In the face of trials and hardships, believers are called to a surprising response: rejoicing. The book of James teaches that suffering can produce endurance and maturity, as believers learn to trust God's goodness in all circumstances. The apostle Paul writes in Romans that suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope, while 2 Corinthians reveals that he himself found joy in weakness, knowing that God's power is made perfect in it. Peter also encourages believers to rejoice when they share in Christ's sufferings, knowing that it brings them closer to their Lord.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Allow perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.
But rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed at the revelation of His glory.
