Hebrews 3

BSA

1 Therefore, holy [set apart, sanctified] brothers [fellow believers], who share in the heavenly [from above] calling [invitation to salvation], set your focus on Jesus [God’s messenger, the Christ], the apostle [delegate, messenger of God] and high priest [chief priest] whom we confess [acknowledge, profess]. word study 2 He was [stedfast, trustworthy] faithful to the One [who made him, appointed Him] who appointed Him, just as Moses [the Hebrew lawgiver] was faithful [in all things, trustworthy] in all God’s [divine, heavenly] house [home, dwelling place]. word study 3 For Jesus [the Messiah, our Savior] has been counted worthy [deemed deserving, considered fit] of greater [more abundant, surpassing] glory [honor, praise, divine esteem] than Moses [the lawgiver, leader of Israel], just as [in the same way, similarly] the builder [architect, creator] of a house [dwelling, temple] has greater [more excellent, superior] honor [respect, esteem, value] than the house [building, structure] itself. word study 4 And every house [physical dwelling, home] is built [constructed, prepared] by someone [a person, one], but God [the Creator, Supreme Being] is the builder [One who constructs, prepares] of everything [all things, the universe]. word study 5 Now Moses [the Hebrew lawgiver] was faithful [trustworthy, dependable] as a servant [a humble attendant] in all [the entirety of] God’s house [the household of faith], testifying [providing evidence] to what [the things that] would be spoken [uttered] later [afterward, in the future]. word study 6 But Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah] is faithful as the Son [a child or descendant] over God’s house [a physical dwelling or family]. And we are His house [a family or household of faith], if we hold firmly [to possess or have] to our confidence [boldness or freedom in speaking] and the hope [expectation or trust] of which we boast [a pride or glory] [firmly established, stable]. word study 7 Therefore [for this reason, as a consequence], as the Holy Spirit [the divine Breath] says: “Today [at this present time], if [in case] you hear [listen and obey] His voice [sound, noise], word study 8 do not [refuse to obey, become stubborn] harden [make unyielding, stubbornly resistant] your hearts [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions], as you did [in a state of rebellion, with a hard-hearted attitude] in the rebellion [provocation, irritation], in the day [a 24-hour period, a period of testing] of testing [temptation, trial] in the wilderness [a deserted, uninhabited place, the desert], word study 9 where your fathers tested [tested My patience, tempted] and tried Me [probed My character, proved], and for forty [a period of testing, four decades] years saw [perceived, experienced] My works [deeds, mighty acts]. word study 10 Therefore [as a consequence, for this reason] I was angry [grieved, displeased] with that [specific, particular] generation [group of people, those living at the same time], and I said, ‘Their hearts [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions] are always [continually, forever] going astray [erring, leading astray], and they have not known [understood, recognized] My ways [path, road, divine plan].’ word study 11 So I swore [in my frustration, with an oath] on oath in My [divine] anger [wrath, strong displeasure], ‘They shall never [not at all, if they enter] enter [come into, experience] My [promised] rest [repose, cessation from labor].’” word study 12 See to it [take heed, beware], brothers [fellow believers, brethren], that none of you has a wicked [evil, bad] heart [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions] of unbelief [a lack of faith, disobedience] that turns away [to depart, falling away] from the living [all-powerful, life-giving] God [the one true deity]. word study 13 But exhort [encourage, plead with] one another daily [every day, day by day], as long as it is called [known as, referred to as] today [this present time], so that none of you may be hardened [made stubborn, become unyielding] by sin’s [missing the mark, falling short] deceitfulness [deceit, delusion]. word study 14 We have come to share [become partakers, partners] in Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah] if we hold [keep, possess] firmly [steadfastly, securely] to the end [goal, conclusion] the assurance [confidence, faith] we had at first [from the beginning, initially]. word study 15 As it has been said [in Scripture, from the past]: “Today [at this present moment, now], if you hear [listen to, obey] His voice [the sound of God, divine message], do not harden [make stubborn, unyielding] your hearts [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions], as you did [in a past time, previously] in the rebellion [provocation, time of anger].” word study 16 For who [certain ones, some individuals] were the ones who heard [listened and understood, to perceive with the ear] and rebelled [provoke to anger, embittered]? Were they not [but not, on the contrary] all [every single one, the whole group] those Moses [the Hebrew lawgiver] led out [came out from, departed] of Egypt [a place of bondage]? word study 17 And with whom [those who disobeyed] was God [the Almighty, offended] angry [grieved, displeased] for forty [a period of testing] years? Was it not with those who [intentionally] sinned [missed the mark, rebelled], whose bodies [physical corpses] fell [collapsed, perished] in the wilderness [a deserted, barren land]? word study 18 And to whom did He swear [take an oath, make a solemn promise] that they would never [at no time, under no circumstances] enter [go into, experience] His rest [a state of peace, a place of spiritual refreshment]? Was it not to those who disobeyed [refused to obey, were disobedient]? word study 19 So we see [perceive, understand] that it was because of their [lack of trust, disobedience] unbelief [faithlessness] that they were unable [powerless, lacked the capability] to enter [go into, become part of]. word study
