1 Corinthians 5

BSA

1 It is actually reported [heard and understood] that there is [exists and is practiced] sexual immorality [fornication, including adultery and incest] among you, and of a kind [such as this, a specific type] that is intolerable [not even named or accepted] even among pagans [Gentiles, non-Jewish people]: A man has [is living with, in a relationship with] his father’s wife [stepmother, the wife of his father]. word study 2 And you are proud [puffed up, arrogant]! Shouldn’t you rather have been stricken with grief [mourned, felt deep sorrow] and have removed [expelled, taken away] from your fellowship [midst, community] the man who did this [committed this deed, acted in this way]? word study 3 Although I [as absent in body, but present in spirit] am absent from you in body [physically distant], I am present with you in spirit [through the Holy Spirit, in spiritual union], and I have already [even now, beforehand] pronounced judgment [made a decision, condemned] on the one who did this [committed this deed, wrought this thing], just as if I were present [as though I were there in person]. word study 4 When you are assembled [gathered together, collected as one body] in the name [character, authority, reputation] of our Lord [Master, Savior, God] Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] and I am with you [in close association] in spirit [breath, vital principle], along with [accompanied by, empowered by] the power [strength, miraculous ability] of the Lord [Master, God] Jesus [Christ, the anointed one], word study 5 hand this man over [to be surrendered, yielded up] to Satan [the Adversary, accuser] for the destruction [ruin, punishment] of the flesh [physical body, sinful nature], so that his spirit [breath, vital principle] may be saved [delivered, protected] on the Day [a 24-hour period, a period of time] of the Lord [God, Master, Jesus Christ]. word study 6 Your boasting [glorying, pride] is not good [beneficial, wholesome]. Do you not know [perceive, understand] that a little [small, humble] leaven [yeast, corrupting influence] works through [leavens, spreads to] the whole [entire, complete] batch of dough [lump, mass]? word study 7 Get rid of the old [stale, decayed] leaven, that you may be a new [fresh, renewed] unleavened batch, as you really are [in your true nature, spiritually]. For Christ [the Anointed One, our Messiah], our Passover lamb [sacrificial victim, atoning for our sins], has been sacrificed [offered up, slain]. word study 8 Therefore let us keep the feast [celebrate this festival], not with the old [stale, outdated] bread, leavened [infused] with malice [evil intentions] and wickedness [moral depravity], but with the unleavened [pure, without yeast] bread of sincerity [genuine, heartfelt] and of truth [reality, authenticity]. word study 9 I wrote [in a previous letter, previously] you [directly, personally] in my letter not [by no means, lest] to associate with [keep company, mix] sexually immoral people [fornicators, those who engage in sexual sin]. word study 10 I was not including the sexually immoral [fornicators, those who engage in illicit sex] of this world, or the greedy [covetous, desiring more] and swindlers [rapacious, taking advantage of others], or idolaters [those who worship false gods]. In that case you would have to leave [go out from, depart] this world [the earthly realm, the system of humanity]. word study 11 But now I am writing you not to associate [keep company, have fellowship] with anyone who claims to be a brother [a fellow believer, a Christian] but is sexually immoral [a fornicator, engaging in sinful acts] or greedy [covetous, desiring more], an idolater [one who worships false gods] or a verbal abuser [a reviler, speaking abusively], a drunkard [intoxicated, given to excess] or a swindler [rapacious, taking advantage of others]. With such a man [someone of this character] do not even eat [share a meal, have close fellowship]. word study 12 What business [or concern, responsibility] of mine is it to judge [make a decision, form an opinion] those outside [externally, beyond] the church [the community of believers]? Are you not [certainly, absolutely] to judge [evaluate, discern] those inside [within, among]? word study 13 God [the supreme Judge, Elohim] will judge [condemn, punish] those outside [not part of the church, without faith]. “Expel [remove, put away] the wicked [evil, immoral] man from among you [your midst, community].” word study
