9 Bible Verses on The Nature of Man

9 verses

According to Scripture, humanity is created in God's image, yet inherently flawed due to sin. As Romans 7:18 and Jeremiah 17:9 reveal, the human heart is prone to evil and deceit, with a natural inclination towards rebellion against God. The Bible teaches that this sinful nature is universal, with Romans 3:10-18 affirming that all have fallen short of God's standard. Colossians 3:5 and Galatians 5:19-21 further describe the expressions of this nature, including idolatry, immorality, and selfish desires, highlighting the need for spiritual transformation and redemption through faith in God.

I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The venom of vipers is on their lips.” “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery lie in their wake, and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Put to death, therefore, the components of your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.
Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time.
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
