1 At this time [then, in that moment] a man [one, a certain person] named Lazarus was sick [weak, feeble]. He lived in Bethany [a village near Jerusalem], the village [a small town] of Mary [Jesus’ friend and follower] and her sister [biological sister] Martha [a Christian woman and friend of Jesus]. word study 2 (Mary [the one who anointed the Lord], whose brother [a male sibling or fellow believer] Lazarus [a friend of Jesus] was sick [weak or feeble, in a state of physical or moral frailty], was to anoint [apply perfumed oil to, showing respect and honor] the Lord [the supreme Master, God] with perfume [fragrant oil] and wipe His feet [a symbol of humility and service] with her hair [a sign of devotion and reverence].) word study 3 So the sisters [biological sisters, believers in the Christian faith community] sent word to Jesus, “Lord [Master, God, the One in authority], the one You love [the One you have a strong affection for] [have great affection for, care deeply about] is sick [weak, feeble, in a state of physical or moral weakness].” word study 4 When Jesus [the Son of God, God’s salvation] heard this, He said, “This sickness [weakness, frailty] will not end in death [physical or spiritual] [but rather]. No, it is for the glory [honor, praise] of God [the one true deity], so that the Son [Child, heir] of God [the Father, Creator] may be glorified [praised, honored] through [because of, by means of] it [this situation, event].” word study 5 Now Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] loved [showing esteem and goodwill towards] Martha [a Christian woman and friend of Jesus] and her sister [a biological sister, Mary] and Lazarus [a friend of Jesus, raised from the dead]. word study 6 So on hearing [when he had heard, therefore] that Lazarus [his dear friend] was sick [weak, feeble], He stayed [remained] where He was [in the same place] for two days [a period of time], word study 7 and then [after that, thereafter] He said [to speak, to share teachings] to the disciples [learners, pupils, followers], “Let us go [to lead, to bring] back [again, once more] to Judea [a region in southern Palestine, the land of the Jews].” word study 8 “Rabbi [my master, a title of respect],” they replied, “the Jews [people from Judah, the Jewish community] just tried [sought, attempted] to stone [punish by throwing stones] You, and You are going [to depart, to go back] back there [to that place, again]?” word study 9 Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] answered, “Are there not twelve [a dozen, a complete number] hours of daylight [the time of day when the sun is visible]? If anyone walks [lives, follows a path] in the daytime [the period of light, when the sun is shining], he will not stumble [trip, fall], because he sees [perceives, understands] by the light [the source of illumination, the divine guidance] of this world [the earthly realm, the cosmos]. word study 10 But if anyone [a person, someone] walks [lives, follows a path] at night [in darkness, without spiritual light], he will stumble [trip, fall spiritually], because he has no [none, lacks] light [spiritual understanding, illumination].” word study 11 After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend [beloved companion] Lazarus has fallen asleep [is at rest, sleeping in death], but I am going there [to the place of his rest] to wake him up [to arouse him from the sleep of death, to bring him back to life].” word study 12 His disciples [the learners, followers] replied, “Lord [Master, God], if [under the condition] he is sleeping [fallen asleep, resting], he will get better [recover, be saved, do well].” word study 13 They thought that Jesus [the Messiah, God’s salvation] was talking about actual [natural, physical] sleep [rest, repose], but He was speaking about [referring to, concerning] the death [separation from life, physical end] of Lazarus [the one Jesus loved, a close friend]. word study 14 So Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] told them [to the disciples, plainly and clearly] plainly [with boldness and freedom in speaking], “Lazarus [the friend of Jesus who was raised from the dead] is [has stopped living, to die] dead [has passed away, ceased to live], word study 15 and for your sake [because of you, on your account] I am glad [rejoice, feel happy] I was not there [in that place, at that time], so that you may believe [trust, have faith]. But let us go [lead the way, proceed] to him [Jesus, the one we are discussing].” word