We just need to be filled with your spirit during this time. We need grace and love and mercy and forgiveness. We need to know how to have patience during these difficulties and during these trials. So Lord, I just pray for grace on my lips and wisdom and discernment as we look to your word. We pray this in Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for joining us. As you know, we're just live streaming. We've got everyone at home, including my family. So just a hello to all the West Side Christian Fellowship members. We do miss seeing you. So hopefully this will be over soon and we can again come together and celebrate. The message I want to kind of give to you that's been on my heart this week, the title is How to Benefit from Trials. How to Benefit from Trials. And I just want to give you kind of a heads up where I'm at. I'm very hopeful in God, but I also am very aware of what lies ahead. So it's hard to try to find that balance. I want to be hopeful, which is hope filled, filled with hope, but I also don't want to be ignorant or naive and miss maybe what God might be speaking to us and just take this lightly. I believe it's a huge wake-up call and we are taking what is going on with COVID-19 very seriously. And it's interesting though, because one of the signs of a false prophet in the Bible, I don't know how many of you know this, but a sign of the false prophet, one of the signs of a false prophet in the Bible was to say, peace, peace, when there is no peace. To say safety and safety when there's no safety. In other words, they were telling people what they wanted to hear, not what they needed to hear. What they needed to hear actually at that time was they needed to hear a beautiful word I've talked about before, repentance, turn back to God. Instead, what they were doing is saying, peace, peace, it's fine. God doesn't care. God's winking at sin. Don't worry about it. I know this looks like a judgment. I know this looks like a calamity, but peace, peace, God loves us. We're all just, we're just, it's like a doting grandfather. He is to us. But the Bible says that's a sign of a false prophet is saying peace when you should be saying repent and saying just joy when you should be saying there should be sorrow over our sin. So, I'm going to talk to you briefly about just the opening verse in James, how to benefit from trials. How can you benefit from trials? Another way to word this is how can you profit from trials, meaning how can you come out of this better? How can you come out of this stronger instead of coming out of this overweight and defeated and anxious and addicted to something else and really, how can you come out of all this stronger? And the book of James has something wonderful to say, especially in the opening verses. And this is just going to be a three-point sermon. It's not going to be too long, but it opens with this remarkable statement, James, James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad. Now, we know at this time there was Gentile believers, the twelve tribes is usually a term that they would use, meaning talking to the nation of Israel as a whole. And he said they were scattered abroad. But it's interesting here, I want to just stop here on the first way to benefit from a trial. He says, I was a bondservant. So if you want to get through this thing, you have got to become a bondservant. What does that mean? Bound to God's will, doulos, the New Testament would call, in the Greek word for slave is a doulos, it's a bondservant, I'm bound to God. In a nutshell, selfishness must die. I know I can't get an amen, but maybe you can say it through the TV, amen. Selfishness must die. We must become bondservants again, which means, Lord, what is your will, what do you want me to do? This is about you and other people, not me. And once that load has been lifted, and you realize, hey, I'm doing this for others, I'm doing this for God, much of the fear, much of the anxiety, much of the fear, the trepidation, much of the anger, the discouragement, the discontent, much of that will disappear because it's not self-focused, now it's focused on others, and it's much easier to go with the flow. People ask me, you know, Shane, what do you, are you hopeful about revival, are you hopeful about God, you know, doing something through this, is this a judgment of God, and what's going on? Well, we do know that there have been pestilence, for many, going back as far as you can remember from the Roman Empire, and the new believers, and then into London, and Europe, and so it's not necessarily something new, but it is a time where people's ears are more attentive, and I will tell you this, if I could see families broken, and if I could see parents fasting, and kids weeping over their sin, I would be very encouraged, but I'm still seeing a lot of selfishness, a lot of hoarding, a lot of abuse, a lot of contentions, I mean, you go to the store, and you can cut it with a knife, you can cut the contention with a knife, you can, and I'm still waiting for that person, that picture on Facebook, to show me that whole closet full of toilet paper, I know there's, it's just, we're just, me, me, me