Joshua 1
BSA1 Now after [following, subsequent to] the death [passing away, end of life] of His servant [faithful attendant, devoted helper] Moses, the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] spoke [communicated, uttered His voice] to Joshua [God is salvation] son [descendant, offspring] of Nun, Moses’ [the leader’s, God’s chosen] assistant [minister, helper], saying [declaring, commanding], word study 2 “Moses [My faithful servant, My chosen leader] My servant is dead [has passed away, is no longer with us]. Now therefore [at this time, in this moment] arise [stand up, take action], you [as the new leader, as My chosen one] and all these people [the entire nation, the whole community], and cross over [pass through, transition into] the Jordan [the river that separates, the boundary] into the land [the promised territory, the inheritance] that I am giving [bestowing, granting] to the children of Israel [the descendants of Jacob, My chosen people]. word study 3 I have given [delivered, entrusted] you every [all, entire] place [location, region] where the sole [palm, underside] of your foot [steps, path] will tread [walk, step on], just as [according to] I promised [spoke, declared] to Moses [the leader, prophet]. word study 4 Your territory [land, region, or country] shall extend from the wilderness [desert, open field] and Lebanon [a mountain range in Israel] to the great River Euphrates [the largest and longest river in western Asia]—all [everything, the whole] the land of the Hittites [descendants of Heth, a man who lived during the time of the Patriarchs]—and west [toward the setting of the sun, the Mediterranean Sea] as far as the Great Sea [the large body of water, the western boundary]. word study 5 No one [not a single person, none] shall stand [resist, oppose] against you all [every, the entire] the days [periods of time, seasons] of your life [existence, mortal span]. As I was [existed, present] with Moses [the leader, prophet], so will I be [remain, abide] with you; I will never [at no time, not] leave [abandon, forsake] you nor [not, neither] forsake [give up, abandon] you. word study 6 Be strong [and of a good courage] and courageous [to seize or conquer], for you shall give [divide for an inheritance, cause to inherit] these people [this nation, a people or nation] the inheritance [heritage, promised land] of the land [earth, country, or region] that I swore [made a promise, gave an oath] to their fathers [ancestors, forefathers] I would give [deliver, put, or set] them. word study 7 Above all [except, only], be strong [to strengthen, courageous] and very [exceedingly, greatly] courageous [valiant, brave]. Be careful [diligent, attentive] to observe [to keep, obey] all [everything, every part] the law [instruction, commandment] that My servant [loyal attendant, bondservant] Moses [the Israelite leader] commanded [gave orders, appointed] you. Do not [by no means] turn [turn aside, depart] from it to the right [the direction of authority] or to the left [the direction of deviation], so that you may prosper [have good success, be successful] wherever [in every place] you go [walk, journey]. word study 8 This Book [scroll, written document] of the Law [instruction, divine guidance] must not depart [be removed, taken away] from your mouth [lips, speech]; meditate [mutter, ponder, reflect] on it day [by day, daily] and night [in the darkness, during rest], so that you may be careful [diligent, attentive] to do [make, perform, obey] everything written [recorded, inscribed] in it [the Law, God’s commandments]. For then [at that time, as a result] you will prosper [succeed, flourish, be successful] and succeed [be prudent, have good success] in all you do [your way, path, journey]. word study 9 Have I not [clearly] commanded you to be strong [courageous, of good courage] and courageous [to seize or conquer]? Do not be afraid [terrified, affrighted]; do not be discouraged [completely broken, dismayed], for the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God] is with [accompanied by, together with] you wherever you go [walk, move].” word study 10 Then Joshua [the leader] commanded [to give orders, appoint] the officers [officials, overseers] of the people [a nation, Amaw]: word study 11 “Go through [pass through the midst of] the camp [army, group of people] and tell the people [nation, community], ‘Prepare your provisions [food, victuals], for within three days [a short period of time] you will cross [transition, pass over] the Jordan [this river] to go in and take possession [occupy, inherit] of the land [earth, territory] that the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] your God [Elohim, Creator] is giving [providing, bestowing] you to possess [inherit, occupy].’” word study 12 But to the Reubenites [descendants of Reuben, son of Israel], the Gadites [tribe of Gad], and the half-tribe [half of the tribe, a division] of Manasseh, Joshua [a leader, successor of Moses] said [to speak, to command, to proclaim], word study 13 “Remember [keep in mind, do not forget] what Moses [the Israelite leader, servant of God] the servant [one who serves, a bondservant] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] commanded [gave orders, instructed] you when he said [spoke, uttered], ‘The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God] will give [bestow, grant] you rest [a state of peace, tranquility, settlement], and He will give [bestow, grant] you this [specific, particular] land [territory, region, the promised land].’ word study 14 Your wives [female companions, women], your young children [little ones, infants], and your livestock [cattle, animals] may remain in the land [territory, region] that Moses [the Israelite leader] gave you on this side [east side, region beyond] of the Jordan [the river, a key location]. But all [every one, the entire group] your mighty men of valor [strong warriors, able-bodied soldiers] must be armed [equipped, prepared] for battle to cross over ahead of your brothers [fellow Israelites, relatives] and help [assist, aid] them, word study 15 until the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] gives them rest [a state of peace and security] as He has done for you, and your brothers [male siblings or close relatives] also possess [take control of, occupy] the land [a country, territory, or region] that the LORD [Yehovah] your God [Elohim, the supreme God] is giving them [bestowing as a gift]. Then you may return [turn back, come back] to the land [a country, territory, or region] of your inheritance [a possession passed down] and take possession [occupy, have control] of that which Moses [the Israelite leader] the servant [one who serves] of the LORD [Yehovah] gave you [as a gift] on the east [the direction of the sunrise] side of the Jordan [the river running from Lebanon to the Dead Sea].” word study 16 So they answered [responded, gave a reply] Joshua [leader, God is salvation], “Everything [all things, whatsoever] you have commanded [given orders, instructed] us we will do [fulfill, obey], and everywhere [to any place, whithersoever] you send [dispatch, direct] us we will go [proceed, journey]. word study 17 Just as we obeyed [hearkened unto, listened to] Moses in all things [everything, every matter], so we will obey [hearken unto, give attention to] you. And may the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] your God [Elohim, the one true Deity] be with [together with, accompanying] you, as He was with [accompanied, helped] Moses. word study 18 Anyone who rebels [to resist or disobey authority] against your order [command or instruction] and does not obey [listen and follow] your words [commands or teachings], all [everything, the entirety] that you command [give orders or instruction] him, will be put to death [executed or killed as a punishment]. Above all [except or only], be strong [to strengthen or seize] and courageous [to have courage or be bold]!” word study
