Ezekiel 28

1 And the word [message, declaration] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] came [existed, was present] to me, saying [to speak, to declare, to command], word study 2 “Son of man [human, mortal], tell the ruler [leader, commander] of Tyre [a major Phoenician city] that this is what the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: Your heart [inner being, emotions] is proud [lifted up, exalted], and you have said, ‘I am a god [divine, deity]; I sit in the seat [throne, position] of gods [divine beings] in the heart [center, midst] of the sea [a large body of water].’ Yet you are a man [human, mortal] and not a god [divine, deity], though you have regarded your heart [inner being, emotions] as that of a god [having God’s nature]. word study 3 Behold [look, see], you [as an individual, personally] are wiser [intelligent, skilled, cunning] than Daniel [a wise and righteous man]; no [not any, none] secret [hidden thing, mystery] is hidden [concealed, unseen] from you [kept from your knowledge]! word study 4 By your [divine, godly] wisdom [skill, prudence, or good judgment] and understanding [insight, intelligence, or discretion] you have gained [acquired, obtained] your wealth [riches, power, or strength] and amassed [collected, gathered] gold [a valuable metal] and silver [a precious metal] for your treasuries [storehouses, repositories of wealth]. word study 5 By your great [abundance of, exceptional] skill [wisdom, prudence] in trading [merchandise, commerce] you have increased [multiplied, grown] your wealth [riches, power], but your heart [innermost being, mind] has grown proud [exulted, lifted up] because of it [your wealth, strength]. word study 6 Therefore [in this manner, thus] this is what the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: Because [for this reason, since] you regard [have set, think of] your heart [innermost being, mind] as the heart [center of wisdom, intellect] of a god [divine being, Elohim], word study 7 behold [look, see], I will bring [cause to come, summon] foreigners [strangers, non-Hebrew people] against you, the most ruthless [feared, terrifying] of nations [Gentile peoples]. They will draw [pull out, unsheathe] their swords [cutting instruments, weapons] against the beauty [loveliness, attractiveness] of your wisdom [prudence, good judgment] and will defile [profane, desecrate] your splendor [brightness, glorious beauty]. word study 8 They will bring you down [to destruction, to the underworld] to the Pit [a place of grave, corruption], and you will die [meet your end, perish] a violent [horrible, brutal] death [the death of them that are slain] in the heart [center, midst] of the seas [large bodies of water, the Mediterranean]. word study 9 Will you still say [claim, affirm], ‘I am a god [divine, having God’s nature],’ in the presence [face, before] of those who slay [kill, destroy] you? You will be only a man [mortal, human], not a god [deity, supernatural], in the hands [power, control] of those who wound [pierce, hurt] you. word study 10 You will die [a physical and spiritual death] the death [separation from God] of the uncircumcised [those without a covenant relationship with God] at the hands [power and authority] of foreigners [strangers, non-covenant people]. For [because, as a result of] I [the Lord, Adonay] have spoken [declared, uttered], declares the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah, the self-existent God].” word study 11 Again the word [message, utterance] of the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] came [was given, delivered] to me, saying [to speak, to declare], word study 12 “Son of man [human, a mortal], take up a lament [a song of grief, a dirge] for the king [ruler, monarch] of Tyre [a major Phoenician city] and tell him that this is what the Lord [Adonay, the supreme Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: ‘You were the seal [a mark of authentication, a stamp of perfection] of perfection [completeness, flawlessness], full [abundant, complete] of wisdom [skill, prudence, discernment] and perfect [complete, entire] in beauty [loveliness, attractiveness]. word study 13 You were in Eden [the garden of delight, paradise], the garden [a place of beauty and pleasure] of God [Elohim, the supreme Creator]. Every kind of precious [valuable, highly esteemed] stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald. Your mountings [settings, ornaments] and settings [fastenings, adornments] were crafted [skilled work, artwork] in gold [a valuable metal], prepared [established, set in place] on the day [a period of time, an era] of your creation [the act of bringing into existence, formation]. word study 14 You [as a guardian, a protector] were anointed [set apart, consecrated] as a guardian cherub [a powerful, winged angelic being], for I had ordained [appointed, designated] you. You were on the holy [set apart, sacred] mountain of God [Elohim, the supreme Ruler]; you walked [moved, dwelled] among the fiery [glowing, passionate] stones. word