and selfish, and what's gonna happen, and so that's the only way I believe that we can start to see a, maybe a stay of God's hand, if God obviously is allowing this, if this is a judgment, per se, to a nation, I mean, for example, and there's not, there's, I'm not minimizing even one death, this is, this is terrible, and I know I just saw recently a thousand, a thousand people a day, I think that number have died from COVID-19, I believe that's nationally, but we have to remember that we slaughter over 2,000 children per day in our nation, and there could be a time where God's trying to even this out, and I'm not saying that, of course, that that's what's happening, but we have to put this in perspective, that our nation needs to be in a state of repentance, not a state of selfishness and looking in, so if you want to get through this trial, you've got to humble yourself, and you've got to allow this to break you, the Bible talks about the refiner's fire, the furnace of affliction, God crushing and crushing, and you see that throughout mainly the New Testament, the Old Testament, the furnace of affliction, meaning affliction would bring the dross and the impurities to the surface so the gold could shine, and the refiner's fire would do the same thing, and the crushing of God, and A.W. Tozer said something many years ago, he said, God often hurts a man deeply before he can use him greatly, so we have to allow this trial to break us and become a bond servant, meaning, Lord, not my will, what is your will? It's not necessarily about my finances anymore, and my hoarding, and my comfort, and my convenience, don't get me wrong, I love comfort and convenience, but once you get to that place of brokenness and you say, God, just use me, use me in this state, I want to be a bond servant of you, much of that pressure will be relieved, why? Because when we're selfish, self-focused, you can never please self, it's a master that will never, never relent on crushing you, if it can. So number two, we read in verse two, my brethren, count it all joy, now this is gonna be a hard one, my brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces, what, anger? Knowing that the testing of your faith produces impatience, no, it's actually the opposite, he says count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that this testing of your faith is going to produce something. So here's what we, here's the second how to benefit from trials, know the answer to the test up front, know the answer to the test, do you, did you remember going to high school and you already knew the answer to the test? Maybe somebody gave it to you early, I know that happened to me quite a few times, but you have to know the answer to the test when trials are coming against us, and what does that mean? That means an attitude shift, there has to be a shift in your attitude, he says count it all joy, now that's hard for me because I wanna get disgruntled, I wanna get negative, so it's this constant battle from within, and I'll just share with some of you who aren't aware of this, our church, for some of those who wanted to, are taking a fast today, fast from food, a fast from negative media, and I tell you what, we're getting rid of the negative media, I feel 10 times better, I wish I would have started this a week ago. So you have to train your mind, he says count it all joy, that's really a reckoning term, an accounting term, to account, to bring it to balance, and say listen, I'm gonna be joy filled through this, and so what happens, I make an attitude change, and I consider it all joy, and as I'm making that attitude shift, my faith is going to produce something in me that is very beneficial, that being patience. Remember this, trials either produce bitterness, or they produce love, trials either produce anger, or they produce joy, they produce fear, or they produce contentment, they produce discouragement, or they produce encouragement, to be very encouraged, now you might say how is that possible, because he said, count it all joy, in other words, okay, I'm ready for this test, I know the answers to the test, and if you want a lot of practical application on this, I'm going to encourage you to watch the last two messages, where I gave a lot of practical application on little things that you can do in this area, but James is clear here, we have to count it, in other words, make sure you are joy filled, do you know that's a choice, I used to think many years ago when I first became a Christian, that God would give me supernaturally, okay Lord, take this desire away, thank you, I don't have to fight anything, Lord just give me joy, give me patience, give me all these fruit of the spirit, and you don't wake up one morning with these things, it's a process, Lord make me humble, means he's going to chisel away your pride, so if you are being humbled right now, embrace it, don't run from it, run to it, so you count it as joy, you say, Lord thank you, I'm being humbled, and I'll tell you right now, not only am I being humbled, I'm being rocked out of my comfort zone, convenience zone, I just went to the store today just to get one or two things, and