BSA

1 Now the Feast [festival, celebration] of Unleavened Bread [without yeast], called [also known as, referred to as] the Passover [commemorating Israel’s escape from slavery], was approaching [drawing near, coming close], word study 2 and the chief priests [high-ranking Jewish leaders] and scribes [teachers of the law] were looking for a way [seeking how] to put Jesus to death [kill him, destroy him]; for they feared [were in awe of, revered] the people [the crowd, the nation]. word study 3 Then [at that moment, next] Satan [the Adversary, enemy of God] entered [came into, took control of] Judas [called Iscariot, a man from Kerioth] Iscariot [from Kerioth, a village], who was [being, counted as] one of the Twelve [apostles, disciples]. word study 4 And Judas went [to depart, away from Jesus] to discuss [to talk with, commune] with the chief priests [high-priest, top Jewish leaders] and temple officers [magistrates, high-ranking leaders] how he might [in what way, by what means] betray [deliver, surrender] Jesus to them [into their hands, under their control]. word study 5 They were delighted [and glad, rejoiced] and agreed [covenanted, undertook to give] to give [bestow, grant] him money [silver coins, a sum of silver]. word study 6 Judas consented [agreed, promised], and began to look for an opportunity [favourable season, chance] to betray [deliver, hand over] Jesus to them in the absence [without, apart from] of a crowd [multitude, large group of people]. word study 7 Then [at that time, next] came the day [a 24-hour period, a period of time] of Unleavened Bread [without yeast] on which [when, at the time] the Passover lamb [the pasch, a sacrifice for redemption] was to be sacrificed [killed, offered to God]. word study 8 Jesus [the Messiah, Savior] sent [dispatched, commissioned] Peter [the rock, a foundation] and John [the beloved disciple], saying [to speak, to command], “Go [travel, journey] and prepare [make ready, set apart] for us [on our behalf, for our sake] to eat [partake of, share in] the Passover [the Jewish festival, commemorating liberation].” word study 9 “Where [in what location, at what place] do You [as our Lord and Master] want [desire, intend] us to prepare [make ready, get everything set] it [the Passover, the meal]?” they [the disciples, His followers] asked [said, inquired]. word study 10 He answered, “When you [as disciples, followers of Jesus] enter [come into, arrive at] the city [a place of gathering, community], a man [a human, an individual] carrying [bearing, lifting] a jug [clay jar, pitcher] of water will meet [encounter, come across] you. Follow [accompany, go after] him to the house [home, dwelling place] he enters [goes into, inhabits], word study 11 and say to the owner [master, householder] of that house, ‘The Teacher [instructor] asks: Where is the guest room [lodging place], where I may eat [partake of, share in] the Passover [commemoration of Israel’s deliverance] with My disciples [learners, followers]?’ word study 12 And he will show [reveal, exhibit] you [to you directly] a large [great, spacious] upper room [on the upper floor], already [previously] furnished [set up, prepared]. Make preparations [get everything ready, prepare the meal] there [in that place, at that location].” word study 13 So they went [away, departed] and found [discovered, came upon] it just as [exactly like, in the same manner] Jesus had told [spoken to, instructed] them. And they prepared [made ready, set in order] the Passover [the Jewish festival commemorating Israel’s escape, the paschal lamb]. word study 14 When [at the appointed time, the specific point] the hour [a specific time, an hour of destiny] had come, Jesus [the Messiah, the Savior] reclined [sat down, leaned back] at the table [for a meal, in a posture of rest] with [together with, in close association] His apostles [messengers, delegates of Christ, the twelve]. word study 15 And He said to them, “I have [earnestly, with strong desire] eagerly desired [longed for, yearned to] to eat this [Jewish festival commemorating the Israelites’ escape from slavery] Passover with you [in your company, together] before [prior to, preceding] My [personal, relating to Jesus] suffering [enduring pain, hardship, or misfortune]. word study 16 For I tell you [declare to you, say unto you] that I will not eat it again [no more, not any more] until it is fulfilled [made complete, satisfied] in the kingdom [royal power, dominion] of God [the one true deity].” word study 17 After taking [receiving, accepting] the cup [a drinking vessel, the contents of which], He gave thanks [expressed gratitude, was thankful] and said, “Take [accept, receive] this [the cup] and divide [distribute, share] it among yourselves [as a community]. word study 18 For I tell you [say unto you, declare to you] that I will not drink [shall not drink, will not taste] of the fruit [produce, offspring] of the vine [the grapevine] from now on [from this time, henceforth] until [till, while] the kingdom [reign, dominion] of God [the one true deity, Creator] comes [arrives, is established].” word study 19 And He took [received, accepted] the bread [loaf, food], gave thanks [expressed gratitude, was thankful] and broke [shared, distributed] it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body [physical person, flesh], given [sacrificed, offered] for you [on your behalf, in your place]; do