study 16 Then Thomas [the Twin, Didymus] called Didymus said to his fellow disciples [companions in learning, sygmathetai], “Let us also go [accompany Him, be with Him], so that we may die [stop living, pass away, apothanomen] with [in the company of, met’] Him [Jesus, the Master].” word study 17 When Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] arrived, He found that Lazarus had already [even now, previously] spent four [the number four] days [a 24-hour period] in the tomb [a place of remembrance or interment, grave]. word study 18 Now Bethany [a village near Jerusalem, about two miles away] was near [close to, adjacent to] Jerusalem [the capital of Palestine], a little less than [approximately, about] two miles [fifteen furlongs, fifteen stadia] away [at a distance, from the city], word study 19 and many [a large number, a multitude] of the Jews [people from Judah, Jewish descendants] had come [to arrive, to gather] to Martha [a Christian woman, a friend of Jesus] and Mary [the sister of Martha and Lazarus] to console [to comfort, to encourage] them in the loss [the death, the bereavement] of their brother [a male sibling, a fellow believer]. word study 20 So when Martha [the sister of Mary and Lazarus] heard that Jesus [the Messiah, God’s salvation] was coming [on His way, approaching], she went out [to greet] to meet Him; but Mary [the one who sat at Jesus’ feet] stayed [remained, sat still] at home [in the house, in their dwelling]. word study 21 Martha said [to address, speak to] to Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation], “Lord [master, God], if [a condition] You had been [present] here [in this place, location], my brother [a male sibling, fellow Christian] would not [ouk, absolutely not] have died [to die, be dead, spiritually or physically]. word study 22 But [in contrast to what has been said] even now [at this present moment, in the current situation] I know [am aware, have spiritual insight] that God [the one true deity, Creator of all] will give [bestow, grant] You whatever [all things, everything] You ask [request, petition] of Him [the Father, Almighty God].” word study 23 “Your [belonging to you] brother [male sibling or fellow Christian] will rise again [come to life again, become alive again],” Jesus told her. word study 24 Martha replied [said to him], “I know [am certain, have spiritual awareness] that he will rise again [come to life, be resurrected] in the resurrection [standing up again from death, a raising from the dead] at the last [final, most distant] day [a 24-hour period, a period of time].” word study 25 Jesus [the Son of God, Joshua] said to her, “I [the speaker Himself] am the resurrection [a standing up again from death] and the life [physical and spiritual existence]. Whoever believes in Me [the Messiah] will live [have life], even though he dies [passes away]. word study 26 And everyone [all who exist, whosoever] who lives [has spiritual life, is living] and believes [trusts, has faith] in Me [in my person, my teachings] will never [not to the age, shall not] die [experience spiritual death, perish]. Do you believe [have faith, trust] this [this truth, this statement]?” word study 27 “Yes, Lord [Master, God],” she answered, “I believe [have faith, trust] that You are the Christ [Messiah, Anointed One], the Son [Child, Offspring] of God [the Father, Creator], who was to come [arrive, appear] into the world [humanity, creation].” word study 28 After Martha had said this [these things, her words], she went back and called her sister Mary [secretly, in private] aside to tell her, “The Teacher [Master, Instructor] is here [present, nearby] and is asking [calling] for you [personally, to see you].” word study 29 And when Mary [as soon as she] heard [with understanding and obedience] this, she got up [arose, stood up] quickly [without delay, swiftly] and went [came, came unto] to Him [towards, with Jesus]. word study 30 Now Jesus [the Messiah, God’s salvation] had not yet [at this point in time] entered [come into, arrived at] the village [a small town, rural area], but was still [remaining, waiting] at the place [location, specific spot] where Martha [a faithful disciple, friend of Jesus] had met [gone to meet, encountered] Him. word study 31 When the Jews [from the tribe of Judah, Jewish people] who were in the house [home, dwelling place] consoling [comforting, encouraging] Mary saw how quickly [hastily, without delay] she got up and went out, they followed [accompanied, went