they're both gone, and there's a frustration, and so you have to go through these things in order to get rid of these things, how do you develop anger if you're never challenged by something that's going to anger you, how do you deal with Lord make me patient, I want to be patient with my kids, okay well hold on, buckle up, because it's going to get difficult, you're challenged by those things, and what happens when God brings those things into our life, they're like a chisel in the hands of a master carpenter, and he's chiseling away those things through the trials, so let me get rid of that area, let me get rid of this, okay we got a lot of anger here, we got a lot of bitterness or pride here, and you begin to chip those things away, and that's what the trial does, so James says, go ahead and count it all joy, in other words, okay Lord, you're going to take me through this, you're going to shape me, you're going to mold me like the potter does with a lump of clay, he begins to mold and shape that clay, what about if it's already hard, so if you go into this and you're already hard, I'm disgruntled, I'm angry, I don't like this, this isn't working, and all you do is you stay hard, God can't work in that unless it becomes clay and moldable, so that's what that trial is supposed to do, count it all joy, so I'm going to go ahead and give you a tip from last week, because I know some of you didn't listen, but here it is, saturate your mind in the truth, that's how you develop joy, that's how you develop joy, saturate your mind in the truth, because when you saturate your mind in the truth, you're filled with God's truth, which is the byproduct is love and peace and joy, and I just, we played here before, I kept hitting rewind today, just on that portion where the lyrics say, when all hope is gone, when all hope is gone, and your word is all I've got, I've got to remember that you're the same God that takes that water from the rock, so in other words, when all hope is gone, we've been through that, the Bible writers went through that, New Testament, Old Testament, when it seems like everything is bleak and all hope is gone, that's when God says, no, I have the final say, negative Nelly doesn't have the final say, the naysayers don't have the say, thank God the mainstream media does not have the final say, I know you can't say amen, but just shout it through your television, because God has the final say, and you must saturate your mind in the truth to be filled with joy, you pump it in, pump in the joy, pump in the love, pump in the grace, and you're not going to find that watching Netflix, I went and googled some of the top 10 movies on Netflix, if you think you're going to watch Ozark, and Bloodfather, and what's the other one, Tiger King, and all this stuff, top movies out there, if you think you're going to sit and feed on that all day, and then get off that couch, and be filled with the joy of God, you will not, you will be filled with fear, and discouragement, and discontent, you've got to feed your mind with things that build you up, and strengthen you, when all hope is gone, and your word is all I've got, I still believe you're the God who can deliver, I still believe that you're the God above China, you're the God above our government, you're the God above COVID-19, you're the God above all other gods, no other gods can stand before you, because there are no other gods, every nation will bow before you, every knee will confess that Christ Jesus is Lord, and we've got to get back to that Bible believing, hard preaching, teaching that teaches repentance, and holiness, and yes the love of God, but it's the love of God that compels me to share the truth about God to you, to a lost and dying world, oh God help us, God help us, so again number one, we must become a bond servant, we must humble ourselves, and then number two, you have to know the answers for the test, and the test, count it all joy when you go through this test, the answer is an attitude shift, attitude shift, especially if you know, if you have to know God in order to make that attitude shift, and you have to embrace joy, I don't like it any more than you do, we've had to cut things, we have to cut budgets, we have to make choices, we have to make hard decisions, we can't do certain things, everything's been canceled, and the tendency is for a lot of fear, and animosity, and discouragement comes in, and then that's why you're lashing out at people on Facebook, you're seeing that a lot more, we're seeing people lashed out on Facebook, and getting upset at texts, and emails, because there's an uncertainty, there's a lack of joy, and when there's a lack of joy, everything upsets you, so you have to make up your mind to, okay Lord, I'm going to embrace this joy, I don't understand it, it doesn't make sense, this isn't what I chose, but I want to be your bond servant, I want to do what you called me to do, and then number three, this is so important, here's what he says, verse four, well let me read it in context, verse two, my brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that this testing is going to produce something good in