1 Samuel 19
BSA1 Then Saul [the king, Shaul] ordered [spoke to, commanded] his son Jonathan [Jehovah has given] and all [every one of] his servants [slaves, attendants] to kill [put to death, slay] David. But Jonathan [Saul’s son] delighted [was pleased, had great affection] greatly [exceedingly, very much] in [toward, with] David, word study 2 so he warned David, saying, “My father [the king and my earthly father] Saul intends [is seeking, is purposing] to kill [to put to death, to slay] you [as his enemy]. Be on your guard [take heed, be careful] in the morning [at the break of day]; find a secret [hidden, secluded] place and hide [conceal yourself, be hidden] there [in a secure location]. word study 3 I [emphatically, as the subject] will go out [to come out, to depart] and stand [in a strong sense, firmly] beside my father [my earthly father] in the field [a flat area of land, a place of cultivation] where you [specifically, David] are, so I can ask [speak, communicate] about you [concerning your well-being, your situation]. And if I find out [see, discover, perceive] anything [what, something], I will tell [declare, inform] you [openly, clearly].” word study 4 Then Jonathan [God has given] spoke well [positively, good things] of David to his father [parent, ancestor] Saul and said to him, “The king [ruler, monarch] should not sin [miss the mark, go wrong] against his servant [slave, bondservant] David; he has not sinned [done wrong, erred] against you. In fact, his actions [deeds, works] have been highly [exceedingly, very] beneficial [good, pleasant] to you. word study 5 He took his life [soul, living being] in his hands [palm, grasp] when he struck down [slew, smote] the Philistine [enemy of Israel], and the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] worked [made, brought about] a great [large, significant] salvation [deliverance, rescue] for all [every, entire] Israel [the descendants of Jacob]. You saw [looked, gazed] it and rejoiced [were glad, celebrated], so why would you sin [miss the mark, go wrong] against innocent [guiltless, morally clean] blood [life, vital force] by killing David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] for no reason [without cause, in vain]?” word study 6 Saul [the desired one, Shaul] listened [to hear and obey, gave attention to] to the voice [sound or speech, words spoken] of Jonathan [Jehovah has given, God’s gift] and swore [made a promise, took an oath] an oath: “As surely as [if, or because] the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] lives [is alive, has life], David will not be put to death [slain, killed, die].” word study 7 So Jonathan [the son of King Saul and a friend of David] summoned David and told [declared, made known] him all these things [events, matters]. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul [the king of Israel, his father] to serve [minister, attend] him as he had before [previously, in times past]. word study 8 When war [battle, conflict] broke out again, David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] went out and fought [engaged in combat, clashed with] the Philistines [a person from the region of Philistia, immigrants from other places] and struck them with such a mighty [great, powerful] blow [wound, carnage] that they fled [quickly left, escaped] before him [from his presence, face to face]. word study 9 But as Saul [Shaul, the desired one] was sitting [to dwell, remain] in his house [dwelling place, home] with his spear [a thrusting weapon, lance] in his hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share], a spirit [breath of life, emotional state] of distress [moral or natural harm, adversity] from the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] came upon him [to be, exist, come into being]. While David [the beloved king] was playing [to play a musical instrument, especially a stringed one] the harp, word study 10 Saul [sought to] tried to pin him to the wall [the barrier, the dividing structure] with his spear [javelin, thrusting lance]. But the spear [the weapon, the instrument of attack] struck the wall [the obstacle, the barrier] and David [the youngest son of Jesse, the future king] eluded him [slipped away, dodged], ran away [fled, escaped quickly], and escaped [was delivered, slipped away to safety] that night [the time of darkness, the period of adversity]. word study 11 Then Saul [Shaul, the king who desired] sent messengers [representatives] to David’s house [dwelling place, family home] to watch him [keep guard, observe] and kill him [put to death, slay] in the morning [at the break of day, a new beginning]. But David’s wife Michal [Merab, the daughter of the king] warned him, “If you do not run for your life [escape, deliver your soul] tonight [in the darkness, a time of adversity], tomorrow [in the future, a new day] you will be dead [killed, slain, without