1 Then Jesus [and his disciples, entering with them] entered [went into, to become a part of] Jericho [an important city in Palestine, a place of spiritual significance] and was passing through [traversing, going from one side to the other, as in a journey of ministry]. word study 2 And there was a man [a male person, an adult] named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector [the chief among the publicans, a principle tax-gatherer], who was very wealthy [rich, having a large amount of money and possessions]. word study 3 He was trying [seeking diligently, making an effort] to see [perceive, gaze at] who Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] was, but could not see [was unable to gaze at, did not have a clear view] over the crowd [a large group of people, a multitude] because he was small [little, of short stature] in stature [physical height, age]. word study 4 So he ran on ahead [before them, to outrun others] and climbed [to ascend, went up] a sycamore tree [sycomore, a type of fig-mulberry tree] to see [to perceive, behold] Him, since [because, for the reason that] Jesus was about to pass [to ensue, to come by] that way [through that place, on that road]. word study 5 When Jesus [the Messiah, God’s salvation] came to that place [location, specific spot], He looked up [gazed upwards, recovered His sight] and said, “Zacchaeus [a tax collector, son of Zechariah], hurry down [make haste, come down quickly], for I must [it is necessary, I have to] stay [remain, abide] at your house [home, dwelling place] today [this day, at this time].” word study 6 So Zacchaeus [hastened, sped] hurried down and welcomed Him [with great happiness] [to his home, into his house] joyfully. word study 7 And all [every single one] who saw [perceived, took notice of] this began to grumble [murmur, complain quietly], saying, “He has gone [entered, lodged] to be the guest [to stay, to abide] of a [certain, particular] sinful [unrighteous, wicked] man [adult male, person]!” word study 8 But Zacchaeus [standing upright, as a sign of respect] stood up and said to the Lord [the supreme Master], “Look, Lord [the One in authority], half [a portion equal to the other] of my possessions [all that I own, my wealth] I give [bestow, freely offer] to the poor [those in need, the destitute], and if I have cheated [taken advantage of, wronged] anyone, I will repay [give back, restore] it fourfold [four times the amount].” word study 9 Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] said to him, “Today [at this present time, in this current moment] salvation [rescue or safety, either physically or morally] has come to this house [a physical dwelling], because [since, for the reason that] this man too [also, in addition] is a son [a child, a descendant] of Abraham [a Hebrew patriarch, considered the father of the Jewish nation]. word study 10 For the Son [the divine, eternal One] of Man [a human, the representative of humanity] came [to arrive or appear] to seek [to look for, to search diligently] and to save [to rescue, to deliver from harm] the lost [those who are spiritually astray, separated from God].” word study 11 While the people were listening [giving ear, paying attention] to this, Jesus proceeded [added, continued] to tell them a parable [a story that teaches a moral lesson], because He was near [close, approaching] Jerusalem and they thought [supposed, believed] the kingdom [royal power, dominion] of God [the supreme deity, Creator] would appear [be revealed, made manifest] imminently [instantly, right away, without delay]. word study 12 So He said, “A man [of noble birth, a certain nobleman] of noble birth went to a distant [far] country [region, land] to lay claim to his [royal authority, kingdom] kingship and then [to receive it, to come back] return. word study 13 Beforehand, he called [summoned, invited] ten of his servants [slaves, attendants] and gave them ten minas [coins, units of currency]. ‘Conduct business [trade, occupy, invest] with this [these resources, wealth] until [till the time] I return [come back, arrive],’ he said. word study 14 But his subjects [citizens, people of the kingdom] hated [detested, had strong dislike for] him and sent [dispatched, commissioned] a delegation [embassy, group of representatives] after him to say, ‘We do not [absolutely refuse] want this man [this ruler, this king] to rule [reign, have authority] over us [as our leader, as our sovereign].’ word study 15 When he returned [having come back again] from procuring [receiving, being invested with] his kingship [royal authority, kingdom], he summoned [commanded, called to him] the servants [slaves, attendants] to whom he had given [bestowed, entrusted] the money [silver, financial resources], to find out [that he might know, discover] what each one had earned [gained, made a profit]. word study 16 The first servant came forward [approached, drew near] and said, ‘Master [Lord, one in authority], your mina [unit of currency, a measure of wealth] has produced [earned, gained] ten [a decade, a complete number] more minas [additional units of currency].’ word study 17 His master replied, ‘Well done [you have done very well, good job], good [beneficial, morally upright] servant [slave, one who is subject to another]! Because you have been faithful [trustworthy, reliable] in a very small [least important, insignificant] matter, you shall have authority [power, freedom to act] over ten [a decade, a multitude] cities [towns, communities].’ word study 18 The [secondly, in sequence] second servant came and said, ‘Master [Lord, God, one in authority], your [belonging to you] mina [a unit of weight or currency, equivalent to 100 shekels] has made [produced, earned] five [a specific number] minas [units of currency, wealth].’ word study 19 And to this one [the faithful servant] he said, ‘You shall have authority [be ruler, take charge] over five [a specific number, a few] cities [towns, communities, places of governance].’ word study 20 Then another [different, distinct] servant came and said, ‘Master [Lord, God, one in authority], here is your mina [a unit of currency, a significant amount], which I have laid away [kept safe, reserved] in a piece of cloth [a handkerchief, a sudarium]. word study 21 For I was afraid [in awe, reverenced] of you, because you are a harsh [severe, austere] man. You withdraw [take up, lift] what you did not deposit [place, lay down] and reap [harvest, gather] what you did not sow [scatter seed, plant].’ word study 22 His master replied, ‘You [evil, wicked] wicked servant, I will judge [condemn, evaluate] you by your own words [out of your own mouth]. So you knew [perceived, understood] that I am a harsh [severe] man [taking up what I did not lay down, reaping what I did not sow], withdrawing [lifting up, removing] what I did not deposit [place, put down] and reaping [harvesting, gathering] what I did not sow [scatter seed, plant]? word study 23 Why then did you not deposit [give, entrust] my money [silver coins, wealth] in the bank [a place for money exchange, a table for transactions], and upon [at the time of, when] my return [coming, arrival] I could have collected [received, required] it with interest [usury, profit from lending]?’ word study 24 Then he told those standing by [near, beside him], ‘Take the mina [a unit of weight or currency, equivalent to 100 shekels] from him and give it to the one who has ten minas [a significant amount of money].’ word study 25 ‘Master,’ they said, ‘he already has [possesses, is in control of] ten [a decade, a complete amount]!’ word study 26 He replied, ‘I tell you [declare to you, say unto you] that everyone who has [possesses, holds] will be given [bestowed, granted] more; but the one who does not have [lacks, is without], even what he has [possesses, holds] will be taken away [removed, lifted up] from him [away from his presence]. word study 27 And these enemies [those who oppose, hateful adversaries] of mine who were unwilling [refused, did not want] for me to rule [reign, have authority] over them, bring [lead, gather] them here and slay [kill, slaughter] them in front of [before, in the presence of] me.’” word study 28 After Jesus had said [spoken, shared his teachings] this, He went on ahead [before, in front of them], going up [ascending, traveling upwards] to Jerusalem [the holy city]. word study 29 As He approached [drew near to, came close to] Bethphage [house of unripe figs] and Bethany [a village near Jerusalem] at the Mount of Olives [a high elevation of land, the mount called Olivet], He sent out [dispatched, set apart] two [a small number, a pair] of His disciples [learners, pupils, followers], word study 30 saying, “Go into the village [a small town, rural area] ahead of you, and as you enter [come into, associate with] it, you will find a colt [a young donkey, unbroken] tied [bound, fastened] there, on which [upon, against] no one [nobody, none] has ever [at any time] sat [been seated, ridden]. Untie [release, set free] it and bring [lead, guide] it here [to this place, hither]. word study 31 If anyone [a person, someone] asks [inquires, questions], ‘Why are you untying [releasing, loosing] it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord [the Master, God] needs [has need of, requires] it [for His purpose].’” word study 32 So those who were sent [apostles, dispatched on a mission] went out [departed, to go away] and found [discovered, came upon] it just as [exactly as, in the same manner] Jesus had told [spoken, commanded] them [to them, in their