you, which is patience, but then he says, but, but, that tells me there's still struggle going on, but let patience, in other words, you better let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect, and complete, lacking nothing, it doesn't mean that you're perfect as in what we think of perfect, never fail, never sin, this is, this word perfect is completion, there, there, there's a wholeness, there's a fullness, do you know, you can have, there, you, there's people with no savings, they don't know where next month's rent's coming from, and they are more joy filled than most millionaires, why is that? Because they're perfect, they're complete, they're lacking nothing, and they're trusting in God, so you have to let, let patience have its, let patience do its job, that's number three, well, what is the definition of patience? Well, I'm glad you asked, patience is active endurance, check out this term, patience is active endurance, it's not just a one-time thing, it's an active endurance, and what it means is this, staying under a heavy load, anybody feeling that? Oh, the load of this, right, so what does patience, let patience means, you're, you're still moving forward despite this heavy load, there's active endurance, you're staying under a heavy load, I could keep doing this and get a good leg workout, but you're, there's a, there's an active endurance, and what we want is, oh, free me of this, free me of this, I don't want this, nobody says, let patience, let that active, actually, that's a good imagery, because as you're doing squats, as you, as that endurance, and that weight, you're building up something, and you're carrying this load around, and you're building up strength, you're building up fortitude, that's why God told, I believe it was Jehoshaphat, you will not need to fight in this battle, just position yourself, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, isn't that wonderful? God never says, Shane, get up and fight, He actually says, put on the whole armor of God, and having done all, just stand there, and bear under the pressure, and the weight, and trust me with all of your heart, and with all of your soul, and I will see you through, listen, I've got a message, I've got a message for the negative Nellies, I talked to a lot of negative Nellies this week, and they're painting grim pictures, this is end time scenario, the world's coming to an end, Shane, book of revelation is coming true, brother, just get ready, it's all over, we're done, and I want to tell the negative Nellies, how do you know that God is not breaking down the foundation to rebuild, because the God I read out in the Bible talks about rebuilding the foundation, if the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do, but if God breaks down those foundations of wickedness and sin, how do you know that God is not breaking down the foundation of America to rebuild, see, I'm gonna go out fighting, I don't know about you, but I believe in a God that says, if you turn back to me, I will hear your prayers, I will see from heaven, he told Jeremiah though, at one point, don't even pray for the people anymore, because the judgment of God, hand of God has fallen, but until he tells me that, not only am I praying, and fasting, contending for our nation, I'm believing, not in negative Nellies, but in God of the Bible, God says, trust in me, and turn to me, even when it's difficult, that's why I love that song, let it rain, let it rain, God, open the floodgates again, open those floodgates again, so that's how you benefit through trials, you humble yourself as a bond servant, you take on, you let your mind be joy filled, filled with joy, filled with the things of God, and if you have time, read Philippians 4 tonight, Paul told the Philippians, this church in Philippi, he said, listen, let me just sum up my letter for you, finally brethren, whatever things are pure, and honest, and noble, and upright, and true, meditate on these things, now think about that, are you meditating on things that are honest, and noble, and true, or are you meditating on all the news out there, listen, the news is ran by the prince of the air, I believe, I believe that there is a plan, and not necessarily contrived by anyone, but they are using this to create fear, they are using this to break down the economy, they're using this, and they themselves are fearful, there is no joy there, so they're going to, the news sells, and they're going to keep you fearful, and scared, and you have to trust in almighty God, and tell the negative Nellies, that you are no longer listening to those doomsday prophecies, now again, I understand, I've read the book of the Bible, I mean the books in the Bible regarding end times prophecy, I understand that things are leading up to that, but I also know that God says he will awaken his people, he will bring revival, there's a restoration, there's a renewal going on, and here's why there is great hope, in the last three messages that you are hearing, we've had more, we've had about 20 times more people listen online than ever before, 20 times that, I think we're going to hit a hundred thousand people watching