BSA

1 On the first day [at dawn, very early] of the week [Sabbath, a day of rest], very early [at early dawn, before sunrise] in the morning, the women [certain women, they] came to the tomb [sepulchre, memorial], bringing [bearing, carrying] the spices [aromatics, fragrant substances] they had prepared [made ready, gotten ready]. word study 2 They found [discovered, came upon] the stone [a large rock, a barrier] rolled away [removed, taken out of the way] from the tomb [sepulchre, grave, place of interment], word study 3 but when they entered [went in, and found], they did not find [discovered nothing, no sign of] the body [physical person, flesh] of the Lord [Master, God] Jesus [God is salvation, the Christ]. word study 4 While they were [completely] puzzling over this, suddenly [behold, it came to pass] two men [adult males, messengers] in [dazzling, shining] radiant apparel [clothing, garments] stood [appeared, came to stand] beside them. word study 5 As the women bowed [in reverence and fear, affrighted] their faces to the ground [the earth, soil] in terror [being afraid, terrified], the two men asked them, “Why do you look for [seek, search] the living [one who has life, is alive] among [with, together with] the dead [lifeless, deceased, spiritually dead]? word study 6 He is not [completely absent] here; He has risen [been raised from the dead, come back to life]! Remember [recall to mind, bring to remembrance] how He told [spoke, uttered words] you while He was still [yet, ongoing] in Galilee [the region of Galilee, a district in Palestine]: word study 7 ‘The Son [a son or child] of Man [a human being] must be delivered [to surrender or yield up] into the hands [power or instrument] of sinful [wrongdoers] men [human beings], and be crucified [to impale on a cross], and on the third day [a 24-hour period] rise again [to stand up or get up from a position of rest].’” word study 8 Then they remembered [brought to mind, recalled] His words [declarations, utterances] [of prophecy and promise] [what he’d said, his sayings]. word study 9 And when they returned [came back, turned back] from the tomb [grave, sepulchre], they reported [told, announced] all these things [everything that had happened] to the Eleven [eleven apostles, eleven disciples] and to all [every one, the rest of] the others [remaining ones, those who were left]. word study 10 It was Mary Magdalene [from Magdala village], Joanna, Mary [a disciple] the mother of James, and the other women [remaining, who were left] with them [in close association, together] who told [shared, spoke, declared] this [these things, the news] to the apostles [messengers, delegates of Jesus Christ]. word study 11 But their words [seemed like idle tales, appeared as nonsense] seemed like nonsense [foolish or idle talk] to them, and they did not believe [to disbelieve or have no faith] the women [these female messengers]. word study 12 Peter [the rock, a disciple of Jesus], however, got up [arose, stood up] and ran [hastily, with urgency] to the tomb [grave, sepulcher]. And after bending down [stooping, leaning over] and seeing [perceiving, gazing at] only the linen cloths [bandages, grave clothes], he went away [departed, went back home], wondering [marveling, amazed] to himself [in his own mind, pondering] what had happened [come to pass, occurred]. word study 13 That same day [in the same 24-hour period, during that very time] two [a pair, a duo] of them were going [traveling, journeying] to a village [a small town, a rural area] called [named, known as] Emmaus [a place of encounter, a location of revelation], about [approximately, nearly] seven miles [sixty stadia, a significant distance] from [away from, outside of] Jerusalem [the city of peace, the holy city]. word study 14 They were [communing, talking together] talking with each other [one another, mutually] about [concerning, regarding] everything [all things, all these things] that had [occurred, taken place] happened [come to pass, occurred]. word study 15 And as they [communed together, talked and reasoned] talked and deliberated [discussed and debated], Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] Himself came up [drew near, approached] and walked [journeyed together, went with] along with them [in their company, as a companion]. word study 16 But their eyes [were holden, not open to recognize] were kept [prevented, grasped] from recognizing [to come to know deeply, have a profound understanding of] Him [the Messiah, Jesus]. word study 17 He asked them, “What are you discussing [exchanging ideas, talking about] so intently as you walk [live, journey] along?” They stood still, with sadness [a gloomy appearance, sorrow] on their faces. word study 18 One of them, named Cleopas [a disciple who recognized Jesus], asked Him, “Are You the only visitor [stranger, sojourner] to Jerusalem [the holy city, the capital of Palestine] who does not know [is unaware, has not heard] the things [events, happenings] that have happened [occurred, taken place] there in recent days [these past few days, this time]?” word study 19 “What things [events, happenings]?” He asked. “The events [things, matters] involving Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] of Nazareth [a Nazoraeus, a Christian],” they answered. “This man [a prophet, a messenger of God] was a prophet [one who speaks for God, a spokesperson], powerful [able, strong] in speech [logos, the divine Expression] and action [work, deed] before God [the Supreme Being, Elohim] and all [every, the whole] the people [a nation, a group of individuals]. word study 20 Our [high-ranking] chief priests [Jewish leaders] and rulers [those in authority] delivered Him up [handed over, surrendered] to the sentence [judgment, decision] of death [physical and spiritual], and they crucified [impaled on a cross, executed] Him. word study 21 But we were hoping [trusting, having confidence] He was the One [the Messiah, the Savior] who would redeem [ransom, set free] Israel [God’s chosen people]. And besides all this [in addition to everything], it is the third day since these things [events, circumstances] took place [happened, occurred]. word study 22 Furthermore, some [certain] of our women [female followers] astounded [amazed, astonished] us. They were [having been] at the tomb [sepulchre, grave] early [at dawn, in the morning] this morning [the early part of the day], word study 23 but they did not [were unable to] find His [Jesus’] body [physical person]. They came [approached, returned] and told us they had seen [experienced, perceived] a vision [spiritual appearance, supernatural experience] of angels [heavenly messengers, divine agents], who said [declared, proclaimed] that Jesus [the Messiah, Christ] was alive [living, in a state of being]. word study 24 Then some [certain] of our companions [who were with us] went to the tomb [sepulchre, grave] and found it just as [even so as, exactly like] the women [females, wives] had described [said, reported]. But Him [Jesus, the Messiah] they did not see [perceive, behold].” word study 25 Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish [unintelligent, lacking understanding] ones, how [extremely, very] slow [dull, sluggish] are your hearts [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions] to believe [to trust, have faith] all that the [inspired messengers of God] prophets have spoken [uttered, declared]! word study 26 Was it not [certainly, without a doubt] necessary [behooving, required by God’s plan] for the Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah] to suffer [experience pain, endure hardship] these things [these events, this fate] and then to enter [go into, come into possession of] His glory [honor, praise, heavenly splendor]?” word study 27 And beginning [from the very start] with Moses [the Hebrew lawgiver] and all [every single one] the Prophets [those who speak forth God’s will], He explained [interpreted thoroughly, made clear] to them what was written [recorded, inscribed] in all [every part of] the Scriptures [holy writings, God’s Word] about [concerning, regarding] Himself [His own person, His identity]. word study 28 As they approached [drew near to, came close to] the village [a small town, rural area] where they were headed [going, traveling to], He seemed [made an appearance of, pretended to] to be going [traveling, journeying] farther [at a distance, further away]. word study 29 But they [urged, constrained] pleaded with Him, “Stay [abide, remain] with us, for it is nearly [toward, almost] evening [the time of sunset] and the day [a 24-hour period, a period of time] is almost [far spent, coming to a close] over.” So He went in [entered, came into their home] to stay [remain, abide] with them. word study 30 While He was reclining [sitting down to eat, at table] at the table with them, He took [received, accepted] bread [food, nourishment], spoke a blessing [gave thanks, praised God] and broke [divided, shared] it, and gave [delivered, handed over] it to them. word study 31 Then [at that moment, suddenly] their eyes [sight, vision, understanding] were opened [to open up, to reveal] and they recognized [came to know, understood] Jesus [the Messiah, the Savior]—and He [emphatically, He himself] disappeared [vanished, became unseen] from their sight [from their presence, out of their view]. word study 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning [burning with passion, deeply stirred] within us as He spoke [communicating divine truth, sharing His wisdom] with us on the road [the path of life, their journey] and opened [revealing, explaining] the Scriptures [holy Writings, God’s Word] to us [enlightening our understanding, giving us insight]?” word study 33 And they got up [immediately, that very moment] that very hour [at the same time, instantly] and returned [turned back, went back] to Jerusalem [the holy city, the capital of Palestine]. There they found [discovered, came upon] the Eleven [the eleven apostles, the remaining disciples] and those with them [who were accompanying them, in their company], gathered together [assembled, collected in one place] word study 34 and saying, “The Lord [the supreme Master, God] has indeed [truly, really] risen [been raised from the dead, come back to life] and has appeared [been seen, revealed Himself] to Simon [Peter, the apostle]!” word study 35 Then the two told what had happened [on their journey, along the way] on the road [path, journey], and