15 Bible Verses on Self Mutilation

15 verses

The body is considered a temple of the Holy Spirit, and as such, it is to be honored and cared for. In Leviticus, the Israelites are instructed not to cut their bodies as a form of mourning, while in Deuteronomy, they are warned against imitating the pagan practices of self-mutilation. The apostle Paul reminds believers in 1 Corinthians that their bodies belong to God, and they should glorify Him in their physical lives. Additionally, 1 Peter encourages believers to cast their anxieties on God, rather than resorting to harmful behaviors, and 2 Timothy notes that God has given believers a spirit of self-control, enabling them to live wisely and make choices that honor Him.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may exalt you. Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
Watch out for those dogs, those workers of evil, those mutilators of the flesh!
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Then you may call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people answered, “What you say is good.” Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, shouting, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound, and no one answered as they leaped around the altar they had made. At noon Elijah began to taunt them, saying, “Shout louder, for he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened!” So they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives and lances, as was their custom, until the blood gushed over them. Midday passed, and they kept on raving until the time of the evening sacrifice. But there was no response; no one answered, no one paid attention.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