these, just in the last couple weeks, because God is using that to wake people up, so here's my closing point though, tribulation trials without them, the prodigal son and the wayward daughter would rarely come home, see there's an attitude shift that takes place, when things are going good, when things are going great, we don't really need God, but when God begins to take that job, and remove those finances, and take that food, and get us in a state of panic, now the prodigal son, after he sees he's eating with the pigs, the Bible says something interesting, and he came to himself, he made a decision, there is an attitude shift, so you, if you're listening, if you're the prodigal son, if you're the wayward daughter, I have got encouragement for you, this is God's wake-up call, he's knocking on that door, and it does beg the question, America, what will it take to wake you from your slumber, repent of your apathy, and come to the cross of Christ, bow your knee to Jesus Christ, and repent of your sin, what's it going to take? I don't remember exactly what C.S. Lewis said, but he said something like, God whispers in our comforts, but he yells, he screams in our pain, it's that wake-up call, also tribulation, and testing like this, wakes up those living in darkness to see the light, those living in darkness, so I want to give you ultimate encouragement, there is a God, the Bible says, many of you know the famous verse, who for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes, not continues to fight against God, but whoever believes, not continues to be arrogant and prideful, but whoever believes and bows their knee to Jesus Christ, repents of their sin, God says, I will free that man from the bondage of sin and death, and I will fill him mightily with the Holy Spirit, and the joy unspeakable comes into your life, because the burden has been lifted, think about this, what can man do to me? That's why Jesus said, don't fear man, don't fear COVID-19 that can kill the body, but fear God who can cast both body and soul in hell, see we need to get back to those difficult truths, you'll notice how the false prophet is not going to be elevated during these times, because people don't want to hear smooth sayings right now, they need to hear the truth of God's word, they need to hear about brokenness, and repentance, and humility, and revival, and judgment, and the blood of Christ, all those wonderful things that built the church, so that's my final call to you, I don't know where you're at, if you're a believer, then you just need to be encouraged, I'm going to talk to four sets of people, and I'll be done, the first person is the believer, maybe you've let fear come in, anxiety, depression, you're feeding on the wrong things, you're feeding on the wrong things, consider fasting, consider praying, consider getting back into God's word, turning off the tv, disconnecting your first season, if possible, you're feeding on the wrong things, and it's feeding fear, then fueling the anxiety, you've got to feed things that calm the storm, and what happens, see I can go through the same storm, I'm going through the same storm I went through last week, right, so are you, other than now, I think I might have to put mask on when I go out, but you're going through this, I'm going in the same storm, but a week ago, fearful, anxious, anxiety, what's going on, now I'm just resting, I'm just resting in what God is going to do, resting, I'm trusting in Him, not in what the media says, not in what China did, not with our government, I'm trusting in God, and God alone, and not feeding my mind continually with all this death rate, and this, and this is happening, and this, and this, and one world order, and the Illuminati, and this is happening, they're going to shut down the internet, and then you got to take the mark of the beast, and then you can't buy or sell anything until this happens, and then, and then conspiracy theories are coming about, and now, now Bill Gates is going to use a global vaccine, I don't know, but all I know is that God, who all those people answer to Him, and that's the God you have to trust in, and look to, so the second person I want to talk to is the carnal Christian, the Bible would refer to that person as probably, might, maybe not, not even say, but let's assume you are, let's assume you're the prodigal son, you're the wayward daughter, it's time to come home, it's time to come home, the one thing the Bible is crystal clear on is urgency, urgency, now when you hear his voice, now when the sermon convicts you, now when the still small voice of the Holy Spirit draws you, now, now, now, conviction alert, it's time to wake up, and then the third person, you're searching, you're seeking, you're not sure, there might be a God, they call it agnostic, I pray Lord that you would just show that person who you are, I want to tell you this, pray this prayer, God, God, I don't know who you are, but I need to know you, I don't understand what to believe, or what book, but I want to know you, God will hear your cry, He will hear that prayer, and then finally the first person, the fourth person, I don't know how