how they had recognized [come to know, understood] Jesus [the Messiah, Savior] in the breaking [fracturing, splitting] of the bread [loaf, food]. word study 36 While they were describing [talking about, sharing] these events [things, experiences], Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] Himself [personally, in His own presence] stood [appeared, was present] among [in the midst of, with] them and said, “Peace [harmony, inner calm, freedom from war] be with [to, upon] you [as a greeting, a blessing].” word study 37 But they were startled [terrified and affrighted] and frightened [afraid, filled with fear], thinking [supposing, having an opinion] they had seen [beheld, experienced] a spirit [the vital principle or mental disposition]. word study 38 “Why are you troubled [frightened, or alarmed],” Jesus asked, “and why do doubts [questionings, or reasonings] arise [come up, ascend, or stem] in your [minds, hearts, or inner beings] hearts? word study 39 Look at My hands [and the wounds in them] and My feet [as a proof of My physical presence]. It is I Myself [the resurrected Jesus, the same person]. Touch Me [handle Me, and see for yourself] and see—for a spirit [a being without a physical body] does not have flesh [the physical body] and bones [the skeletal structure], as you see I have [as a living, breathing person].” word study 40 And [also, in addition] when He had said [spoken, uttered] this [these words, this statement], He showed [exhibited, proved] them [to the disciples, His followers] His hands [as a sign of identity, with wounds] and [also, likewise] feet [as a proof of His resurrection, with scars]. word study 41 While they were [still in a state of unbelief, yet] still in disbelief [unable to trust their eyes] because of their [deep and lasting] joy and [great wonder, marveling at the miracle] amazement, He asked them, “Do you have [any food, something to eat] anything here [in this place, at this moment] to eat?” word study 42 So they gave Him [a portion] a piece of [cooked] broiled fish, word study 43 and He took [received, accepted] it and ate [consumed, shared a meal] it in front of [before, in the presence of] them [the disciples, His followers]. word study 44 Jesus said to them, “These are the words [I previously spoke, my former teachings] I spoke to you while I was still [yet, during my earthly ministry] with you: Everything [all things, every prophecy] must be fulfilled [completed, brought to pass] that is written [recorded, prophesied] about Me [concerning my life, death, and resurrection] in the Law [the writings, the Torah] of Moses [the Hebrew lawgiver], the Prophets [the messengers of God], and the Psalms [the sacred songs, the poetic writings].” word study 45 Then [at that specific point in time] He [Jesus, the Messiah] opened [revealed, expounded upon] their minds [intellect, understanding, thought] to understand [comprehend, grasp spiritually] the Scriptures [holy Writings, God’s written word, the Bible]. word study 46 And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ [Messiah, anointed one] will suffer [experience pain, undergo hardship] and rise [be resurrected, come back to life] from the dead [the state of being lifeless, spiritually or physically] on the third [following two days, a specific time] day [a 24-hour period, a significant time], word study 47 and in His name [the authority and character of Jesus] repentance [a change of heart, turning away from sin] and forgiveness [pardon, remission] of sins [missing the mark, falling short of God’s standards] will be proclaimed [preached, heralded] to all [every, including all nations] nations, beginning [commencing, starting] in Jerusalem [the city of God’s presence, the capital of Israel]. word study 48 You [directly addressed] are [exist as] witnesses [testifiers of what you have seen] of these [specific] things [events, experiences]. word study 49 And behold [look, see, and understand], I am sending [dispatching, setting apart] the promise [commitment, assurance] of My Father [the heavenly Father, God] upon you [to you, for your benefit]. But remain [stay, wait patiently] in the city [Jerusalem, the holy city] until you have been clothed [endued, empowered] with power [strength, ability] from on high [from heaven, from above].” word study 50 When Jesus had led [guided, directed] them out as far as [toward, into the vicinity of] Bethany [a village near Jerusalem], He lifted up [raised, elevated] His hands [as a symbol of blessing and authority] and blessed [praised, spoke well of] them [His disciples, followers]. word study 51 While He was blessing [praising, speaking well of] them, He left [departed from, was parted from] them and was carried [led, taken] up into [toward, into the realm of] heaven [the sky, God’s home]. word study 52 And they worshiped [with deep reverence, adoring] Him and returned [turned back, went back] to Jerusalem [the holy city, the capital of Palestine] with [accompanied by, filled with] great [intense, abundant] joy [a deep and lasting happiness], word study 53 praising [blessing and giving thanks to] God [the one true deity] continually [always, every day] in [within, among] the temple [the sacred place, the house of worship]. word study
