank everybody who, especially over the change over time. We probably put you in meetings and you were working. All sorts of different things like this because of the confusion with timetables. But thanks everybody for all the hard work that you've given us in the program room. And making this a really successful port. Thanks. I'm Julie from the States. I'm not seasick. I just took a pill. Definitely one of the highlights for me in this port was the ability to go to Cusco for a three day team. There was a special team of five people. Who went up for three days. And we worked with two churches. And in the time that we were there, we had six meetings. And spoke to many people. We had six people that I know of. No, seven, eight people that I know of that accepted the Lord. In the church meetings themselves. And the churches were so open and so willing to receive everything that we had to give them. And we're saying, boy we would love to have had a team of 13 people for a week. Just to reach out in the area up here. And of course one of the other highlights was being able to go to Machu Picchu. Which is the center of the Inca civilization. And that was also a real blessing. But just to see how God is working. Both of the churches that we worked with. Half of the people that belong there to the church are Quechua Indians. Who are the descendants of the Inca Indians. And to see these people open to the Lord and following Him. And really wanting to serve and learn practical things. We were able to share very practical things about Christian growth. And it was really a highlight for me in this port. To be able to go up and minister to them. We were talking Sunday night after our 7th meeting. And said, you know, even if we don't go to Machu Picchu. This trip will have been worth it. Just because of the ministry that we had. But God bless Machu Picchu too. It was nice. My name is Raimundo. I come from Brazil. And I don't want to talk about the volunteers program. Just to share one very nice experience that we have in this port. With one of the volunteers. And this guy, his name is Jorge Henrique Pena. And I met him in the volunteers orientation meeting. And I got his application form. And in the end of the meeting we decided not to accept him. Because I realized that he had homosexuality problems. And I told him that. And after that he started crying. Crying and crying, crying. And he shared all his problems that he had in the past. And I decided to give him the opportunity. But in the end of our conversation. I told him that I'm sure that I'm going to have problems with you. But anyway I will give you the opportunity. And after that, after two weeks, he came. He showed up to the second group. And the second day of his time on board. We got a lot of problems on board. He started to speak a lot of bad things about the ship people. And just in two days I think that we had five or six people involved in this kind of problems on board. And after that I called him again. And I spent time with him. And I spent one and a half hour with him. And in the end of our conversation we started praying. And in the middle of the prayer he fell down on the floor. And started to have some strange reactions. And the doctor was sleeping in the staff lounge. And she came and I just asked her what kind of problem he has. I'm sure that's not a physical problem. And I told her I think that's a spiritual problem. And we kept praying. And he couldn't breathe very well. And doing very strange things. And we started to pray for deliverance. Because we realized that he had demon's oppression. And after that he had a lot of changes in his life on board. And he became one of the best volunteers that we had on board. And don't forget his name. His name is Jorge Enrique Pena. He's a very nice guy now. Just take a few minutes. Anybody else have something you want to share? Anything you want to say something about? What up? My name is Justino. I come from Ecuador. I'd like you to be praying for a fellow I met on the book exhibition. He was trying to steal two books. And instead of giving them to him, I shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ with him. And I felt at that moment that the Lord really spoke to him and changed his life. Then I invited him to come back here two days later for a conference for new believers. And he came back. But after just a few minutes he had to leave for something or other. So I asked him to come back so I could disciple him. But he didn't come back. So I'd like you to be praying for him. His name is Cesar Benitez. Because I think that God is working in his life. And I just like him too. Anything else you'd like to share? Walter De Leon from Argentina. In this port I had a tremendous experience. Something that was common to many of you I think. I began to understand a bit more of how the Lord is working in our lives. And especially in the area of friendship. A lot of good friends that left. And many of us feel the absence of them now. But even though they were hard times, I think we could all sense how the Lord has united us in this time together. The experience that I had with some of