19 Bible Verses on Lying Lips

19 verses

Deceptive words and dishonest speech are strongly condemned in Scripture, as they can lead to harm and destruction. In Proverbs, it is written that the Lord detests lying lips, and that truthful speech is a hallmark of the righteous, as seen in Proverbs 12:22 and 12:19. The book of Proverbs also lists lying as one of the seven abominations that God hates, as described in Proverbs 6:16-19. Jesus teaches that Satan is the father of lies, as stated in John 8:44, and Revelation warns that all liars will be excluded from eternal life, as stated in Revelation 21:8.

There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that run swiftly to evil, a false witness who gives false testimony, and one who stirs up discord among brothers.
Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight.
Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.
John 8:44
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”

Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices, and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
Do not testify against your neighbor without cause, and do not deceive with your lips.
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
He who speaks the truth declares what is right, but a false witness speaks deceit.
An honest witness does not deceive, but a dishonest witness pours forth lies.
Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices,
If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.
My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”
Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge, he kept back some of the proceeds for himself, but brought a portion and laid it at the apostles’ feet. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land? Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!” On hearing these words, Ananias fell down and died. And great fear came over all who heard what had happened. Then the young men stepped forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him. About three hours later his wife also came in, unaware of what had happened. “Tell me,” said Peter, “is this the price you and your husband got for the land?” “Yes,” she answered, “that is the price.” “How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?” Peter replied. “Look, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.” At that instant she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. And great fear came over the whole church and all who heard about these events.
