1 So Abram [the original name of Abraham, a key figure] went up [ascended, rose] out of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa] into the Negev [the southern district, the south country]—he [as the leader] and his wife [his female partner, companion] and all [everything, every possession] his possessions—and Lot [Abraham’s nephew, a relative] was with him [together, in accompaniment]. word study 2 And Abram [a very blessed man, the original name of Abraham] had become [grown to be, was] extremely [exceedingly, very] wealthy [rich, prosperous] in livestock [cattle, herds, domestic animals] and silver [money, payment, precious metal] and gold [a valuable metal]. word study 3 From the Negev [southern district, south country] he journeyed [traveled, went on his way] from place to place toward Bethel [house of God], until he came to the place [location, region] between [in the midst of] Bethel and Ai [heap of ruins] where his tent [nomadic home, tabernacle] had formerly [at the beginning, previously] been pitched [set up, established], word study 4 to the site [place of worship, location of the altar] where he had built the altar [place of sacrifice, altar of worship]. And there [in that location, at that time] Abram [the original name of Abraham, father of faith] called on [invoked, worshiped, preached in the name of] the name [reputation, character, authority] of the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God]. word study 5 Now Lot [Abraham’s nephew, traveling companion], who was traveling [going, walking] with Abram [the original name of Abraham], also [too, even] had flocks [sheep, goats, or other livestock] and herds [cattle, domesticated animals] and tents [nomadic dwellings, temporary homes]. word study 6 But the land [the earth, a country, or territory] was unable [not having the power or strength] to support [to lift, bear, or sustain] both of them while they stayed together [in unity, as one], for they had so many [a great, abundant] possessions [property, substance, or riches] that they were unable [lacked the power or ability] to coexist [to dwell together, live in harmony]. word study 7 And there was discord [strife, quarreling] between the herdsmen [those who shepherd, care for] of Abram [the original name of Abraham, a key figure] and the herdsmen of Lot [Abraham’s nephew, meaning covering]. At that time [previously, in the past] the Canaanites [inhabitants of the land of Canaan] and the Perizzites [a Canaanite tribe, living in southern Canaan] were also living [dwelling, residing] in the land [the earth, a country]. word study 8 So Abram [the father of a multitude] said to Lot [his nephew, a close relative], “Please [I pray, if you will] let there be no contention [strife, quarrel] between you and me, or between your herdsmen [shepherds, those who care for the animals] and my herdsmen [those who tend my flocks]. After all, we are brothers [kinsmen, closely related, having a familial bond]. word study 9 Is not [certainly, absolutely] the whole [entire, all] land [earth, territory, region] before you [in your presence, in front of you]? Now separate [divide, go your separate ways] yourself from me [from my presence, from my company]. If you go [travel, move] to the left [north, to the left hand], I will go [journey, travel] to the right [south, to the right hand]; if you go [travel, move] to the right [south, to the right hand], I will go [journey, travel] to the left [north, to the left hand].” word study 10 And Lot [lifting up his eyes, gazing out] looked out and saw that the whole plain [valley, region] of the Jordan [a key location, a river], all the way to Zoar [a city near the Dead Sea], was well watered [like a garden, fertile] like the garden [a place of beauty] of the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God], like the land [territory, region] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa]. (This was before [prior to, earlier than] the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] destroyed [ruined, corrupted] Sodom [a city near the Dead Sea, known for its wickedness] and Gomorrah [a city in ancient Palestine, known for its corruption].) word study 11 So Lot [Abraham’s nephew, a relative] chose the whole plain [valley, region] of the Jordan [a key location, a river] for himself and set out [journeyed, traveled] toward the east [front, direction]. And Abram and Lot [a man, an individual] parted company [separated themselves, divided]. word study 12 Abram [the father of a multitude, originally named] lived [dwelt, remained, abode] in the land [region, territory, country] of Canaan [the promised land, a son of Ham], but Lot [meaning covering, Abraham’s nephew] settled [pitched his tent, made his home] in the cities [towns, urban areas] of the plain [valley, lowland] and pitched [set up, moved] his tent [tabernacle, dwelling place] toward [as far as, near] Sodom [a city of wickedness, near the Dead Sea]. word study 13 But the men [of great wickedness, evil] of Sodom were wicked [sinners, exceedingly corrupt], sinning [committing crimes, rebelling] greatly [very much, beyond measure] against the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God]. word study 14 After Lot [had separated from him, was parted from him] had departed, the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said to Abram [the original name of Abraham], “Now lift up [raise, elevate] your eyes from the place [location, region] where you are, and look [gaze, behold] to the north [Zaphon] and south [Negeb, the south country] and east [the front, direction of the rising sun] and west [the direction of the setting sun], word study 15 for [as a result of this promise] all the land [country, territory, or region] that you see [are looking at, have in sight], I will give [bestow, grant, or set] to you [as an individual] and your offspring [seed, descendants, or posterity] forever [always, eternally, or to the age]. word study 16 I will make your offspring [like the grains of sand, innumerable] like the dust [dry earth or mortar] of the earth [the land, the ground], so that if one could count [assign a value to, weigh out] the dust [particles of dirt] of the earth, then your offspring [seed, descendants] could be counted [numbered, enumerated]. word study 17 Get up [arise, stand up] and walk [go, travel, wander] around the land [the earth, territory, region], through its length [extent, distance] and breadth [width, expanse], for [because, since, as] I will give [bestow, grant, provide] it to you [unto thee, to thee].” word study 18 So Abram [the father of a multitude] moved his tent and went to live near the Oaks [terebinth trees] of Mamre [an Amorite ally] at Hebron [a place of alliance], where he built [established, constructed] an altar [a place of sacrifice] to the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God]. word study
