BSA

1 When Jeremiah [the prophet, whom Jehovah has appointed] had finished telling all the people [the nation] all the words [messages, declarations] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] their God [Elohim, the one supreme God]—everything [all things, the entirety] that the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] had sent [dispatched, commissioned] him to say [speak, proclaim, communicate]word study 2 Azariah [the son of God’s salvation] son of Hoshaiah, Johanan [Jehovah has graced] son of Kareah, and all the arrogant [proud, insolent] men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying [speaking falsehood, deceiving]! The LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] our God [Elohim, the supreme Judge] has not sent [appointed, commissioned] you to say, ‘You must not [shall not, cannot] go to Egypt [the land of the Nile] to reside [to sojourn, to dwell temporarily] there [in that place, at that time].’ word study 3 Rather, Baruch [the son of Neriah, a friend of Jeremiah] son of Neriah is inciting [urging, stirring up] you against us to deliver [give, hand over] us into the hands [power, control] of the Chaldeans [the people of Chaldea, a region in Mesopotamia], so that they may put us to death [kill, destroy] or exile [remove, carry away captive] us to Babylon [the city of confusion, a place of captivity]!” word study 4 So Johanan [a leader of the Israelites] son of Kareah and all [every single one] the commanders [rulers, captains] of the forces [army, military might] disobeyed [did not obey, refused to hear] the command [voice, word] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] to stay [dwell, remain] in the land [region, territory] of Judah [the tribe of Judah, the southern kingdom]. word study 5 Instead, Johanan [a leader of the people] son of Kareah and all the commanders [captains, rulers] of the forces took the whole remnant [those who remained, the survivors] of Judah, those who had returned [come back, turned back] to the land of Judah from all the nations [Gentile countries, foreign lands] to which they had been scattered [driven, banished, expelled], word study 6 the men [strong and able], the women [wives, females], the children [little ones, young], the king’s daughters [royal princesses], and everyone [all people, every person] whom Nebuzaradan [the captain of the guard, chief steward] captain of the guard had allowed [left, permitted] to remain [stay, dwell] with Gedaliah [the governor] son of Ahikam [son of Shaphan, a leader], the son of Shaphan [a scribe, rock badger], as well as Jeremiah [whom Jehovah has appointed, a prophet] the prophet [one who speaks for God] and Baruch [blessed] son of Neriah [father of Seraiah]. word study 7 So they entered [came into, went as far as] the land [country, territory] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa] because they did not obey [refused to hear, disobeyed] the voice [sound, command] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God], and they went [traveled, journeyed] as far as [until, unto] Tahpanhes [a city in Egypt, filled with pity]. word study 8 Then the word [message from God, divine utterance] of the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] came [was revealed, spoke to] to Jeremiah [whom God has appointed, a prophet] at [in the city of] Tahpanhes [a place of pity, an Egyptian city]: word study 9 “In the sight [before the eyes, in full view] of the Jews [men of Judah, people from the tribe of Judah], pick up [take in your hand] some large [great, significant] stones [rocks, weights] and bury [hide, conceal] them in the clay [mortar, cement] of the brick [brickwork] pavement at the entrance [doorway, gate] to Pharaoh’s [the king of Egypt, ruler] palace [house, dwelling place] at Tahpanhes [a city in Egypt, filled with pity]. word study 10 Then tell them that this is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] of Hosts [armies, a large group of people or things], the God [Elohim, the one supreme God] of Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, referring to his descendants], says: ‘I will send [to dispatch, to commission] for My servant [one who serves, a bondservant] Nebuchadnezzar [a powerful king of Babylon] king of Babylon [a city and empire, meaning confusion or mixing], and I will set [to put, to place] his throne [a seat of power or authority] over these stones [a rock, a weight, or a precious gem] that I have embedded [hidden, concealed], and he will spread [to stretch, to extend] his royal pavilion [a splendid canopy, a luxurious covering] over them. word study 11 He will come [and approach, draw near] and strike down [smite, attack] the land [earth, territory] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa], bringing death [to die, perish] to those destined [appointed, ordained] for death [physical or spiritual], captivity [imprisonment, exile] to those destined [appointed, ordained] for captivity [being taken away], and the sword [a cutting instrument, war] to those destined [appointed, ordained] for the sword [killed by the sword, violent death]. word study 12 I will kindle [start, ignite] a fire [burning, flame] in the temples [places of worship, houses of the gods] of the gods [Elohim, divine beings] of Egypt, and Nebuchadnezzar will burn [set on fire, destroy] those temples and take their gods as captives [prisoners of war, spoils of battle]. So he will wrap [enwrap, cover] himself with the land of Egypt [the country, its people and resources] as a shepherd [one who cares for and tends] wraps himself in his garment [cloak, clothing], and he will depart [go out, come forth] from there [that place, Egypt] unscathed [in peace, safely]. word study 13 He will demolish [break, shatter] the sacred pillars [monuments, memorials] of the temple [house, dwelling place] of the sun [Heliopolis, sun-temple] in the land [country, territory] of Egypt, and he will burn down [set on fire, kindle flames] the temples [houses, places of worship] of the gods [Elohim, divine beings] of Egypt [the Egyptian nation, people].’” word study