study 15 From the day [of your origin, since your creation] you were created you were blameless [perfect, unblemished] in your ways [manner of life, path of action]— until wickedness [injustice, moral evil] was found [discovered, uncovered] in you. word study 16 By the vastness [abundance, multitude] of your trade [merchandise, commerce], you were filled [made full, completed] with violence [cruelty, injustice], and you sinned [missed the mark, went wrong]. So I drove you in disgrace [shame, profaneness] from the mountain [hill] of God [Elohim, the supreme God], and I banished you, O guardian [covering, watching] cherub [angelic being], from among the fiery [burning, passionate] stones [rocks, precious gems]. word study 17 Your [exalted, lifted up] heart grew proud of your [outward, physical] beauty; you corrupted [ruined, destroyed] your wisdom [good judgment, discernment] because of your [inward, spiritual] splendor [brightness, glory]; so I cast [threw, hurled] you to the earth [land, ground]; I made you a spectacle [an object of gaze, a sight] before kings [rulers, monarchs]. word study 18 By the multitude [abundance, greatness] of your iniquities [moral evil, sin] and the dishonesty [injustice, unrighteousness] of your trading [merchandise, commerce] you have profaned [defiled, desecrated] your sanctuaries [holy places, temples]. So I made fire [burning, flame] come from within you, and it consumed [devoured, ate] you. I reduced you to ashes [worthlessness, nothingness] on the ground [the earth, the land] in the eyes [sight, presence] of all who saw [beheld, looked upon] you. word study 19 All [the entire, every single one] the nations [peoples, Amaw] who know [are aware of, have knowledge of] you are appalled [horrified, astonished] over you. You have come to a [completely, utterly] horrible [terrifying, desolate] end [destruction, devastation] and will be [exist as] no more [nothing, nonexistent, forever gone].’” word study 20 Then the word [message from God, divine utterance] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] came [existed, came into being] to me, saying [to speak, to command, to proclaim], word study 21 “Son of man [human, descendant of Adam], set your face [presence, towards] against Sidon [an ancient city, Zidon] and prophesy [speak under divine influence, declare] against her [it, the city]. word study 22 And you are to declare that this is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Lord] GOD [Yehovah, the covenant God] says: ‘Behold [look, take notice], I am against you, O Sidon [a city on the Mediterranean coast], and I will be glorified [honored, exalted] within you. They will know [recognize, understand] that I am the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] when I execute [carry out, bring to pass] judgments [sentences, verdicts] against her and demonstrate [show, reveal] My holiness [set-apart nature, sanctity] through her. word study 23 I will send [to dispatch, to commission] a plague [pestilence, disease] against her and shed blood [the liquid of life] in her streets [outside, in public]; the slain [killed, defeated] will fall [be defeated, succumb] within her, while the sword [a cutting instrument] is against her on every side [surrounding, encompassing]. Then they will know [understand, recognize] that I am [exist as, am present as] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]. word study 24 For the people of Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen nation] will no longer face a pricking brier [a thorny plant] or a painful thorn [a source of grief, a hurting thorn] from all around them [their surrounding nations, those who despise them] who treat them with contempt [despise, scorn, or hate them]. Then they will know [have a deep understanding, perceive, and recognize] that I am the Lord GOD [Adonay, the supreme Ruler, Yehovah].’ word study 25 This is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: ‘When I gather [collect, assemble] the house [family, descendants] of Israel [the chosen people, descendants of Jacob] from the peoples [nations, Gentiles] among whom they have been scattered [dispersed, spread abroad], I will show Myself holy [set apart, consecrated] among them in the sight [presence, gaze] of the nations [Gentiles, heathen]. Then they will dwell [reside, settle] in their own land [inheritance, territory], which I have given [bestowed, granted] to My servant [attendant, worshiper] Jacob [the supplanter, Israel]. word study 26 And there they will dwell [in safety] securely, build [establish, construct] houses [homes, dwellings], and plant [cultivate, nurture] vineyards [gardens, orchards]. They will dwell [reside, abide] securely when I execute [carry out, bring to pass] judgments [sentences, verdicts] against all those around them who treat them with [hold in, show] contempt [disdain, scorn]. Then they will know [recognize, understand] that I am [exist as, am present as] the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] their God [Elohim, the one true God].’” word study
