7 Bible Verses on Grapes

7 verses

In biblical times, grapes were a staple crop, and their cultivation is often used to illustrate spiritual truths. Jesus taught that He is the true vine, and His followers are the branches, in John 15:1-5, emphasizing the importance of abiding in Him. The Bible also warns against the dangers of excessive wine consumption, as seen in Ezekiel 18:2 and 1 Timothy 5:23, while Numbers 6:3 notes the Nazirite vow, which included abstaining from grapes and wine. Furthermore, Ephesians 5:18 encourages believers to be filled with the Spirit, rather than intoxicating beverages, to live a life of wisdom and discernment.

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.
“What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge’?
he is to abstain from wine and strong drink. He must not drink vinegar made from wine or strong drink, and he must not drink any grape juice or eat fresh grapes or raisins.
Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead, because of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by them is not wise.
I will take away their harvest, declares the LORD. There will be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the tree, and even the leaf will wither. Whatever I have given them will be lost to them.”
