BSA

1 After this [following these events, subsequent to this], the Lord [God, the supreme authority] appointed [chose, designated] seventy-two [a group of seventy, seventy others] others and sent them two by two [in pairs, as couples] ahead of Him [before His face, preceding Him] to every town [city, community] and place [location, region] He was about to visit [intended to come, would soon arrive]. word study 2 And He told them, “The harvest [time of gathering] is plentiful [abundant], but the workers [laborers] are few [limited in number]. Ask [pray] the Lord [Master] of the harvest [the gathering], therefore [then], to send out [to expel] workers [laborers] into His harvest [the time of reaping]. word study 3 Go [on your way, start going]! I [the sender] am sending [dispatching, setting apart] you out [forth, away] like [as, when] lambs [young sheep] among [in the midst of, surrounded by] wolves [fierce predators]. word study 4 Carry [do not take along] no purse [or wallet, a pouch for money] or bag [a leather pouch, like a traveler’s sack] or sandals [footwear, shoes to protect the feet]. Do not [refrain from] greet [pay respects to, welcome] anyone [no one, no person] along the road [on the way, the path ahead]. word study 5 Whatever [any, every] house [home, dwelling, family] you enter [go into, come into], begin [first of all, initially] by saying [to say, speak], ‘Peace [harmony, prosperity, freedom from war] to [upon, toward] this [the specific] house [home, household].’ word study 6 If a man [son, child] of peace [harmony, inner calm] is there [in that place, present], your peace [tranquility, wholeness] will rest [rely, depend] on him; if not [but if not, otherwise], it will return [turn back, come again] to you. word study 7 Stay at the same house [in that same home, remain], eating and drinking whatever [such things as they give] you are offered [provided, set before you]. For the worker [laborer, servant] is worthy [deserving, suitable] of his wages [compensation, reward]. Do not move around [go not, depart] from house to house [one house to another]. word study 8 If you enter [toward, into] a town [city, community] and they welcome [receive, take in] you, eat [consume, partake of] whatever [such things as] is set before [presented, provided to] you. word study 9 Heal [make well, cure] the sick [weak, feeble] who are there [in that place, among them] and tell [say, proclaim] them, ‘The kingdom [royal power, dominion] of God [the one true deity] is near [has come close, is at hand] you [to your location, in your midst].’ word study 10 But if you enter [go into, come to] a town [city, community] and they do not welcome [receive, accept] you, go [having gone forth, come out] into the streets [wide roads, public areas] and declare [say, proclaim], word study 11 ‘Even the dust [pulverized earth, insignificant material] of your town [city, community] that clings [sticks, adheres] to our feet, we wipe off [clean, remove] as a testimony [witness, evidence] against you. Yet be sure [know, understand] of this: The kingdom [royal power, dominion] of God [the one true deity, Creator] is near [approaching, at hand, come nigh].’ word study 12 I tell you [say unto you, declare to you], it will be more [rather, even more] bearable [tolerable, endurable] on that day [in that time, at the final judgment] for Sodom [the city of sin and destruction] than for that town [city, community]. word study 13 Woe [a curse, deep sorrow] to you, Chorazin [a town in Galilee]! Woe [alas, grief] to you, Bethsaida [a fishing village]! For if the miracles [mighty works, powerful deeds] that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre [a major port city] and Sidon [an ancient city], they would have repented [turned from sin, changed their minds] long ago, sitting in sackcloth [a rough, hairy cloth] and ashes [a symbol of repentance]. word study 14 But [however, in contrast] it will be more [tolerable, endurable] bearable for Tyre [an ancient city in Phoenicia] and [also, in addition] Sidon [a major city in Palestine] at [in, during, the time of] the judgment [divine verdict, decision] than [in comparison to] for you [as individuals, personally]. word study 15 And you, Capernaum [a town in Palestine, exalted to a high position], will you be lifted up [exalted, elevated] to heaven [the dwelling place of God, the sky]? No, you will be brought down [thrust, cast] to Hades [the place of the dead, hell, the grave]! word study 16 Whoever [gives ear to, heeds] listens to you [heareth you, obeys your message] listens to Me [heareth me, understands my voice]; whoever [despiseth] rejects you [rejecteth, sets aside your words] rejects Me [rejecteth, refuses my love]; and whoever [despiseth, turns away from] rejects Me [rejecteth, refuses my