1 “When all [every single one, without exception] these things [events, circumstances, blessings and curses] come upon you—the blessings [gifts, prosperity, divine favor] and curses [punishments, judgments, afflictions] I have set [established, ordained, decreed] before you—and you call [remember, reflect on, consider] them to mind [to your heart, in your thoughts] in all [every one of, the entirety of] the nations [Gentile countries, foreign lands] to which the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] your God [Elohim, the one true God] has banished [driven, expelled, scattered] you, word study 2 and when you [and your descendants] and your children return [turn back, come back to] to the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] your God [Elohim, the supreme deity] and obey [listen to, heed] His voice [the sound of His speaking, the divine command] with all [every part of] your heart [the innermost part of your being, including mind, will, and emotions] and all [every aspect of] your soul [your living being, your inner self] according to [in accordance with, following] everything I am giving [commanding, instructing] you today [at this present time, in this current era], word study 3 then He will restore [return, bring back] you from captivity [being held prisoner, exile] and have compassion [pity, mercy] on you and gather [collect, assemble] you from all [every, the whole] the nations [peoples, countries] to which the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God] has scattered [dispersed, driven out] you. word study 4 Even if you have been banished [driven out, expelled] to the farthest horizon [the uttermost parts of heaven, the ends of the earth], He will gather [collect, assemble] you and return [bring back, fetch] you from there [that place, thence]. word study 5 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God] will bring [lead, guide] you into the land [territory, region] your fathers [ancestors, forefathers] possessed [inherited, occupied], and you will take possession [inherit, occupy] of it. He will cause you to prosper [do you good, bless] and multiply [increase, grow] more than your fathers [ancestors, forefathers]. word study 6 The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God] will circumcise [cut off, remove] your hearts [the innermost part of a person, including their mind, will, and emotions] and the hearts [the innermost part of a person, including their mind, will, and emotions] of your descendants [seed, offspring], and you will love [have affection for, be devoted to] Him with all [everything, the whole of] your heart [the innermost part of a person, including their mind, will, and emotions] and with all [everything, the whole of] your soul [the essence of a person, the living being], so that you may live [be alive, have life, physically and spiritually]. word study 7 Then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God] will put [place, set, or bestow] all these curses [oaths, promises with serious consequences] upon [on, above, or against] your enemies [adversaries, those who hate or oppose you] who hate [feel intense dislike or hostility towards] you and persecute [pursue, chase after, or oppress] you. word study 8 And you [the individual, as a child of God] will again obey [listen and respond to, heed] the voice [sound, utterance] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] and follow [walk in, keep] all [every, entire] His commandments [laws, instructions] I [the speaker] am giving [commanding, instructing] you [as an individual, with personal responsibility] today [in this present time, at this moment]. word study 9 So the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God] will make you abound [be fertile, have more than enough] in all [every aspect of] the work [deeds, actions] of your hands [strength, power] and in the fruit [product, result] of your womb [belly, seat of emotions], the offspring [children, descendants] of your livestock [animals, cattle], and the produce [crops, harvest] of your land [earth, soil]. Indeed, the LORD will again [once more, as in the past] delight [rejoice, take pleasure] in your goodness [righteousness, virtue], as He delighted [rejoiced, was pleased] in that of your fathers [ancestors, forefathers], word study 10 if you obey [listen and follow] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God by keeping [guarding, protecting] His commandments [laws, decrees] and statutes [ordinances, rules] that are written [recorded, inscribed] in this Book of the Law [the scroll of instruction], and if you turn [return, come back] to Him with all [everything, your entire being] your heart [mind, will, emotions] and with all [every part of] your soul [living being, essence]. word study 11 For this [specific, divine] commandment [instruction, law] I give you today [at this present time] is not [certainly not] too difficult [hard, wonderful] for you or [neither] beyond [far off, distant] your reach [ability, understanding]. word study 12 It is not [absent or nonexistent] in heaven [the spiritual realm, the abode of God], that you should need to ask [or say to yourself], ‘Who [what person or being] will ascend [go up or rise] into heaven [the celestial sphere] to get it [the law or commandment] for us and proclaim [declare or make known] it, that we may obey [hear and follow] it [the command or instruction]?’ word study 13 And it is not [absent, nonexistent] beyond the sea [a large body of water, the Mediterranean], that you should need to ask [inquire, seek], ‘Who [what person, which one] will cross [pass over, transition] the sea [the west, a sea in general] to get it [obtain, acquire] for us and proclaim [declare, announce] it, that we may obey [listen and follow, hear and do] it [the command, the word]?’ word study 14 But the word [very near, in close proximity] is very near [close to your heart, in your midst] you; it is in your mouth [lips, speech, and expression] and in your heart [innermost being, mind, and emotions], so that you may obey [follow, and do] it. word study 15 See [behold, consider], I have set [given, placed] before you today [at this present time] life [alive, living] and goodness [prosperity, what is pleasant], as well as death [the end of life, dying] and disaster [evil, what is bad]. word study 16 For I am commanding [giving orders, appointing] you today to love [have affection for, be devoted to] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God], to walk [go, move, conduct your life] in His ways [path, manner of life], and to keep [obey, guard, protect] His commandments [laws, rules], statutes [ordinances, decrees], and ordinances [judgments, decisions], so that you may live [have life, be revived] and increase [multiply, grow], and the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God may bless [praise, honor] you in the land [country, territory] that you are entering [going, coming] to possess [take control of, occupy]. word study 17 But if your heart [the innermost part of your being, including mind, will, and emotions] turns away [is drawn aside, becomes disloyal] and you do not listen [refuse to hear, disobey], but are drawn away [led astray, seduced] to bow down [prostrate yourself, worship] to other [foreign, false] gods [divine beings, idols] and worship [serve, obey] them, word study 18 I declare [warn, announce openly] to you today [at this moment, in this present time] that you will surely [certainly, without a doubt] perish [be destroyed, lost]; you shall not [never, under no circumstances] prolong [extend, make long] your days [time, lifespan] in the land [earth, territory] that you are crossing [passing over, transitioning] the Jordan [the river, a boundary] to possess [take ownership, occupy]. word study 19 I call heaven [the visible universe and the abode of God] and earth [the land, the material world] as witnesses [to testify against you, to affirm the truth] against you today that I have set before you life [physical and spiritual existence, being alive] and death [the end of physical life, separation from God], blessing [a gift from God, prosperity and praise] and cursing [a wish for harm or evil to come to someone]. Therefore choose [to select, to be chosen] life [eternal life, a relationship with God], so that you and your descendants [your offspring, your seed] may live [have life, be revived], word study 20 and that you may love [with affection and devotion] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God], obey [listen and heed] Him, and hold fast [cling and adhere] to Him. For He is your life [source of existence and vitality], and He will prolong [extend and lengthen] your life [days and years] in the land [the earth, the promised territory] that the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] swore [made a promise and vow] to give to your fathers [ancestors and patriarchs], to Abraham [the father of faith], Isaac [the son of promise], and Jacob [the one who wrestled with God].” word study
