11 Bible Verses on Respecting Those in Leadership

11 verses

According to Scripture, believers are called to show respect and obedience to those in positions of authority. In Romans 13:1-14, Paul teaches that submission to governing authorities is a matter of conscience, while Hebrews 13:17 encourages obedience to church leaders. The book of Exodus also instructs to respect those in leadership, as seen in the command to not speak evil of the ruler of the people. Additionally, 1 Thessalonians 5:12-14 and Ephesians 6:1 emphasize the importance of respecting spiritual leaders and parents, demonstrating a biblical pattern of submitting to authority as a way of honoring God.

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Then do what is right, and you will have his approval. For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not carry the sword in vain. He is God’s servant, an agent of retribution to the wrongdoer. Therefore it is necessary to submit to authority, not only to avoid punishment, but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes. For the authorities are God’s servants, who devote themselves to their work. Pay everyone what you owe him: taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due. Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love. For he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and any other commandments, are summed up in this one decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. And do this, understanding the occasion. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near. So let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.
You must not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.
But we ask you, brothers, to acknowledge those who work diligently among you, who preside over you in the Lord and give you instruction. In love, hold them in highest regard because of their work. Live in peace with one another. And we urge you, brothers, to admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, and be patient with everyone.
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves.
Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.
In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the Prophets.
Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.
