17 Bible Verses on Abuse From a Spouse

17 verses

Marriage is a sacred institution established by God, and spouses are called to love and respect one another. However, the Bible acknowledges that abuse can occur within marriages, and it condemns such behavior, as seen in Colossians 3:19, where husbands are instructed not to be harsh with their wives. Ephesians 5:25 and 1 Peter 3:7 emphasize the importance of mutual respect and love, while Proverbs 22:10 warns against the destructive nature of abuse. Malachi 2:13-16 also addresses the issue, highlighting God's displeasure with those who mistreat their spouses, emphasizing the need for kindness, compassion, and gentle treatment in all relationships.

And this is another thing you do: You cover the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping and groaning, because He no longer regards your offerings or receives them gladly from your hands. Yet you ask, “Why?” It is because the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have broken faith, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. Has not the LORD made them one, having a portion of the Spirit? And why one? Because He seeks godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith with the wife of your youth. “For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “He who divorces his wife covers his garment with violence,” says the LORD of Hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith.

Some Pharisees came to test Him. “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” they inquired. “What did Moses command you?” He replied. They answered, “Moses permitted a man to write his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away.” But Jesus told them, “Moses wrote this commandment for you because of your hardness of heart. However, from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” When they were back inside the house, the disciples asked Jesus about this matter. So He told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”
