BSA

1 After the king [the monarch, ruler] had settled [dwelt, sat] into his palace [house, dwelling place] and the LORD [Yehovah, God] had given him rest [peace, tranquility] from all [every, everything] his enemies [adversaries, foes] around [surrounding, encompassing] him, word study 2 he said [to convey his thoughts, spoke] to Nathan [God’s messenger] the prophet [one who speaks for God], “Here I am [I exist, I am present], living [dwelling, residing] in a house [a dwelling place, palace] of cedar [a strong and durable wood], while [at the same time, meanwhile] the ark [a chest, container] of God [Elohim, the supreme God] remains [stays, abides] in a tent [a portable shelter, tabernacle, curtain].” word study 3 And Nathan [the prophet, giver] replied to the king, “Go [walk, proceed] and do [make, accomplish] all [everything, every matter] that is in your [innermost] heart [mind, will, emotions], for [because, since] the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] is with [together, accompanying] you [as your helper].” word study 4 But that [same] night [period of darkness, time of adversity] the word [divine message, declaration] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] came [was given, appeared] to Nathan [the prophet, giver], saying [to speak, command], word study 5 “Go and tell My servant [faithful attendant, bondslave] David that this is what the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] says: Are you [the chosen leader, the anointed one] the one to build [construct, establish] for Me a house [dwelling place, temple] to dwell [reside, rest] in? word study 6 For I have not dwelt [lived, resided] in a house [dwelling place, temple] from the day [since the time] I brought [led, ascended] the Israelites [sons of Israel, descendants of Jacob] up out of Egypt [the land of bondage] until this day [the present time], but I have moved about [walked, traveled] with a tent [tabernacle, portable sanctuary] as My dwelling [place of residence, abode]. word study 7 In all [every single one of] My journeys [travels, wanderings] with all [every one of] the Israelites, have I ever asked [spoken a word to, commanded] any of the leaders [judges, shepherds] I appointed [commanded, ordained] to shepherd [care for, feed] My people [nation, congregation] Israel [the descendants of Jacob], ‘Why haven’t you built [constructed, established] Me a house [dwelling place, temple] of cedar [a strong and durable wood]?’ word study 8 Now then [at this time, in this manner], you are to tell My servant [faithful attendant, devoted follower] David that this is what the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] of Hosts [armies, heavenly forces] says: I took you from the pasture [sheepcote, dwelling place], from following the flock [tending sheep, caring for], to be the ruler [leader, commander] over My people [nation, community] Israel [God’s chosen, descendants of Jacob]. word study 9 I have been with [always close to, helped] you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off [destroyed, eliminated] all your enemies [adversaries, those who oppose you] from before you. Now I will make for you a name [reputation, character] like [similar to, comparable with] the greatest [most prominent, renowned] in the land [earth, territory]. word study 10 And I will provide [appoint, establish] a place [location, dwelling] for My people [nation, descendants] Israel [the chosen ones, Jacob’s descendants] and will plant [establish, settle] them so that they may dwell [reside, live] in a place [land, home] of their own [possession, inheritance] and be disturbed [troubled, shaken] no more [not again, never]. No longer [not anymore, from now on] will the sons [descendants, children] of wickedness [injustice, evil] oppress [afflict, trouble] them as they did at the beginning [first, initially] word study 11 and have done since the day [from the very beginning, the time that I appointed] I appointed [to command, give orders] judges [to govern, vindicate] over My people [a nation, a tribe] Israel [the descendants of Jacob]. I will give you rest [to settle down, remain in one place] from all [everything, every single one] your enemies [those who hate or oppose you]. The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] declares [to tell, stand boldly] to you that He Himself [Yehovah, God Almighty] will establish [to make, build] a house [a dwelling place, a family home] for you [as a gift, a promise]. word study 12 And when your days [the time appointed for you, your lifetime] are fulfilled [completed, brought to an end] and you rest [sleep, lie down] with your fathers [ancestors, those who have gone before], I will raise up [establish, bring to power] your descendant [seed, offspring] after you, who will come from [proceed out of] your own body [belly, inner being], and I will establish [set up, make firm] his kingdom [dominion, reign]. word study 13 He [the king, the ruler] will build [construct, establish] a house [temple, dwelling place] for My Name [My reputation, My character], and I will establish [set up, confirm] the throne [seat of power, authority] of his kingdom [dominion, rule] forever [always, eternally]. word study 14 I [the Lord] will be his Father [provider, protector, and guide], and he will be My son [child, descendant, and heir]. When he does wrong [commits iniquity, sins, or rebels], I will discipline him with the rod [staff, scepter] of men [humanity, mortals, or earthly rulers] and with the blows [plagues, stripes, or chastisements] of the sons of men [human beings, descendants of Adam, or people]. word study 15 But My loving devotion [kindness, mercy, or pity] will never [not at all, under no circumstances] be removed [to turn aside, depart] from him as I removed [took away, departed from] it from Saul [Shaul, the desired one], whom I moved [put away, removed] out of your way [from before you, from being king]. word study 16 Your