1 Chronicles 29
BSA1 Then King David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] said to the whole assembly [congregation, group of people gathered together], “My son Solomon [a king of Israel, successor of his father David], the one whom God [Elohim, the one supreme God] has chosen [selected, picked out], is young [a youth, from infancy to adolescence] and inexperienced [tender, weak]. The task [work, employment, occupation] is great [of great importance, size, or age] because this palace [a grand building] is not for man [human beings, Adam], but for the LORD God [Yehovah, the national name for God in the Jewish faith]. word study 2 Now with all [every aspect, everything] my ability [strength, power] I have made provision [prepared, established, to set up] for the house [dwelling place, temple] of my God [Elohim, the supreme God]—gold [a valuable metal, something yellow or brilliant] for the gold [valuable, brilliant] articles, silver [money, payment, wealth] for the silver [valuable, shiny], bronze [copper, something made of it] for the bronze [copper, base or common], iron [a strong metal] for the iron [strong, harsh], and wood [a strong and firm object, a tree or wooden plank] for the wood [strong, firm], as well as onyx [a precious gemstone, possibly green or blue] for the settings [installing, ceremonial context], turquoise [a blue-green gemstone], stones of various colors [diverse, many-colored], all kinds of precious [valuable, highly valued] stones, and slabs of marble [a type of white marble, alabaster]—all [everything, abundantly] in abundance [greatness, plentiful]. word study 3 Moreover, because of my delight [affection, love] in the house [dwelling place, temple] of my God [Elohim, the supreme God], I now give [offer, provide] for it my personal treasures [valuable possessions, wealth] of gold [a precious metal] and silver [a valuable resource], over and above [in addition to, beyond] all that I have provided [prepared, established] for this holy [set-apart, sacred] temple [the house of God, a place of worship]: word study 4 three thousand [a multitude of] talents of gold [precious metal] (the gold of Ophir [a region known for its gold]) and seven thousand talents of refined [purified, cleansed] silver, to overlay [to cover, smearing a layer] the walls [barriers, partitions] of the buildings [houses, temples, places of worship], word study 5 for the gold [valuable metal] work and the silver [silver; money, a price] work, and for all [everything, every kind] the work [labor, occupation] to be done by the craftsmen [skilled artisans, experts]. Now who [which one, anyone] will volunteer [offer willingly, dedicate] to consecrate [set apart, devote] himself to the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] today [this day, at this time]?” word study 6 Then the leaders [chiefs, princes] of the households, the officers [rulers, princes] of the tribes [clans, families] of Israel, the commanders [captains] of thousands [large groups, companies] and of hundreds [smaller units, battalions], and the officials [overseers, controllers] in charge of the king’s [royal, sovereign] work [tasks, responsibilities] gave willingly [freely, voluntarily]. word study 7 Toward the service [work, or ministry] of God’s [the supreme Creator, Elohim] house they gave [units of weight or currency] 5,000 talents and [Persian coins, drams] 10,000 darics of gold [a valuable metal, symbolizing brilliance], 10,000 talents of silver [money, payment, or wealth], 18,000 talents of bronze [copper, a base metal], and 100,000 talents of iron [a strong metal, symbolizing strength]. word study 8 Whoever had precious stones [valuable gems, stones of great price] gave them to the treasury [storehouse, depository] of the house [dwelling place, temple] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], under the care [supervision, by the hand] of Jehiel [God lives] the Gershonite [a descendant of Gershon, from the tribe of Levi]. word study 9 And the people [the nation of Israel] rejoiced [experienced great joy, were glad] at the willing [freely given, voluntary] response of their leaders, for they had given to the LORD [Yehovah, the one true God] freely [without coercion, wholeheartedly] and wholeheartedly [with a perfect heart, completely]. And King David [the king of Israel, a man after God’s heart] also rejoiced [was delighted, experienced great joy] greatly [with a deep sense of joy, abundantly]. word study 10 Then David [the youngest son of Jesse and a king of Israel] blessed [praised, honored, or worshiped] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] in the sight of all [the entire, whole] the assembly [congregation, group of people gathered together] and said: “May