after] her, supposing [thinking, assuming] she was going [departing, on her way] to the tomb [grave, place of burial] to mourn [weep, lament] there [in that place]. word study 32 When Mary [the sister of Martha and Lazarus] came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell [prostrated herself, collapsed] at His feet and said, “Lord [Master, Savior], if You had been here [present with us, in our midst], my brother [male sibling, fellow believer] would not have died [passed away, ceased to live].” word study 33 When Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] saw her weeping [crying out loud, mourning], and the Jews [people from Judah, of Jewish descent] who had come with her also weeping [lamenting, grieving], He was deeply moved [troubled, stirred up] in spirit [the vital principle, mental disposition] and [experiencing inner turmoil, being] troubled [disturbed, upset]. word study 34 “Where [in what location, at what place] have you put [laid, placed, buried] him?” He asked [said, spoke]. “Come [approach, draw near] and see [look, behold], Lord [Master, God],” they answered [said, replied]. word study 35 Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] wept [shed tears, cried out in sorrow, began to cry]. word study 36 Then [at that moment, therefore] the Jews [people from Judah, Jewish descendants] said, “See [behold, look!] how [in what manner, to what extent] He [Jesus, the Messiah] loved [had strong affection for, cherished] him [Lazarus, the one He cared for]!” word study 37 But some of them asked, “Could not this man [demonstrating divine power] who opened the eyes [giving sight to the physically and spiritually blind] of the blind [those lacking spiritual understanding] also have kept [preserved, protected] Lazarus [this specific man, a friend of Jesus] from dying [experiencing physical death, separation from life]?” word study 38 Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation], once again [as before, a second time] deeply moved [groaning in himself, troubled], came to the tomb [grave, place of interment]. It was a cave [a hole in the rock, a hiding place] with a stone [a literal rock, a barrier] laid [placed, positioned] across the entrance [the opening, the way in]. word study 39 “Take away [remove, lift up] the stone [a literal rock or a figurative stumbling block],” Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] said. “Lord [God, Master, one in authority], by now he stinks [is decaying, smells bad],” said Martha [a Christian woman, a biological sister], the sister [a sister in the Christian faith community] of the dead [one who has died or is spiritually dead] man. “It has already [even now] been four [related to the fourth day] days [a period of time, for this reason].” word study 40 Jesus replied [said to her], “Did I not tell [say unto] you that if you believed [had faith, trusted], you would see [perceive, experience] the glory [honor, praise] of God [the one true deity]?” word study 41 So they took away [removed, lifted up] the stone [a literal rock, a figurative obstacle]. Then Jesus lifted [raised, directed] His eyes [His vision, His gaze] upward [to heaven, above] and said, “Father [the male parent, the divine Creator], I thank [express gratitude, praise] You that [because, since] You have heard [listened to, understood] Me [Jesus, the Son of God]. word study 42 I knew [was certain, had confidence] that You always [at all times, constantly] hear Me, but I say this [declare openly, speak aloud] for the benefit [on behalf, for the sake] of the people [crowd, multitude] standing here, so they may believe [trust, have faith] that You sent [appointed, dispatched] Me [as Your representative, on a mission].” word study 43 After Jesus had said [spoken, uttered] this, He called out [cried, shouted] in a loud [great, intense] voice, “Lazarus [the one he loved, his friend], come [approach, draw near] out [forth, from the tomb]!” word study 44 The man [who had been deceased, lifeless] who had been dead [spiritually and physically, without life] came out [emerged, was raised] with his hands [instruments of action, service] and feet [means of movement, journey] bound [tied, restricted] in strips of linen [graveclothes, burial wrappings], and his face [countenance, appearance] wrapped [covered, concealed] in a cloth [sudarium, handkerchief]. “Unwrap [loose, set free] him and let him go [release, allow to depart],” Jesus [the Savior, Redeemer] told them [instructed, commanded]. word study 45 Therefore [as