house [dwelling place, family lineage] and kingdom [dominion, reign] will endure [be established, remain] forever [always, eternally] before Me [in My presence], and your throne [seat of power, authority] will be established [set up, secured] forever [till the end of time].” word study 17 So Nathan [the prophet, giver] relayed to David [the king of Israel] all [everything, the entirety] the words [messages, communications] of this [specific, divine] entire vision [revelation]. word study 18 Then King David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] went in, sat [to dwell, remain] before the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], and said, “Who [what person, which one] am I, O Lord GOD [Adonay, a title of reverence], and what is my house [family, dwelling place], that You have brought me [caused me to come, led me] this far [until now, to this point]? word study 19 And as if this [a small, insignificant thing] was a small thing in Your eyes [the source of Your divine knowledge and insight], O Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah], You have also spoken [promised, communicated] about the future [distant, long-term plans] of the house [family, dynasty] of Your servant [one who serves and obeys]. Is this [usual way] Your custom [manner, tradition] with man [humanity, the descendants of Adam], O Lord [the supreme Ruler] GOD [the all-knowing, all-powerful One]? word study 20 What more [or how] can David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] say to You? For You know [are intimately aware of, have discerning knowledge of] Your servant [one who serves, a bondservant], O Lord [Adonay, a title of reverence] GOD [Yehovah]. word study 21 For the sake of [because of, on account of] Your word [promise, divine message] and according to [in harmony with, from] Your own heart [innermost being, will], You have accomplished [done, brought about] this great [mighty, magnificent] thing [deed, work] and revealed [made known, shown] it to Your servant [one who serves, attends]. word study 22 How great [magnified, exalted] You are, O Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah]! For there is none [nothing, no one] like You, and there is no God [Elohim, divine being] but You, according to [in agreement with, based on] everything we have heard [listened, obeyed] with our own ears [the ability to hear, understand]. word study 23 And who is like Your people Israel [a unique nation, a chosen people]—the one nation on earth [a singular and special land] whom God [Elohim, the supreme Redeemer] went out to redeem [to ransom, to set free] as a people for Himself and to make a name [a reputation, a legacy] for Himself? You performed great [mighty, awe-inspiring] and awesome wonders [fearful, extraordinary deeds] by driving out nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples] and their gods from before Your people, whom You redeemed [purchased, freed] for Yourself from Egypt [a land of bondage, a place of slavery]. word study 24 For You have established [set up, ordained] Your people Israel [as a nation, Your chosen ones] as Your very own [beloved, special treasure] forever [for all eternity, till the end of time], and You, O LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], have become their God [Elohim, their divine Ruler]. word study 25 And now [at this time, in this moment], O LORD God [Yehovah, the national name for God], confirm [establish, make certain] forever [for all eternity, always] the word [promise, covenant] You have spoken [communicated, promised] concerning [about, regarding] Your servant [slave, bondservant] and his house [family, household]. Do [make, bring to pass] as You have promised [spoken, declared], word study 26 so that Your name [Your identity, honor, and character] will be magnified [greatly honored, exalted] forever [for all eternity, always] when it is said, ‘The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] of Hosts [the Commander of the armies of angels] is God [Elohim, the one supreme God] over Israel [the descendants of Jacob].’ And the house [the family, descendants] of Your servant [one who serves, a slave] David will be established [set up, firmly founded] before You [in Your presence, face to face]. word study 27 For You, O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] of Hosts [army, a large group of people or things], the God [Elohim, the supreme God] of Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, also referring to his descendants], have revealed [uncovered, made known] this to Your servant [one who serves God or a human master] when You said, ‘I will build [establish, construct] a house [a dwelling place, a family] for you [your descendants, your family].’ Therefore Your servant [one who serves God] has found [discovered, attained] the courage [strength, confidence] to offer [present, bring] this prayer [supplication, request] to You [toward You, in Your direction]. word study 28 And now [at this moment, in this present time], O Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah], You are God [Elohim, the supreme Deity]! Your words [divine declarations, promises] are true [faithful, trustworthy, having truth], and You have promised [spoken, declared] this goodness [blessing, kindness, welfare] to Your servant [one who serves, a bondservant]. word study 29 Now therefore, may it please You [be willing, undertake] to bless [praise, honor] the house [dwelling place, family] of Your servant [slave, one who serves], that it may continue [endure, remain] forever [always, eternally] before You [in Your presence, face to face]. For You, O Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah, the covenant-keeping God], have spoken [promised, declared], and with Your blessing [gift, prosperity] the house [family line, descendants] of Your servant [one who serves You] will be blessed [honored, praised] forever [through all eternity].” word study
