1 Then Joseph [the one Jehovah has added] fell upon [on, above, or in front of] his father’s [parental, paternal, or ancestral] face [presence, countenance], wept [cried, shed tears, mourned] over him [upon, on, or above him], and kissed [touched, showed affection, or paid respect to] him. word study 2 And Joseph [the one Jehovah has added] directed the physicians [healers, medical attendants] in his service to embalm [to spice, preserve] his father Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, representing the people of God]. So they embalmed [preserved, prepared for burial] him, word study 3 taking the forty [a significant period of time, often used for mourning or preparation] days required to complete the embalming [the process of preserving a body, to spice]. And the Egyptians [the people of Egypt] mourned [to weep, to express grief] for him seventy days. word study 4 When the days of mourning [weeping, and sorrow] had passed, Joseph [Jehovah has added] said to Pharaoh’s [the king of Egypt, a powerful leader] court, “If I have found [gained, attained] favor [graciousness, kindness] in your eyes [sight, gaze], please [I pray, kindly] tell Pharaoh [the ruler of Egypt] that word study 5 my father [the patriarch, ancestor] made me swear [take an oath, vow] an oath when he said, ‘I am about to die [pass away, depart from this life]. You must bury me in the tomb [grave, sepulchre] that I dug [prepared, excavated] for myself in the land [territory, region] of Canaan [the promised land, Israel].’ Now let me go [ascend, travel] and bury my father [honoring his memory, showing respect], and then return [come back, turn again].” word study 6 Pharaoh [the king of Egypt] replied, “Go up [ascend, rise] and bury [inter, lay to rest] your father [parent, ancestor], as he made you swear [take an oath, promise solemnly] to do [fulfill, carry out].” word study 7 Then Joseph [Jehovah has added] went to bury [inter or lay to rest] his father, and all [every single one] the servants [slaves or attendants] of Pharaoh [the king of Egypt] accompanied him—the elders [old or elderly men] of Pharaoh’s household [family or royal court] and all [every] the elders [respected leaders] of the land [country or territory] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa]word study 8 along with all [every single member] of Joseph’s household [family, relatives], and his brothers [male siblings, close relatives], and his father’s household [ancestral family, clan]. Only their children [little ones, infants] and flocks [sheep, goats] and herds [cattle, livestock] were left in Goshen [the region of Egypt, a place of refuge]. word study 9 Chariots [vehicles, teams of horses, or cavalry] and horsemen [cavalry soldiers] alike [also, even] went up [ascended, rose] with him, and it was an exceedingly [very, greatly] large [heavy, severe] procession [camp, army, company]. word study 10 When they reached the threshing floor [a place of grain separation, like a harvest site] of Atad [a location near a thorny plant, a buckthorn tree], which is across [beyond, on the other side of] the Jordan [the river running from Lebanon to the Dead Sea], they lamented [mourned with a great and very sore lamentation] and wailed loudly [with a very great and severe cry], and Joseph mourned [held a mourning ceremony, lamented deeply] for his father [his male parent, ancestor] seven days. word study 11 When the Canaanites [inhabitants of the land, the people of Canaan] of the land saw the mourning [a solemn ceremony of grieving, a grievous mourning] at the threshing floor [a place of grain separation, an open area] of Atad [a location of brambles, a thorny plant], they said, “This is a solemn [heavy, severe] ceremony of mourning [an act of grieving, lamenting] by the Egyptians [the people from the country of Egypt].” Thus [so, in this manner] the place across [beyond, on the other side of] the Jordan [the river running from Lebanon to the Dead Sea] is called Abel-mizraim [a place in Palestine, meadow of Egypt, the mourning of the Egyptians]. word study 12 So Jacob’s sons [his descendants, children] did as he had [previously] charged them [given orders to, commanded]. word study 13 They carried him to the land [a promised territory] of Canaan and buried him in the cave [a hollow rock, a burial site] at Machpelah [a place of burial, a double cave] in the field [a flat area, a possession] near Mamre, which Abraham [the father of faith] had purchased [acquired, bought] from Ephron [a Hittite, a Canaanite] the Hittite [a descendant of Heth] as a burial site [a grave, a sepulchre, a place of rest]. word study 14 After Joseph [Jehovah has added, a name given to several Israelites] had buried [to inter or lay to rest, often in a grave or tomb] his father [a male parent, or one who is regarded as a father], he returned [to turn back, or go back to a