John 17

1 When Jesus [the Son of God, the Messiah] had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes [with reverence and devotion] to heaven [the spiritual realm, the dwelling place of God] and said, “Father [the Creator, the Almighty], the hour [the appointed time, the moment of glory] has come. Glorify [exalt, honor, and praise] Your Son, that Your Son [the Messiah, the Redeemer] may glorify [reflect and honor] You [the Father, the source of all glory]. word study 2 For You granted Him [absolute, supreme] authority [power to act, freedom to exercise] over all [every, entire] people [flesh, humanity], so that He may give [bestow, impart] eternal [lasting forever, age-during] life [spiritual existence, divine nature] to all those [as many as, everyone] You have given [entrusted, committed] Him. word study 3 Now this [eternal, age-lasting] is eternal [forever, without end] life, that they may know [understand, recognize] You, the only [alone, unique] true [authentic, genuine] God [the supreme Deity], and Jesus Christ [the Messiah, the Anointed One], whom [the one] You have sent [dispatched, commissioned]. word study 4 I [the speaker] have glorified [given praise and honor to] You [the Father] on [upon, to] earth [the world] by accomplishing [completing, finishing] the work [task or deed] You gave [bestowed upon] Me to do [to make or perform]. word study 5 And now [at this present moment], Father [the heavenly Parent], glorify [honor, praise, and exalt] Me in Your presence [before Your face, in Your sight] with the glory [divine honor, splendor, and majesty] I had [possessed, enjoyed] with You before [prior to, preceding] the world [the cosmos, creation] existed [came into being, was formed]. word study 6 I have revealed [made known, manifested] Your name [character, authority] to those You have given [bestowed, granted] Me out of [from among] the world [the earthly realm, human society]. They were Yours [belonging to You, in Your possession]; You gave [entrusted, bestowed] them to Me, and they have kept [obeyed, observed] Your word [message, command, Logos]. word study 7 Now [at this present time, in this current situation] they know [have come to understand, recognize] that everything [all things, whatsoever] You have given [bestowed, granted] Me [to me, as a gift] comes [originates, is derived] from [out of, beside] You [from Your presence, Your nature]. word study 8 For I have given them the words [declarations, utterances] You gave Me, and they have received [accepted, taken to heart] them. They knew [understood, recognized] with certainty [truly, surely] that I came [came out, went forth] from You, and they believed [trusted, had faith] that You sent [dispatched, appointed] Me. word study 9 I ask [pray, request] on their behalf [for their sake, in their interest]. I do not ask [pray, request] on behalf [for the sake] of the world [mankind, earthly realm], but on behalf [for the sake] of those [people, disciples] You have given [entrusted, bestowed] Me; for they are [belong to] Yours [possessions, loved ones]. word study 10 All I have [everything that belongs to me] is Yours [as my Father and God], and all You have [all Your possessions and attributes] is Mine [as my inheritance and gift]; and in them [through their faith and obedience] I have been glorified [exalted and honored, given praise and recognition]. word study 11 I will no longer [not any more] be in the world [the earthly realm], but they are in the world [among its inhabitants], and I am coming to You [toward Your presence]. Holy [set apart, sanctified] Father [the male parent, divine source], protect them by Your name [the authority and character You possess], the name [identity, reputation] You gave Me, so that they may be one [unified, in harmony] as We are one [united, in perfect agreement]. word study 12 While I was with them [in the world, among them], I protected [kept, watched over] and preserved [guarded, kept safe] them by Your name [Your authority], the name [Your character, reputation] You gave Me. Not one of them has been lost [destroyed, perished], except the son [child] of destruction [perdition, eternal loss], so that the Scripture [the written Word, prophecy] would be fulfilled [completed, made full]. word study 13 But now [at this present time] I am coming [returning, going back] to You; and I am saying [speaking, declaring] these things [words, teachings] while I am in [among, within] the world [the earthly realm, human society], so that they may have [possess, experience] My joy [deep happiness, divine delight] fulfilled [completed, made full] within [in the midst of, inside] them. word study 14 I [as the Messiah, the Son of God] have given them Your word [the message of salvation, the divine Logos] and the world [the system of humanity opposed to God] has hated them; for they are not of the world [do not belong to the earthly realm, are not part of the sinful system], just as I am not of the world [do not belong to the earthly realm, am not part of the sinful system]. word study 15 I am not asking [completely refusing to request] that You take them out of the world [from the earthly realm, out of this earthly life], but that You keep them [protect, watch over, and preserve] from the evil one [the wicked, Satan, the adversary]. word study 16 They are not [completely separated from] of the world [the system of human society opposed to God], just as [in the same way, similarly] I am not [do not belong to, am not part of] of the world [the earthly realm, the cosmos]. word study 17 Sanctify [make holy, set apart] them by the truth [reality, divine truth]; Your word [Logos, divine message] is truth [absolute reality, faithfulness]. word study 18 As [just as, in the same manner] You sent [dispatched, commissioned] Me into [toward, into the midst of] the world [the earthly realm, human society], I have also sent [appointed, entrusted] them into [toward, into the midst of] the world [the earthly realm, human society]. word study 19 For them [on their behalf, for their sake] I sanctify [set apart, make holy] Myself [my own person, my entire being], so that they too [also, in the same way] may be sanctified [made holy, set apart] by the truth [reality, divine truth]. word study 20 I am not asking [completely denying, utterly refusing] on behalf of them alone [exclusively, only them], but also [in addition, furthermore] on behalf of those who will believe [trust, have faith] in Me [emphatically, personally] through [by means of, because of] their message [word, testimony, logos], word study 21 that all [every single one] of them may be one [united, in harmony], as You, Father [the supreme Parent], are in Me, and I am in You [in a state of perfect unity]. May they also be in Us [in a state of spiritual oneness], so that the world [the cosmos, all humanity] may believe [have faith, trust] that You sent [dispatched, commissioned] Me. word study 22 I [as the Son of God] have given them the glory [divine honor, praise] You gave Me, so that they may be one [united in spirit, harmonious] as We [the Father and I] are one [in perfect unity, of the same essence]— word study 23 I [living in them, united with them] in them and You [dwelling in me, in perfect harmony] in Me—that they may be [made complete, perfected] perfectly united [into one, in complete harmony], so that the world [of unbelievers, the earthly realm] may know [recognize, understand] that You sent [dispatched, commissioned] Me and have loved [shown esteem and goodwill towards] them just as [with the same love and devotion] You have loved [shown affection and care for] Me. word study 24 Father [the heavenly Parent], I want those You have given [bestowed, entrusted] Me to be with Me where I am [in heaven, in My presence], that they may see [behold, experience] the glory [honor, divine splendor] You gave Me because You loved [esteemed, had affection for] Me before [prior to, preceding] the foundation [creation, beginning] of the world [the universe, human history]. word study 25 Righteous [just, fair, and innocent] Father [a male parent], although the world [an orderly arrangement or decoration] has not known [recognized or perceived] You, I know [have understanding of] You, and they know [are aware] that You sent [to set apart or dispatch] Me [the speaker, Jesus]. word study 26 And I have made Your [divine, heavenly] name [character, authority] known to them and will continue to make it known [declare, reveal], so that the love [unconditional, divine affection] You have for Me may be in them, and I [as their Lord, Savior] in them [dwelling, abiding].” word study
