9 Bible Verses on Boastfulness

9 verses

Humility is a virtue highly valued in Scripture, while boasting and pride are cautioned against. In Proverbs, it is written that a person who is wise in their own eyes can be more troublesome than a fool. Jesus teaches in Matthew that those who seek to glorify themselves through public displays of piety will not be rewarded by God. The letters of James also warn against boastfulness, stating that God opposes the proud, and that those who claim to be religious but do not control their tongues deceive themselves.

Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
“Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not babble on like pagans, for they think that by their many words they will be heard.
But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his heart and his religion is worthless.
Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.
But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good, traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. Turn away from such as these!
A fool’s anger is known at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.
Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