place] to Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa] with his brothers [male siblings, or close relatives] and all [everything, the entire group] who had gone [to ascend, or go up] with him to bury [to inter or lay to rest] his father. word study 15 When Joseph’s brothers [male siblings, close relatives] saw that their father [abba, paternal figure] was dead [had passed away, ceased to exist], they said, “What if [perhaps, it may be] Joseph [Jehovah has added] bears a grudge [hates, holds a long-standing resentment]? Then he will surely [certainly, without a doubt] repay us [require, make restitution] for all [every, the entirety of] the evil [bad, morally wrong] that we did [committed, perpetrated] to him [against, towards].” word study 16 So they sent word [a message, a messenger] to Joseph, saying [to tell, to command], “Before he died [passed away, met his end], your father [abba, paternal ancestor] commanded [gave orders, instructed] [before his death, as he was dying], word study 17 ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph [the one God has added]: I beg you, please [with utmost respect and humility] forgive the transgression [rebellion, revolt against God or others] and sin [guilt, punishment for wrongdoing] of your brothers [male siblings, close relatives], for they did you wrong [treated you evilly, with malice].’ So now [at this time, in this moment], Joseph, please [I pray, with polite request] forgive the transgression [offense, fault] of the servants [those who serve, attend] of the God [Elohim, the supreme deity] of your father [parent, ancestor].” When their message came to him, Joseph wept [cried, shed tears]. word study 18 His brothers [male siblings, relatives] also came to him, bowed down [fell prostrate, worshipped] before him, and said, “We are [behold] your slaves [servants, bondmen]!” word study 19 But Joseph replied, “Do not [be fearful, have no fear] be afraid [fear not, let not fear grip you]. Am I [can I, do I have the authority] in the place [position, role, under the authority] of God [Elohim, the supreme Judge]? word study 20 As for you, what you [devised, planned] intended against me for [moral or natural] evil, God [Elohim, the supreme God] intended for [spiritual or moral] good, in order to accomplish a day [a period of time, a season] like this—to preserve the lives [to keep alive, to sustain] of many [a large number, numerous] people [a nation, a group of individuals]. word study 21 Therefore [do not be anxious, fear not] do not be afraid [have no fear, do not be frightened]. I [as your provider, the one who sustains] will provide [nourish, take care of] for you and your little ones [children, infants].” So Joseph [with kindness and compassion] reassured [comforted, spoke kindly to] his brothers and spoke [communicated, uttered words of comfort] kindly [gently, with a soothing voice] to them. word study 22 Now Joseph [the one Jehovah has added] and his father’s [paternal, ancestral] household [family, descendants] remained [dwelt, stayed] in Egypt [the land of the Nile, a country in northeastern Africa], and Joseph lived [experienced life, had existence] to the age [period, span] of 110 [a hundred and ten, a full span of years]. word study 23 He saw [looked after, provided for] Ephraim’s sons [descendants, children] to the third [great-grandchild] generation, and indeed [also, even] the sons [children, descendants] of Machir [a Manassite leader] son of Manasseh [a grandson of Jacob] were brought up [born, given birth] on Joseph’s [Jehovah has added] knees. word study 24 Then Joseph [the son of Jacob, Jehovah has added] said to his brothers, “I [the speaker, a personal reference] am about to die [to pass away, meet my end], but God [Elohim, the supreme God] will surely visit [to oversee, reckon with] you and bring you up [to ascend, go up] from this land [the current territory, Egypt] to the land [the promised territory, Canaan] He promised [swore an oath, made a vow] on oath [a solemn promise, a binding agreement] to Abraham [the father of faith, a key figure], Isaac [the son of promise, a man of faith], and Jacob [the one who wrestled with God, a transformed man].” word study 25 And Joseph [the one God has added] made the sons of Israel [the descendants of Jacob] take an oath [a solemn promise, a vow] and said, “God [Elohim, the supreme One] will surely [certainly, without fail] attend to [visit, oversee, reckon with] you, and then you must carry my bones [my body, my remains] up from this place [from here, out of Egypt].” word study 26 So Joseph [the son of Jacob, Jehovah has added] died at the age of 110 [a hundred and ten years old, one hundred ten years]. And they embalmed [spiced, preserved] his body and placed [put, set] it in a coffin [ark, chest] in Egypt [the land of the Egyptians, a country in northeastern Africa]. word study