this [perform this act, remember] in remembrance [memory, commemoration] of Me [in honor of Me, to recall My sacrifice].” word study 20 In the same way [likewise, in a similar manner], after supper He took the cup [the vessel used for the wine], saying, “This cup [the contents of which represent my blood] is the new [fresh, recently established] covenant [a formal agreement, a promise] in My blood [the atoning blood of Christ, which is shed for the forgiveness of sins], which is poured out [shed, given] for you [on your behalf, for your benefit]. word study 21 Look [behold, see]! The hand [instrument, power] of My betrayer [one who delivers me up, false to me] is with [in accompaniment, among] Mine [My own, I] on [upon, at] the table [dining table, place of fellowship]. word study 22 Indeed, the Son of Man [the Messiah, God’s appointed one] will go as it has been determined [according to God’s plan, by divine decree], but woe [deep sorrow, utter calamity] to that man who betrays [hands over, delivers up] Him [to suffering and death].” word study 23 Then they began [to initiate, started] to question [debate, discuss] among themselves [with each other, internally] which [what, who] of them [themselves, their own group] was going [about to, intending to] to do [perform, carry out] this [specific action, thing]. word study 24 A dispute [strife, contention, love of dispute] also arose [happened, came into being] among [in, on, with] the disciples [apostles] as to [concerning, regarding] which [who, what] of them [themselves, among themselves] would be considered [thought, supposed, accounted] the greatest [most important, supreme, having greater status]. word study 25 So Jesus declared, “The kings [rulers, sovereigns] of the Gentiles [non-Jewish nations, heathen] lord it over them [exercise dominion, rule with authority], and those in authority [having power, exercising control] over them call themselves [are called, claim to be] benefactors [ones who do good, philanthropists]. word study 26 But you [as followers of Christ] shall not be like them [the worldly leaders]. Instead, the greatest [most prominent, esteemed] among you should be like the youngest [most humble, inexperienced], and the one who leads [governs, has authority] like the one who serves [ministers, attends to the needs of others]. word study 27 For who [which one, what person] is greater, the one who reclines [sits, lies down] at the table or the one who serves [attends, ministers]? Is it not the one who reclines [sits, is seated]? But I am among [in the midst of, with] you as one who serves [ministers, attends to your needs]. word study 28 You [the ones addressed directly] are the ones who have stood by [remained with, continued with] Me [the speaker, Jesus] in My [belonging to Jesus] trials [temptations, testings, difficult situations]. word study 29 And I [also, in addition] bestow [appoint, grant] on you [as my disciples] a kingdom [royal power and dominion], just as [in the same manner] My Father [the ultimate authority] has bestowed [assigned, disposed] one on Me [to me], word study 30 so that you may eat [take food and drink] and drink [swallow a liquid] at My table [the place of fellowship and communion] in My kingdom [the realm of My rule and authority], and sit [be seated like kings] on thrones [seats of power and judgment], judging [making decisions and forming opinions] the twelve [a dozen, a complete number] tribes [clans or families] of Israel [God’s chosen people]. word study 31 Simon, Simon [listen, pay attention], Satan [the adversary, accuser] has asked [demanded, requested] to sift [test, winnow] each of you [as individuals] like wheat [grain]. word study 32 But I [the speaker] have prayed [made supplication, begged] for you, Simon, that your faith [trust and confidence in God] will not [in no way] fail [cease or come to an end]. And when you [as an individual] have turned back [reverted or returned], strengthen [establish or set firmly] your brothers [fellow Christians].” word study 33 “Lord [master and God],” said Peter, “I am [prepared and willing] ready to go [to travel and journey] with You [in accompaniment and fellowship with you] even to [toward and into] prison [a place of confinement and guard] and to [toward and into] death [physical or spiritual cessation of life].” word study 34 But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter [the rock, a disciple], the rooster [a male chicken] will not crow today [in this current time] until you have denied [to utterly refuse] three times [thrice] that you know [to perceive] Me [I, the Messiah].” word study 35 Then Jesus asked them, “When [at that specific time] I sent you out [dispatched you on a mission] without [lacking] purse [a pouch for money] or bag [a leather pouch] or sandals [footwear], did you lack [fall short] anything [something]?” “Nothing [none],” they answered. word study 36 “Now [at this present time], however,” He told them, “the one [who has the means] with a purse [money bag, wallet] should take it, and likewise [in the same manner] a bag [sack, provisions]; and the one without [lacking, not having] a sword [short sword, dagger] should sell [give up, exchange] his cloak [outer garment, mantle] and buy [acquire, purchase] one [for protection, for defense]. word study 37 For I tell you [declare to you, say unto you] that this Scripture [written word, prophecy] must be fulfilled [completed, brought to an end] in Me: ‘And He was numbered [reckoned, counted] with the transgressors [lawless ones, wicked] [those who break God’s law].’ For what is written [recorded, prophesied] about Me [concerning my life and mission] is reaching its fulfillment [reaching its end, being completed].” word study 38 So they said, “Look [behold, see], Lord [God, Master], here [in this place] are two [a pair of] swords [short swords, daggers].” “That [it] is enough [sufficient, adequate],” He answered [said, spoke]. word study 39 Jesus went out [as his custom was, according to his usual practice] as usual to the Mount [hill, elevation] of Olives [olive trees, a place of prayer], and the disciples [learners, followers] followed [accompanied, walked with] Him. word study 40 When He came [arrived, was present] to the place [location, specific spot], He told [said, spoke to] them, “Pray [worship, ask God] that you will not [lest, God forbid] enter [go into, come into] into [toward, into the midst of] temptation [testing, trial, a difficult situation challenging faith or character].” word study 41 And He withdrew [about a stone’s cast, a short distance] about a stone’s throw [like a stone can be tossed, a brief space] beyond them, where He knelt down [on His knees, in reverence] and prayed [to God, with devotion], word study 42 “Father [a male parent, like Joseph, the father of Jesus], if You are willing [to plan or desire something], take [to take away or carry off] this cup [a drinking vessel or the contents of it] from Me [I or me]. Yet not My will [a person’s choice or intention], but Yours [something that belongs to You] be done [to be or come into being].” word study 43 Then [at that moment, afterwards] an angel [a heavenly messenger] from heaven [the sky, God’s dwelling place] appeared [was seen] to Him [Jesus, the Son of God] and strengthened [gave power to] Him [emotionally and spiritually]. word study 44 And in His [intense, emotional] anguish [a struggle, agony], He prayed [to God, worshiped] more earnestly [with intense feeling, fervently], and His sweat [perspiration, emotional distress] became like [as it were, similar to] drops [great drops, large] of blood [the atoning blood of Christ] falling [coming down, descending] to the ground [the earth, soil]. word study 45 When Jesus rose [got up, stood up] from prayer [a place of communion with God] and returned [came back] to the disciples [learners, pupils], He found [discovered] them asleep [sleeping], exhausted [worn out, overcome] from sorrow [grief, deep emotional pain]. word study 46 “Why [for what reason, what is the cause] are you sleeping [in a state of spiritual lethargy, unaware]?” He asked [said, spoke to them]. “Get up [arise, stand up from your slumber] and pray [to petition, worship, and communicate with God] so that you will not [lest you, in order that you may not] enter [come into, experience] into [a state of, a time of] temptation [testing, trial, a difficult situation that challenges faith].” word study 47 While He was still [yet, ongoing] speaking, a crowd [multitude, large group of people] arrived, led by the man called Judas [one of Jesus’ twelve apostles], one of the Twelve [twelve disciples, Jesus’ inner circle]. He approached Jesus to kiss Him [as a sign of greeting or betrayal]. word study 48 But Jesus [the Son of God, the Messiah] asked him, “Judas [the betrayer, Judas Iscariot], are you [intentionally, with a deliberate act] betraying [delivering up, surrendering] the Son [a divine being] of Man [a human being] with a kiss [a symbol of love and respect]?” word study 49 Those around [about, surrounding] Jesus saw [perceived, understood] what was about [going, destined] to happen and said, “Lord [Master, the One in authority], should we strike [smite, attack] with our swords [the short sword]?” word study 50 And one [a certain] of them struck [smote, hit] the servant [slave, bondservant] of the high priest [chief priest, spiritual leader], cutting off [struck off, removed] his right [on the right side] ear [the organ of hearing]. word study 51 But Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] answered [to respond, to begin], “No more [stop, do not continue] of this [thus far, to this point]!” And He [emphatically, He himself] touched [to attach oneself, to make contact] the man’s [servant’s, the one who serves] ear [the entire ear, the earlobe] and healed [to cure, to restore] him [the one who was hurt]. word study 52 Then Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] said to the chief priests [high-priest, a top Jewish leader], temple officers [magistrates of the temple, high-ranking leaders], and elders [respected leaders in the community] who had come for Him, “Have you come out [gone out, arrived at a place] with swords [a short sword or dagger] and clubs [wooden objects, staffs] as you would against an outlaw [a robber, a rebel, someone who takes things by force]? word study 53 Every day [daily, when I was with you in the temple courts] I was with you in the temple courts [the sacred place, the Temple in Jerusalem], and you did not lay [stretch out, extend] a hand [power, instrument] on Me. But this hour [specific time, moment] belongs to you and to the power [authority, freedom to act] of darkness [absence of light, spiritual darkness].” word study 54 Then [at that moment, next] they seized [apprehending, took