life]!” word study 12 So Michal [the daughter of King Saul] lowered David [the future king of Israel] from the window [a hole in the wall, an opening for escape], and he ran away [fled, went in flight] and escaped [was delivered, slipped away to safety]. word study 13 Then Michal [the daughter of King Saul] took a household idol [teraphim, a family image] and laid it in the bed [couch or sleeping place], placed some goat hair [or a pillow of goats’ hair] on its head [or headrest], and covered it with a garment [or clothing, a cloth]. word study 14 When Saul [Shaul, the desired one] sent [to dispatch, to commission] the messengers [representatives] to seize [to take, to capture] David, Michal said, “He is [suffering from, afflicted with] ill [sick, weak].” word study 15 But Saul [Shaul, the desired one] sent the messengers [representatives] back to see [look after, care for] David and told them, “Bring him up [ascend, rise] to me in his bed [couch, place of rest] so I can kill [slay, put to death] him [take his life, destroy him].” word study 16 And when the messengers [representatives] entered, there was the idol [teraphim, household image] in the bed [couch, resting place] with the quilt [pillow, mattress] of goats’ hair [from female goats] on its head. word study 17 And Saul [Shaul, the desired one] said to Michal [the daughter of King Saul], “Why did you deceive [betray, mislead] me like this [in this way, thus]? You sent my enemy [adversary, one who hates me] away and he has escaped [slipped away to safety, been delivered]!” Michal replied, “He said to me, ‘Help me get away [let me go, depart], or I will kill [put to death, destroy] you!’” word study 18 So David [fled, escaped] ran away and escaped [was delivered, slipped away to safety]. And he went [came, approached] to Samuel [Shemuel, the prophet and judge] at Ramah [a city in Palestine, a place of battle] and told [declared, openly shared] him all [everything, the whole story] that Saul [Shaul, the king] had done [made, acted] to him. Then he and Samuel [the prophet] went [walked, journeyed] to Naioth and stayed [dwelt, remained] there. word study 19 When Saul [the king, Shaul] was told [informed, declared to] that David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] was at Naioth [a community of prophets, a dwelling place] in Ramah [a city in Palestine, a place of battle], word study 20 he sent [dispatched, commissioned] messengers [representatives] to capture [seize, take] him. But when they saw the group [company, assembly] of prophets [spokesmen for God, seers] prophesying [speaking under divine inspiration, foretelling], with Samuel [Shemuel, hearer of God] leading [standing, presiding] them, the Spirit [breath of God] of God [Elohim, the supreme Deity] came upon [fell on, rested upon] them, and Saul’s messengers [servants, agents] also began to prophesy [speak ecstatically, foretell]. word study 21 When this was reported [told, declared openly] to Saul [Shaul, the desired one], he sent [dispatched, departed] more messengers [representatives], but they began to prophesy [speak under divine influence, foretell] as well [also, too]. So Saul tried again [added, increased his efforts] and sent messengers [emissaries, ambassadors] a third time [for the third instance], and even they [those men, the same ones] began to prophesy [utter predictions, speak as prophets]. word study 22 Finally, Saul [personally] himself left for Ramah [a city in Palestine, a place of battle] and came to the large cistern [a great well, a pit] at Secu [a place near Ramah], where he asked [inquired, sought information], “Where [in what place, at what location] are Samuel [Shemuel, a judge and prophet] and David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel]?” “At Naioth [a community of prophets, a dwelling place] in Ramah [the city, a place of battle],” he was told [informed, given an answer]. word study 23 So Saul went [to walk, to move] to Naioth [a community of prophets] in Ramah [a city in Palestine, a place of battle]. But the Spirit [the breath of life, the divine influence] of God [Elohim, the one supreme God] came upon [to rest on, to influence] even Saul, and he walked [to move, to go] along prophesying [to speak under the divine influence, to foretell] until he came to Naioth [the dwelling place of prophets] in Ramah [the city of battle]. word study 24 Then Saul [removed] stripped off his robes [garments, clothing] and also prophesied [spoke under divine influence, foretold] before Samuel [Shemuel, the prophet and judge]. And he collapsed [fell down, lay down] and lay naked [without clothing, exposed] all that day [the period of light, a 24-hour cycle] and night [the time of darkness, a period of rest]. That is why it is said [people say, they ask], “Is Saul [Shaul, the desired one] also [too, even] among the prophets [those who speak for God, spokespersons]?” word study
