Scripture teaches that earthly possessions are fleeting and can be a hindrance to a deep relationship with God. In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus warns against storing up treasures on earth, instead encouraging His followers to lay up treasures in heaven. The apostle Paul echoes this sentiment in 1 Timothy 6:7-10, cautioning against the love of money and emphasizing the importance of being content with what one has. Additionally, Jesus teaches in Luke 12:15 that one's life is not measured by the abundance of possessions, and in Matthew 6:24, He notes that no one can serve both God and wealth, highlighting the need for a balanced perspective on material wealth, as also encouraged in Hebrews 13:5.

Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation and become ensnared by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