hold of] Jesus, led [brought, guided] Him away, and took [brought, introduced] Him into [toward, inside] the house [dwelling, residence] of the high priest [chief Jewish leader, spiritual authority]. And Peter [the rock, disciple] followed [accompanied, trailed] at a distance [from afar, remotely]. word study 55 When those present [gathered, assembled] had kindled [lit, started] a fire [flames, blaze] in the middle [midst, central position] of the courtyard [open area, palace] and sat down [took a seat, reclined] together, Peter [the rock, apostle] sat down [was seated, reclining] among [in the midst of, with] them. word study 56 A [certain, young] servant girl [maidservant, female slave] saw him [intently, with focused attention] seated [sitting, in a position of rest] in the firelight [the light of the fire, the warmth and glow] and looked [gazed, stared] intently [earnestly, with great interest] at him [having seen him clearly]. “This man [this one, he] also [too, in addition] was with Him [in His company, as a companion],” she said. word study 57 But Peter denied it [rejected the truth, said no]. “Woman [a female, a wife], I do [absolutely, completely] not know [perceive, have knowledge of] Him [Jesus, the Messiah],” he said [spoke, declared]. word study 58 A short time [little while, brief period] later, someone else [another, a different person] saw him and said, “You [to you, directly] also [too, in addition] are one of them [of their group, among them].” But Peter [the rock, Simon] said, “Man [human being, a person], I am not [absolutely not, no].” word study 59 About [approximately, nearly] an hour [a specific time, a short period] later, another [different, a second] man insisted [confidently affirmed, spoke with conviction], “Certainly [truly, of a truth] this man [he, this person] was with [accompanied, in the company of] Him, for [because, since] he too [also, likewise] is [exists as, is characterized as] a Galilean [from Galilee, a resident of Jesus’ home region].” word study 60 “Man [a human, a person], I do not know [am unaware, have no knowledge of] what you are talking about [saying, speaking],” Peter [the rock, a disciple] replied [said, spoke]. While he was still speaking [yet talking, continuing to say], the rooster [a male chicken, a cock] crowed [made a loud cry, sounded]. word study 61 And the Lord [the Master, God] turned [completely, to face] and looked [closely, with concern] at Peter [the rock, the apostle]. Then Peter remembered [brought to mind, recalled] the word [Logos, the divine message] that the Lord [the Supreme One] had spoken [declared, uttered] to him: “Before [prior to, sooner than] the rooster [the crowing bird] crows [makes its loud call] today [in this present day], you will deny [utterly disown, reject] Me [the Messiah, Jesus] three times [thrice, on three occasions].” word study 62 And [then, at that moment] he [Peter, the rock] went outside [out of the courtyard, into the open] and wept [cried out loud, mourned] bitterly [with intense sorrow, deeply grieved]. word study 63 The men [who were guarding, holding in custody] who were holding Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] began to mock [ridicule, jeer at] Him and beat [flay, scourge] Him. word study 64 They blindfolded [covered His eyes, to conceal His vision] Him and kept demanding [repeatedly asking, with urgency], “Prophesy [speak under divine inspiration, to foretell]! Who [which one, what person] hit [struck, smote] You [directly, with force]?” word study 65 And they said [shouted, spoke] many [a large number, numerous] other [different, additional] blasphemous [reviling, speaking evilly] things [words, insults] against [toward, to] Him [Jesus, the Messiah]. word study 66 At daybreak [when morning came, at dawn] the council [assembly, gathering] of the elders [leaders, rulers] of the people [a nation, a group], both the chief priests [high-priests, top Jewish leaders] and scribes [scholars, teachers of the law], met together [assembled, gathered]. They led Jesus into their Sanhedrin [council, Jewish court] and said [spoke, began to question], word study 67 “If You are [truly] the Christ [Messiah, anointed one], tell us [declare Your identity].” Jesus answered, “If I tell you [reveal My nature to you], you will not [absolutely refuse to] believe [have faith, trust]. word study 68 And if [in the event that, under these circumstances] I ask [question, request an answer] you a question [about my identity or mission], you will [by your own choice, deliberately] not [under no circumstances, absolutely] answer [respond, give a reply]. word study 69 But from now [at this present time, henceforth] on the Son [a divine being] of Man [a human] will be seated [sitting in a position of authority] at the right [the place of honor] hand of the power [miraculous ability] of God [the one true deity, Almighty].” word study 70 So they all [every single one of them] asked, “Are You then [at this point in time] the Son [having the nature] of God [the supreme Deity, Creator of all]?” He replied, “You say [declare, affirm] that I am [exist, have being].” word study 71 “Why do we need [any further] any more testimony [evidence, witness]?” they declared [said, stated]. “We have heard [listened, understood] it for ourselves [personally, directly] from His own [this] lips [mouth, words, the mouth as a symbol of speech].” word study