a result, then] many [a large number, a multitude] of the Jews [people from Judah, Israelites] who had come [to visit, to comfort] to Mary [the sister of Martha and Lazarus], and had seen [beheld, witnessed] what Jesus [the Messiah, the Savior] did [performed, accomplished], believed [trusted, had faith] in Him [the Son of God, the Redeemer]. word study 46 But some [certain ones, a few] of them went [away, departed] to the Pharisees [a Jewish sect, strict religious leaders] and told [reported, informed] them what Jesus [the Savior, God’s Son] had done [accomplished, performed]. word study 47 Then [at that time, therefore] the chief priests [high-priest, top Jewish leaders] and Pharisees [a Jewish sect following strict rules] convened [gathered, assembled] the Sanhedrin [a Jewish council, the ruling council] and said, “What are we to do [how should we act, what shall we do]? This man [Jesus, the human being] is performing [doing, working] many [a large number, numerous] signs [miracles, supernatural tokens]. word study 48 If we let Him [continue in this manner] go on like this, everyone [all men, the whole nation] will believe in Him [have faith, trust in Him], and then the Romans [the Roman authorities, rulers] will come [arrive, take action] and take away [remove, destroy] both our place [our position, our temple] and our nation [our people, our heritage].” word study 49 But one [a certain individual] of them, named Caiaphas [the high priest that year], who was high priest [chief spiritual leader] that year, said to them, “You [as a group, collectively] know [perceive, understand] nothing [none, no truth] at all [completely, utterly]! word study 50 You do not realize [nor consider, nor take account] that it is better [expedient, profitable] for you that one man [a human, an individual] die [to stop living, pass away] for the people [a group, a nation] than that the whole [all, entire] nation [a people, a Gentile group] perish [be destroyed, lost completely].” word study 51 Caiaphas did not say this [on his own initiative, of himself] on his own. Instead, as [chief priest] high priest that year, he was [speaking as a prophet] prophesying that Jesus [the Messiah, God’s Anointed] would die [give His life, sacrifice Himself] for the nation [the Jewish people, the Gentiles], word study 52 and not only [exclusively] for the nation [Gentiles, non-Jewish people], but also [in addition] for the scattered [dispersed, spread abroad] children [born of God, believers] of God [the one true deity], to gather [bring together, unite] them together into [toward, in the direction of] one [a unified whole, a single entity]. word study 53 So from [that specific point in time, away from] that day [the day of the event] on [thereafter, from then forward] they [the Jewish leaders, together] plotted [took counsel, consulted] to kill [destroy, put to death] Him [Jesus] [in order to, with the purpose of]. word study 54 As a result [therefore, then], Jesus no longer [not anymore] went about publicly [openly, with boldness] among the Jews [people of Judah], but He withdrew [went away] to a town [city] called Ephraim [a place near Jerusalem] in an area [country] near [close to] the wilderness [desert]. And He stayed [remained] there [in that place] with [accompanied by] the disciples [learners, pupils]. word study 55 Now the Jewish [of Judah, Israelite] Passover [commemorating the Israelites’ escape from slavery] was near [at hand, approaching], and many people went up [ascended, traveled] from the country [region, rural area] to Jerusalem [the capital of Palestine] to purify [make clean, cleanse] themselves [their minds, bodies] before [prior to, in preparation for] the Passover [festival, celebration]. word study 56 They kept looking [seeking, searching] for Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] and asking [discussing, inquiring] one another [each other, mutually] as they stood [were standing, in an upright position] in the temple [sacred place, house of worship] courts, “What do you think [suppose, have an opinion]? Will He come [appear, arrive] to the feast [festival, celebration] at all [entirely, completely]?” word study 57 But the chief priests [high-priest, Jewish leaders] and Pharisees [a strict Jewish sect] had given orders [a commandment, instruction] that anyone who knew [was aware of, had knowledge of] where He was [His location, whereabouts] must report it [disclose, reveal], so that they could arrest [seize, take into custody] Him. word study