you've stumbled on this, if you are the fourth person, but the fourth person is in open rebellion to God, they're enjoying their sin, they're mocking God, and let me tell you this, God will not be mocked, whatever a man sows, he will reap, and I love you enough to tell you the truth, this is not coming from fear, this is coming from love, it's the heart that is so broken for our nation, so broken for the world, and that's why I said, what will it take to wake you up, America, America, what will it take to wake you up? It's interesting, if you go back and you look at the history of our nation, the pilgrims and Puritans came over, some fleeing religious persecution, the pilgrims I believe were first around 1620, and then you had the Puritans wanting to purify the church, and they came from Holland fleeing religious persecution, and the Mayflower Compact even said to the glory of God, and to the advancement of the Christian faith, yes we didn't do everything perfectly, but many men and women wanted to honor God, they died on the soil, so that we would experience the freedoms that we now experience, God built the court system, God built the legislation and the executive bodies, God built the constitution, I think it was Benjamin Franklin, when they were having problems, this might be a good word, I don't know if this would get to Washington or Sacramento, but it needs to, they didn't, they were at odds over the constitution, they were, maybe it's a bill of rights, I'm not sure, but they were at odds, they didn't know what was, they couldn't make this work, and there's so much contention, so much discord, so much anger, amen, and Benjamin Franklin wasn't even a believer, I don't believe, he said, gentlemen, we need to get to prayer, we need to get to prayer right now, if a sparrow, if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground with God, without God noticing, is it probable that an empire can rise without God's aid, and they would, Lincoln would have days, proclamations of fasting and prayer, and you would see the heartbeat, you'd see revival breaking out with Wesley and Whitfield and the Methodist circuit riders, and you saw this heart for God, now we've become a proud and arrogant nation, and God says, I love you enough to bring something to you that you will not have answers for, and when men and women start to cry out to God, God will answer again, if I could see families and parents, families broken, and parents fasting, and kids weeping over their sin, I would be, I would be so excited, because revival is right around the corner, God's going to answer the prayers of his people, but if we stay arrogant, and relying on a stimulus check, and we'll let things get back to normal again, they may not, they may not, God's not going to withdraw the, withdraw the pressure, if the pressure hasn't yet accomplished its purposes, so I'm gonna have the worship team come back up, we're gonna sing just a song or two, I think one of the songs is that song I mentioned earlier, Let It Rain, and that, well the reason that song is so beautiful is because it's about opening up the floodgates, and listen, that's what America needs, that's what your home needs, we need to pray, God let it rain, let it rain in my home, God let it rain in my personal life, and rain in the Old Testament was always a symbol of God's blessing, God's abundance, bringing in the harvest, God's people were blessed, here comes the rain, here comes the harvest, and they would just get excited, and so now the imagery is let it rain, in other words, let revival fire fall, let the spirit of God fall upon his people, God we need you, would thou not revive us again, so that your people would rejoice in you, you are our only hope, when we get to saying you are our only hope, we should post that all over Facebook, God is our only hope, not a cure, not a vaccine, not the government, not stimulus, not quarantine, when we start to say God you are our only hope, and in you we trust, and you alone, that's when you're going to start to see God move, and say that's the cries of my children, I hear those cries, I know those cries, and I will answer, I will answer, I'm confident, we've got to fight folks, I'm not giving up, I'm not going down without a fight, how do you fight? This is how we fight our battles, through prayer and worship, this is how we fight our battles, right now, I don't know if it's embarrassing to you or not, I don't know, I don't know, but I would just encourage you, encourage you, get on your knees before God, get on your knees before God, and just say God let it rain, let it rain in my home, let it rain in my marriage, oh God my marriage needs you, my family needs you, God I need you, I'm lost without you, God let it rain, pour in the spirit on a mighty magnitude of your, of something I've never felt before, I need brokenness, I need humility, I need to get rid of anger God, I need to get rid of addiction, oh spirit of the living God would you let it rain, reach Washington, reach Sacramento, Lord let it fall on our leaders, we need a sense of revival, and restoration, and renewal, and brokenness, and people crying out to God for hope.
