study 18 This is how the birth [origin, coming into being] of Jesus Christ [the Messiah, Anointed One] came about: His mother [parent, female caregiver] Mary [betrothed, pledged in marriage] was pledged in marriage [espoused, promised to marry] to Joseph, but before [prior to, sooner than] they came together [assembled, united as one], she was found [discovered, realized] to be with child intimidated] to embrace [take, receive] Mary as your wife, for the One conceived [begotten, formed] in her is from [of, originating from] the Holy Spirit [the divine presence, the Spirit of God]. word study 21 She will give birth to a [spiritual and physical] Son, and you are to give Him the name [meaning God is salvation] Jesus, because He will save [rescue, deliver from the consequences of] His people [a specific nation or group of believers] from their [missing the mark, falling short of God’s standards] sins [the principle of rebellion against God].” word study 22 All [everything, the entirety] this [this specific event] took place [came to pass, happened] to fulfill [complete, satisfy] what [everything that was spoken] the Lord [the supreme Master] had said [spoken, uttered] through [by means of, via] the prophet [one who speaks for God]: word study 23 “Behold [see, perceive, attend to], the virgin [unmarried, pure, chaste] will be with child [in her womb, pregnant] and will give birth to a son [a male child, a descendant], and they will call Him Immanuel [God with us, Emmanuel, having God’s presence]” (which means [being interpreted, translated], “God with us [in our midst, accompanying us]” ). word study 24 When Joseph [being raised from sleep] woke up, he did as the angel [messenger of God] of the Lord [God, the supreme authority] had commanded [ordered, instructed] him, and embraced Mary as his wife [Mary, his betrothed]. word study 25 But he had no [intimate] union [physical relationship, knew her not] with her until she gave birth [brought forth, produced] to a Son [firstborn, child]. And he gave Him [called, named] the name [character, authority] Jesus [God is salvation]. word study
