8 Bible Verses on Hating Your Brother

8 verses

In God's sight, hatred towards others is a serious offense, as it contradicts the fundamental command to love one another. According to 1 John 3:15 and 1 John 4:20, those who hate their brothers are not of God, and such feelings can even be considered murderous in intent. The book of Leviticus teaches that we should not harbor hatred towards our brothers, but rather rebuke them in love, as seen in Leviticus 19:17. Furthermore, Jesus' teachings in Luke 14:26 emphasize the need to let go of all earthly attachments, including familial ties, if they hinder our love for Him, and 1 John 2:9 warns that those who claim to be in the light while hating their brothers are actually still in darkness.

You must not harbor hatred against your brother in your heart. Directly rebuke your neighbor, so that you will not incur guilt on account of him.
If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother, he is still in the darkness.
“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be My disciple.
If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all transgressions.