these fellows. The ones of you that just arrived. The ones that have been around a while. We do know them. I could see how the Lord was working in their lives during this year. In different experiences that we had together. Working together. In RMT, Evangelism. In some department. But the Lord, despite the sadness that we felt, transforms that sadness into joy. Since we were able to take advantage of that friendship. It doesn't even need to be said that we continue to pray for them. It doesn't need to be said. Let's see the guys that painted the blue line on the ship out there. Who are the ones? Let's see the guys that did it. Milton, Vicente. Dr. Elias back there. For those of you who have not yet seen a picture of the Lagos, well the Dulos looks exactly like us now. Except that we've got a pretty blue band across the gunwales of the ship. Across the rails that are coming around the stern and so on. We've got a pretty blue band. They've got woodwork I think instead. But we have, for those of you listening on the tape who haven't heard us, haven't seen a picture yet. We're nice and white on the outside. Not like a white sepulcher I hope. With dead men's bones inside. But white with a blue stripe similar to what the Dulos looks like. Looks very pretty, I think. And the guys did an excellent job on that stripe. They did have to paint it out one time though. Anyway, it is a very good job. None of them will take responsibility for that. Well, let's close with just a short time of prayer. I'd like to ask Chris to keep the leaders in prayer together. We can pray for Cesar Benitez and Jorge Enrique Pena. Who'd like to pray for these people? Cesar is the fellow student. Okay, Milton. I'm going to pray for them. We ought to pray for, let's pray for Mario. And for the many others that in general came to the Lord through the evangelism. What'd you say, Gary? 200 decisions recorded? 200 decisions. We'd like to pray for those people. Mario in particular. Dale's going to do that and do the people in evangelism. And then let's pray for the ongoing work of the church here. Let's pray for those key leaders. They're all together for Parady Sub and many of them here on board. Now going back all around this country. Let's pray for them as they've got quite a challenge. We've heard some amazing testimonies of the places up in the mountains. Where Sendero Luminoso, the terrorist group, has a lot of power. And to go out to those places to witness to the Lord could easily cost you your life up there. And many pastors have already lost their lives. And so who's going to reach those areas? We need to pray for them and also for the growing missions interest to reach out into even meatier countries. Who'd like to lead in prayer for some of those? You knew that pastor, didn't you? Didn't you meet that fellow that was translating the Bible? Why don't you lead us in prayer for him? I forget his name as well. Pray for him and some of those other pastors. And the work that they're doing now. You three pray in that order and then we'll be dismissed. Thank you for being here. Thank you for being part of the volunteer program. You've made it clear, Lord, that what you're really doing is for the people. We want to ask you to bless them, Lord. May God help you to carry out your plans, Lord. May God help you to help this country. May God help you to help this country. Let's pray. We'd like to thank you, Father, for all the lives that were touched through the love of us this week in Cairo and Lima. We thank you, Lord, for those who attended the conferences on board and shore. We'd like to thank you for Dane Focus, where we had this conference not too far from the ship. We thank you, Lord, for what you've given to us, and the ANAPO, the organization who runs the port, who gave us even their facilities for a break even today. Lord, like to thank you for all those pastors, pastors once, Christian leaders who attended the Peru 87, around 3,000 people. Like to thank you for those who came here on board, and we pray for each one of them. We thank you even for the ministry of Roy Gustafson. We thank you, Lord, for what you're doing in Peru, and we'd like to thank you for what the people were telling us how they were touched by the ministry of Gustafson. We would like to praise you, O God, and we pray for each one of them in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. Before we close, I would like to announce the winner for our game. Now, first of all, the cyclist who won the first place, which one? The blue. The cyclist, the plastic bag. The blue, the first. The first, the second is the green. And the third is the white. The fourth is red. Okay, the tug-of-war, the first is red. The second is green. The third is. The third and the fourth is the same. White and blue. Eating banana. The first is blue. The second is red. The second is red. ======================================================================== Audio: https://sermonindex1.b-cdn.net/16/SID16077.mp3 Source: https://sermonindex.net/speakers/george-verwer/logos-callao-peru-sept-17-oct13-1987/ ========================================================================
