In the biblical account of creation, God establishes the union of husband and wife as a fundamental aspect of human relationships, stating that a man leaves his family to cleave to his wife. The book of Genesis records that it is not good for man to be alone, and thus God creates a helper suitable for him. The apostle Paul writes in Ephesians that the relationship between a husband and wife is a reflection of the relationship between Christ and the church, with wives submitting to their husbands and husbands loving their wives as themselves. Additionally, Proverbs notes that finding a wife is a blessing from the Lord, and 1 Corinthians teaches that the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church.

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed kept undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

A wife of noble character, who can find? She is far more precious than rubies. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he lacks nothing of value. She brings him good and not harm all the days of her life.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her
Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs of the gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.