hearing]. word study 33 As they were untying [loosing, releasing] the colt [a young donkey], its owners [the lords, masters] asked, “Why are you untying [releasing, setting free] the colt [this young animal]?” word study 34 “The [this specific] Lord [master or God] needs [has necessity or requirement] it [because the Lord hath need of him],” they answered [said, spoke, or replied]. word study 35 Then they led [brought, took] the colt [young donkey, foal] to Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation], threw [cast, threw on] their cloaks [garments, clothing] over it [upon the animal], and put [set, mounted] Jesus [the Messiah, the Savior] on it [upon the colt, on its back]. word study 36 As He rode along [on His way, traveling], the people spread [strewed, threw down] their cloaks [garments, clothing] on the road [path, way] [in front of Him, to honor Him]. word study 37 And as He approached [drawing near, coming close to] the descent [going down, slope] from the Mount [hill, elevation] of Olives [olive trees, a place of anointing], the whole multitude [large group, crowd] of disciples [learners, followers] began to praise [give thanks, glorify] God [the one true Deity, Creator] joyfully [with joy, happily] in a loud voice [with a great sound, loudly] for all [every, everything] the miracles [mighty works, powerful deeds] they had seen [perceived, witnessed]: word study 38 “Blessed [praised, glorified] is the King [sovereign ruler, monarch] who comes [arrives, enters] in the name [character, authority] of the Lord [God, Master]!” “Peace [harmony, tranquility] in heaven [the spiritual realm, God’s dwelling] and glory [honor, praise] in the highest [most exalted, supreme]!” word study 39 But some [certain] of the Pharisees [a Jewish sect that followed strict religious rules] in the crowd [a large group of people, a multitude] said to Him, “Teacher [a master or instructor], rebuke [to warn or scold] Your disciples [learners or pupils]!” word study 40 “I tell you [declare to you, say to you],” He answered [replied, responded], “if they [these people, the crowd] remain silent [be quiet, hold their peace], the very stones [rocks, literal or figurative] will cry out [shout, proclaim loudly].” word study 41 As Jesus [when he drew nigh] approached Jerusalem [the holy city, the center of God’s people] and saw [perceived, gazed upon] the city [the town with walls, the people who lived there], He wept [cried out loud, mourned deeply] over [upon, for the sake of] it [the city, its people] word study 42 and said, “If only [certainly, truly] you had known [recognized, understood] on this day [at this present time, in this moment] what would bring you [lead to your experience of] peace [harmony, prosperity, freedom from war]! But now [at this present moment, currently] it is hidden [concealed, veiled] from your eyes [your sight, your understanding]. word study 43 For the days [a period of time, an era] will come upon [against, to] you when your enemies [those who oppose, hate] will barricade [build a ramp, cast a trench] you and surround [encircle, compass] you and hem [keep, oppress] you in on every side [from all directions, completely]. word study 44 They will level [completely destroy, raze] you to the ground—you and the children [born to you, your offspring] within your walls. They will not leave [release, abandon] one stone [rock, foundation] on another, because you did not recognize [know, understand] the time [season, opportunity] of your visitation [oversight, inspection] from God [the supreme Creator]. ” word study 45 Then Jesus [the Messiah, Savior] entered [went into, came toward] the temple [sacred place, house of God] courts [outer areas, public spaces] and began [commenced, started to] to drive out [expel, cast out] those who were selling [trading, exchanging goods] there [in the temple, on the premises]. word study 46 He declared to them, “It is written [in the Scriptures, as a divine decree]: ‘My house [a place of worship and community] will be a house of prayer [a place for communion with God].’ But you have made it [through your actions, by desecrating it] ‘a den [a hideout] of robbers [those who take by force].’ ” word study 47 Jesus was teaching [daily, every day] at the temple [a sacred place, the Temple in Jerusalem] every day, but the chief priests [high-priests, top Jewish leaders], scribes [scholars, teachers of the law], and leaders [rulers, principal men] of the people [a group, a nation] were intent on [sought to, trying to] killing [destroy, put to death] Him. word study 48 Yet they could not find [discover a way] a way to do so, because all [every single one] the people hung [were very attentive to hear, listening closely] on His words [the teachings and message of Jesus]. word study