love] rejects the One [Him, the Father] who sent [dispatched as a messenger] Me [eme, the Son].” word study 17 The seventy-two [seventy disciples, a group of seventy] returned [came back, turned back] with joy [deep and lasting happiness] and said, “Lord [God, Master], even the demons [evil spirits, unclean beings] submit [are subject, obey] to us in Your name [authority, character].” word study 18 So He told them, “I [as the Son of God] saw Satan [the accuser, adversary] fall [collapse, come down] like [as swiftly as] lightning [a brilliant flash of light] from [out of, originating in] heaven [the spiritual realm, God’s dwelling place]. word study 19 Behold [see, perceive, attend to], I have given [bestowed, granted] you authority [power, freedom to act] to tread [trample, step on] on snakes [serpents, sly cunning] and scorpions [small but dangerous insects], and over all [every, everything] the power [strength, miraculous ability] of the enemy [Satan, a personal adversary]. Nothing [none, nobody] will harm [do wrong to, act unjustly] you. word study 20 Nevertheless [in spite of this], do not rejoice [be glad, feel happy] that the spirits [evil spirits, unclean spirits] submit [are subject, obey] to you, but rejoice [be glad, feel happy] that your names [your identity, who you are] are written [recorded, enrolled] in heaven [the spiritual realm, the presence of God].” word study 21 At that time [in that same hour, at that moment] Jesus rejoiced [was full of joy, glad] in the Holy Spirit [the divine Presence, the Spirit of God] and declared, “I praise [thank, confess] You, Father [the supreme Parent, Lord of all], Lord [Master, Ruler] of heaven [the sky, the spiritual realm] and earth [the land, the material world], because You have hidden [concealed, kept secret] these things from the wise [intelligent, discerning] and learned [educated, knowledgeable], and revealed [uncovered, disclosed] them to little children [the humble, the innocent]. Yes, Father [the loving Parent], for this was well-pleasing [good, acceptable] in Your sight [before You, in Your presence]. word study 22 All things [everything, the entire universe] have been entrusted [delivered, surrendered] to Me by My Father [the supreme Parent, God]. No one [nobody, not a single person] knows [is aware of, understands] who the Son [the Messiah, Christ] is except the Father [the Creator, God], and no one knows [is aware of, understands] who the Father [the Almighty, God] is except the Son [the Savior, Jesus] and those to whom the Son [the Lord, Jesus] chooses [desires, wills] to reveal [disclose, make known] Him.” word study 23 Then Jesus [having turned to face them] turned to the disciples and said privately [in a quiet, personal manner], “Blessed [happy, supremely fortunate] are the eyes [the faculties of spiritual perception] that see [perceive, discern] what you see [are witnessing, experiencing]. word study 24 For I tell you [declare to you, say unto you] that many [a large number, numerous] prophets [those who speak forth God’s will, messengers of God] and kings [sovereign rulers, monarchs] desired [willed, had a strong intention] to see [perceive, behold] what you see [are witnessing, are experiencing] but did not see [were not able to perceive, did not behold] it, and to hear [listen to, understand] what you hear [are hearing, are receiving] but did not hear [did not listen to, did not understand] it.” word study 25 One day [at a certain point, once] an expert [a certain lawyer, knowledgeable in the law] in the law [God’s commandments, spiritual principles] stood up [arose, got up] to test [tempt, put to the proof] Him. “Teacher [instructor, rabbi],” he asked, “what must I do [accomplish, fulfill] to inherit [receive as a gift, possess] eternal [lasting forever, age-during] life [spiritual existence, union with God]?” word study 26 “What [which thing, specifically] is written [recorded, inscribed] in the Law [the divine instruction]?” Jesus replied [said, spoke]. “How [in what way, by what means] do you read [understand, interpret] it [the Law, the scripture]?” word study 27 He answered, “‘Love [with all devotion, affectionately] the Lord [the supreme authority] your God [the one true deity] with all [completely, entirely] your heart [the seat of thoughts and emotions] and with all [completely, entirely] your soul [the breath of life] and with all [completely, entirely] your strength [power and ability] and with all [completely, entirely] your mind’ and ‘Love [tenderly, with compassion] your neighbor [one near to you] as [in the same way as] yourself.’ ” word study 28 “You have answered [rightly] correctly,” Jesus said. “Do [make, perform, carry out] this [as commanded, in obedience] and you will live [have life, exist, be alive].” word study 29 But wanting [desiring, willing] to justify [show himself righteous, vindicate] himself, he asked Jesus, “And who [which one, what person] is my neighbor [near one, fellow man, someone close by]?” word study 30 Jesus [the Savior, God’s salvation] took up [supposed, made an assumption] this question and said, “A man [a human being, someone] was going down [traveling, descending] from Jerusalem [the holy city, the capital of Palestine] to Jericho [a city in Palestine, near the Jordan River] when he fell [was attacked, suffered] into the hands of robbers [thieves, rebels, those who take by force]. They [the robbers, the attackers] stripped him [who stripped him, took his clothing and belongings], beat him [wounded him, gave him blows], and went away [departed, left him], leaving him [abandoning him, giving him up] half dead [severely injured, almost dead, on the brink of death]. word study 31 Now by chance [coincidence, happening by luck] a priest [one who serves God, spiritual leader] was going down [traveling, descending] the same road [path, way], but when he saw [perceived, noticed] him, he passed by [went by, ignored] on the other side [opposite side, avoiding him]. word study 32 So too [in a similar manner, likewise], when a Levite [a descendant of Levi, a temple servant] came to that spot [the place, location] and saw him [perceived, looked upon], he passed by [went by, passed over] on the other side [to the opposite side, away from him]. word study 33 But when a [certain, specific] Samaritan [from the region of Samaria] on a journey [traveling from one place to another] came upon him, he looked at him [saw, perceived] and had [felt, was moved with] compassion [pity, sympathy, to pity]. word study 34 He went to him and bandaged [treated, bound up] his wounds, pouring on [generously applying] oil [olive oil] and wine [a soothing agent]. Then he put him on his own [private, personal] animal [donkey, a beast of burden], brought him to an inn [a lodging place, a public house], and took care [showed compassion, provided for] of him. word study 35 The next day [on the morrow, tomorrow] he took out two denarii [two pence, two shillings, a day’s wage] and gave them to the innkeeper [host, owner of the house]. ‘Take care of him [be careful of him, take care to nurture him],’ he said, ‘and on my return [when I come again, at my coming back] I will repay you [give back to you, recompense you] for any additional expense [whatsoever you spend more, if this money is not enough].’ word study 36 Which [in your opinion] of these three do you think [suppose, have an opinion] was a neighbor [one who is near, a fellow Christian] to the man who fell [came into, was overwhelmed] into the hands [power, control] of robbers [thieves, rebels, those who take by force]?” word study 37 “The one [who acted mercifully] who showed him [pity or compassion] mercy [kindness and concern for others],” replied the expert [a man who studied the Scriptures] in the law. Then [therefore] Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] told him, “Go [travel, journey through life] and do [create, produce, or cause something to happen] likewise [in a similar manner, with the same kindness].” word study 38 As they traveled along [on their way, journeying], Jesus entered [came into, arrived at] a village [small town, rural area] where a woman [a certain woman, someone] named Martha [a Christian woman, a friend of Jesus] welcomed [received hospitably, invited] Him into her home [house, dwelling place]. word study 39 She had a sister named Mary [a devoted follower], who sat [took her seat, seated herself] at the Lord’s [Jesus’, the Master’s] feet [in a posture of humility, beside Him] listening [hearing, giving attention] to His message [word, teaching, preaching]. word study 40 But Martha was distracted [cumbered, pulled away] by all the preparations [much serving, many tasks] to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord [Master, God], do You not care [are You not concerned] that my sister [biological sister, fellow believer] has left me to serve [minister, attend to others] alone [by myself, without help]? Tell her to help [assist, support] me [in my service, with these tasks]!” word study 41 “Martha, Martha [Jesus],” the Lord replied, “you are [anxious, troubled] worried [full of care, concerned] and [disturbed] upset [troubled, disquieted] about [regarding, concerning] many [numerous, a multitude of] things. word study 42 But only [truly, really] one thing [needful, necessary] is necessary [required, essential]. Mary [the sister of Martha] has chosen [selected, picked] the good [beneficial, excellent] portion [part, share], and it will not [under no circumstances] be taken away [removed, withdrawn] from her [away from her presence, out of her life].” word study
