1 Then the word [message from God, divine communication] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] came [existed, came into being] to me, saying [to speak, to command, to proclaim], word study 2 “Son [descendant, human] of man [Adam, humanity], how does the wood [tree, timber] of the vine [grapevine] surpass [excel, be more than] any other branch [small twig, pruned limb] among the trees [strong and firm objects, wooden planks] in the forest [copse of bushes, woodland]? word study 3 Can wood [from a tree, a strong and firm object] be taken [removed, obtained] from it to make [create, construct] something useful [beneficial, practical]? Or can one make [construct, fashion] from it a peg [a small pin, a nail] on which to hang [suspend, attach] utensils [articles, tools, all kinds of vessels]? word study 4 No, it is cast into the fire [to be consumed] for fuel. The fire devours [eats, consumes] both ends, and the middle [center, midst] is charred [scorched, burned]. Can it be useful [profitable, meet] for anything [any work, employment]? word study 5 Even when it was [completely, in its perfect state] whole, it could not be made [suitable, fit] useful [for any work or purpose]. How much less can it ever be useful [meet for any work] when the fire [burning, flame] has consumed [devoured, eaten away] it and charred [scorched, burned] it! word study 6 Therefore [in this manner, thus] this is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: ‘Like the wood [tree, timber] of the vine [grapevine] among the trees [forests, woods] of the forest [wilderness, woodland], which I have given [handed over, surrendered] to the fire [flame, blaze] for fuel [burning, combustion], so I will give up [abandon, surrender] the people [inhabitants, residents] of Jerusalem [the city of peace, the holy city]. word study 7 And I will set [turn, turn against] My face [presence, being] against them. Though they may have escaped [gone out from, survived] the fire [divine judgment, refining flame], yet another fire [punishing blaze, consuming passion] will consume [devour, eat up] them.