You be blessed [praised, honored], O LORD [the God of Israel], God [Elohim, the supreme God] of our father [ancestor, patriarch] Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, referring to his descendants], from everlasting [forever, for all eternity] to everlasting [forever, for all eternity, till the end of time]. word study 11 Yours, O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], is the greatness [magnificence, mighty acts] and the power [strength, might] and the glory [beauty, honor] and the splendor [majesty, impressive appearance] and the majesty [dignity, grandeur], for everything [all things, the whole universe] in heaven [the visible universe, the abode of God] and on earth [the land, the material world] belongs to You. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom [dominion, reign], and You are exalted [lifted up, elevated] as head [chief, ruler] over all [everything, the whole creation]. word study 12 Both riches [wealth, abundance] and honor [glory, great esteem] come from You [as the ultimate source], and You are the ruler over all [everything]. In Your hands [an open hand; strength, a side or share] are power [strength] and might [bravery] to exalt [to magnify] and give strength [to strengthen] to all [every person]. word study 13 Now [at this time, in this moment] therefore, our God [Elohim, the one supreme God], we give [offer, express] You thanks [praise, gratitude], and we praise [celebrate, honor] Your glorious [beautiful, beauteous] name [identity, character, reputation]. word study 14 But who am I [what is my identity], and who are my people [my nation, my community], that we should be able to give [offer, provide] as generously [willingly, freely] as this [to this extent]? For everything [all things, the whole] comes from You [proceeds from Your hand], and from Your own hand [Your power, Your provision] we have given [offered, returned] to You [back to Your ownership]. word study 15 For we [as temporary residents, sojourners] are foreigners [strangers, without inherited rights] and strangers [resident aliens, like our ancestors] in Your presence [before Your face, in Your sight], as were all our forefathers [fathers, ancestors]. Our days [time, lifespan] on earth [the land, this world] are like a shadow [a dark area, a fleeting moment], without hope [no abiding, no lasting stay]. word study 16 O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] our God [Elohim, the supreme God], from Your hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] comes all [everything, the entirety] this abundance [wealth, riches] that we have provided [prepared, gathered] to build [construct, establish] You a house [dwelling place, temple] for Your holy [set-apart, sacred] Name [identity, character], and all [everything] of it belongs to You [is Yours, under Your authority]. word study 17 I know [am fully aware, have come to understand], my God [Elohim, the supreme God], that You test [examine, prove] the heart [the innermost part of a person, including their mind, will, and emotions] and delight [take pleasure, are pleased] in uprightness [righteousness, moral integrity]. All these things I have given [offered, provided] willingly [freely, with a willing heart] and with an upright [morally straight, just] heart, and now I have seen [observed, perceived] Your people [Your nation, those who belong to You] who are present [gathered, assembled] here giving [offering, providing] joyfully [with joy, gladly] and willingly [freely, with a willing spirit] to You. word study 18 O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], God [Elohim, the supreme God] of our fathers [ancestors, forefathers] Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, keep [protect, watch over] this desire [longing, intention] forever [always, eternally] in the intentions [thoughts, plans] of the hearts [minds, wills] of Your people [nation, community], and direct [establish, prepare] their hearts [innermost beings] toward [to, unto] You. word study 19 And give my son [offspring, descendant] Solomon a whole [perfect, complete] heart to keep [obey, guard] and carry out [fulfill, accomplish] all Your commandments [laws], decrees [ordinances, statutes], and statutes [regulations, precepts], and to build [construct, establish] Your palace [temple, royal house] for which I have made [prepared, provided] provision [arrangements, preparations].” word study 20 Then David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] said to the whole assembly [congregation, group of people gathered together], “Blessed [praise, honor] be the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God].” So the whole assembly [all the people] blessed [praised, honored] the LORD [Yehovah], the