2 Timothy 1
BSA1 Paul [a delegate of Jesus], an apostle of Christ Jesus [the Messiah, the Anointed One] by the will [desire, intention] of God [the one true deity], according to the promise [commitment, assurance] of life [eternal, spiritual existence] in Christ Jesus [the Savior, the Son of God], word study 2 To Timothy [my dearly beloved son], my beloved [cherished] child: Grace [unmerited favor, divine influence], mercy [pity, compassion], and peace [harmony, prosperity] from God [supreme deity] the Father and Christ [the anointed, Messiah] Jesus our Lord [master, ruler]. word study 3 I thank God [the one true deity], whom I serve [minister, worship] with a clear [pure, clean] conscience [moral awareness, inner guide] as did my forefathers [ancestors, parents], as I constantly [without ceasing, continuously] remember you [have remembrance of you, think of you] night [the time of darkness] and day [a 24-hour period] in my prayers [petitions, supplications]. word study 4 Recalling [remembering, being mindful of] your tears [teardrops, emotional sorrow], I long [greatly desire, yearn] to see [to perceive, to attend to] you so that I may be filled [made complete, satisfied] with joy [deep and lasting happiness]. word study 5 I am reminded [having in mind, taking remembrance] of your sincere [unfeigned, genuine] faith [trust, confidence in God], which first [at the beginning, initially] dwelt [lived, resided] in your grandmother [mother’s mother] Lois and your mother [parent] Eunice, and I am convinced [persuaded, certain] is in you as well [also, too]. word study 6 For this reason [because of your faith] I remind [to bring to your remembrance] you to fan into flame [to rekindle, stir up] the gift [charisma, a divine gratuity] of God [the one true deity], which is in you [within your heart, through the Holy Spirit] through [by means of, as a result of] the laying on [imposition, placement] of my hands [a symbol of blessing, authority]. word study 7 For God [the one true deity] has not given us a spirit [the vital principle] of fear [or timidity, cowardice], but of power [and strength, miraculous ability], love [unconditional, divine affection], and self-control [self-discipline, a sound mind]. word study 8 So do not be ashamed [feel regret or embarrassment] of the testimony [witness or evidence] of our Lord [God, the supreme authority], or of me, His prisoner [captive, one held in bonds]. Instead, join me in suffering [enduring hardship, bearing evil treatment] for the gospel [good news, message of salvation] by the power [strength, miraculous ability] of God [the one true deity]. word study 9 He has saved [rescued, delivered] us and called [invited, summoned] us to a holy [set apart, sanctified] calling, not because of our works [deeds, actions], but by His own [personal, private] purpose [plan, intention] and by the grace [unmerited favor, kindness] He granted [gave, bestowed] us in Christ Jesus [the Messiah, the Anointed One] before [prior to, preceding] time [eternity, ages] began. word study 10 And now [at this present time, in the current era] He has revealed [made manifest, brought to light] this grace [unmerited favor, divine kindness] through the appearing [epiphany, manifestation] of our Savior [Rescuer, Deliverer], Christ Jesus [the Anointed One, the Messiah], who has abolished [done away with, made powerless] death [physical and spiritual separation from God] and illuminated [shed light on, made visible] the way to life [eternal existence, spiritual vitality] and immortality [incorruptibility, endless existence] through the gospel [good news, message of salvation], word study 11 to which [toward this purpose, for this reason] I was appointed [chosen, set apart] as a preacher [herald of divine truth, messenger], an apostle [delegate, messenger of Jesus Christ], and a teacher [instructor, guide]. word study 12 For this reason [because of my faith, due to my trust], even though I suffer [endure hardship, experience pain] as I do, I am not ashamed [do not feel regret, am not embarrassed]; for I know [am aware of, have spiritual insight into] whom I have believed [trusted in, have faith in], and I am convinced [fully persuaded, have confidence] that He is able [has the power, is capable] to guard [protect, watch over] what I have entrusted [committed, given over] to Him for that day [the day of reckoning, the future]. word study 13 Hold on to the pattern [example, model to follow] of sound [healthy, uncorrupt] teaching [words, message] you have heard [listened, understood] from me, with the faith [trust, confidence] and love [unconditional, divine affection] that are in [belong to, characterize] Christ Jesus [the Anointed One, God’s salvation]. word study 14 Guard [keep safe, watch over] the treasure [good thing, deposit] entrusted [committed] to you, with the help [through] of the Holy [set apart, sacred] Spirit [breath, divine presence] who dwells [lives, resides] in us [within believers]. word study 15 You know [are aware, have perceived] that everyone [all, every person] in the Province [region, area] of Asia [the Roman province of Asia Minor] has deserted [turned away, abandoned] me, including [among them, such as] Phygelus [a Christian who turned away] and Hermogenes [born of Hermes, an apostate]. word study 16 May the Lord [God, the supreme authority] grant [bestow, give generously] mercy [pity, compassion] to the household [family] of Onesiphorus [profit-bearer, a Christian who helped Paul], because he has often [frequently] refreshed [revived, given rest] me and was unashamed [not embarrassed] of my chains [bonds, imprisonment]. word study 17 Indeed, when he arrived [came to be, was present] in Rome [the capital city of Italy], he searched [sought out very diligently, went in search of] diligently [eagerly, with earnestness] until he found [discovered, met with] me [I, the speaker, the apostle]. word study 18 May the Lord [the supreme Master, God] grant Onesiphorus [showing mercy, pity] His mercy [compassion, kindness] on that day [the day of judgment]. You know very well how much he ministered [served, attended to needs] to me in Ephesus [the city, a major center of early Christianity]. word study