God [Elohim] of their fathers [ancestors, forefathers]. They bowed down [shrivelled up, bent the body in deference] and paid homage [worshipped, showed respect] to the LORD [Yehovah] and to the king [the royal person, King David]. word study 21 The next day [following that event, on the morrow] they offered [sacrificed, presented to God] sacrifices [to the Lord, as acts of worship] and presented [caused to ascend, offered] burnt offerings to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]: a thousand [a large number, a multitude] bulls [young oxen, as a sacrifice], a thousand rams [strong male sheep, as an offering], and a thousand lambs [young sheep], along with their drink offerings [libations, poured out to God], and other sacrifices [victims, presented to the Lord] in abundance [great quantity, overflowing] for all [every single one, the entirety of] Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people]. word study 22 That day [in the presence of Yahweh, with great festivity] they ate [partook of food, feasted] and drank [imbibed, celebrated] with great joy [gladness, rejoicing] in the presence [before the face, in the sight] of the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God]. Then, for a second time [again, once more], they designated [appointed, ordained] David’s son Solomon [peaceful ruler] as king [ruler, leader], anointing [consecrating, setting apart] him before the LORD [in God’s presence, to God’s service] as ruler [leader, commander], and Zadok [righteous, just] as the priest [spiritual leader, mediator]. word study 23 So Solomon [the peaceful one] sat [to dwell, remain] on the throne [seat of power, authority] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] as king [royal ruler, monarch] in place of [instead of, succeeding] his father [ancestor, paternal figure] David. He prospered [to rush, succeed, flourish], and all [everything, the whole] Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people] obeyed [to hear, listen, heed] him. word study 24 All [every single one, the entire group] the officials [rulers, leaders] and mighty men [strong warriors, champions], as well as [in addition to, including] all of King David’s [the monarch, ruler of Israel] sons [descendants, heirs], pledged [gave, submitted] their allegiance [loyalty, devotion] to King [the monarch, ruler] Solomon [the peaceful one]. word study 25 The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] highly exalted [magnified, made great] Solomon in the sight [eye, presence] of all [every, the whole] Israel and bestowed [gave, put] on him royal [kingly, majestic] majesty [splendor, glory] such as [like, similar to] had not been bestowed [given, granted] on any [no, not one] king in Israel before him [previously, earlier]. word study 26 David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] son [a descendant or grandson] of Jesse [I possess, a member of the tribe of Judah] was king [to reign or rule as a king, exercising authority] over [on or above, with responsibility for] all [everything, the whole] Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, referring to his descendants]. word study 27 The length [duration, span] of David’s reign [rule, kingdom] over Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people] was forty years—seven years in Hebron [a city in Palestine, a place of rest] and thirty-three years in Jerusalem [the city of peace, the capital of Israel]. word study 28 He died [in a good old age] at a ripe old age [satisfied with days], full of years [days, a long life], riches [wealth, treasures], and honor [glory, great respect], and his son [descendant, successor] Solomon [king of Israel] reigned [ruled, took the throne] in his place [stead, position]. word study 29 Now the acts [all the events, from beginning to end] of King David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel], from first [the primary, initial] to last [the final, concluding], are indeed written [recorded, inscribed] in the Chronicles [words, things, matters] of Samuel [Shemuel, a judge and prophet] the Seer [one who sees, a prophet], the Chronicles [history, records] of Nathan [a prophet, giver] the Prophet [one who speaks for God], and the Chronicles [accounts, writings] of Gad [the seventh son of Jacob, founder of the tribe of Gad] the Seer [one who receives visions from God], word study 30 together with [in conjunction with, accompanying] all the details of his reign [royal power, kingdom rule], his might [strength, power, bravery], and the circumstances [events, experiences, times] that came upon [happened to, occurred over] him and Israel [God’s chosen people] and all the kingdoms [nations, territories] of the lands [countries, regions]. word study
