Mark 14
BSA1 Now the Passover [feast of unleavened bread, a week-long celebration] and the Feast of Unleavened Bread [a time of eating flat bread] were two days away, and the chief priests [high-priestly leaders, Jewish authorities] and scribes [scholars, teachers of the law] were looking for a covert [secret, surreptitious] way to arrest Jesus [by deceit, with cunning] and kill Him [take His life, destroy Him]. word study 2 “But not [at any time, especially] during the feast [festival, celebration],” they said, “or [lest, in case] there may be [a possibility of, a risk of] a riot [commotion, uproar, tumult] among [in the midst of, surrounded by] the people [a crowd, a nation, a group of individuals].” word study 3 While Jesus was in Bethany [a village near Jerusalem, a place of refuge] reclining at the table [seated for a meal, resting] in the home [the house, the dwelling place] of Simon the Leper [a man healed from leprosy, a former outcast], a woman came with an alabaster jar [a vase, a container] of expensive perfume [fragrant oil, costly ointment], made of pure [genuine, unadulterated] nard [a fragrant plant]. She broke open the jar [shattering the vessel, releasing the fragrance] and poured it on Jesus’ head [the seat of authority]. word study 4 Some of those present [who were there], however, expressed their [deep] indignation [anger, displeasure] to one another: “Why this [such great] waste [destruction, loss] of perfume [fragrant oil]? word study 5 It could have been sold [for a huge amount of money, a year’s wages] for over three hundred [above, more than] denarii [Roman coins, a day’s wage] and the money given [bestowed, granted] to the poor [needy, beggars].” And they scolded [rebuked, murmured against] her. word study 6 But Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] said, “Leave [release, let go of] her alone; why are you bothering [troubling, causing labor] her? She has done a [good, kind] beautiful deed [work, act] to Me [for my benefit]. word study 7 The poor [needy, impoverished] you will always [at all times, continually] have with you, and you can help [do good to, assist] them whenever [at any time, whensoever] you want [desire, choose]. But you will not always [at all times, continually] have Me [be with you, be present]. word study 8 She has done [to the best of her ability, what she was able] what she could [as an act of devotion, in anticipation] to anoint [apply perfumed oil to] My body [physical person] in advance [beforehand] of My burial [interment, preparation for death]. word study 9 And truly [verily, with certainty] I tell you, wherever [wheresoever, in every place] the gospel [good news, message of salvation] is preached [proclaimed, heralded] in all [throughout the whole] the world [creation], what she has done [this woman has accomplished, her actions] will also be told [spoken of, remembered] in memory [for a memorial, as a remembrance] of her [in her honor, for her sake].” word study 10 Then Judas [the man from Kerioth Town] Iscariot, one [a single individual, part of a unity] of the Twelve [apostles, chosen disciples], went to the chief priests [high-priest, top Jewish leaders] to betray [surrender, yield, or hand over] Jesus [the Messiah, Savior] to them [the authorities, Jewish leaders]. word study 11 They were delighted [glad, rejoiced] to hear this, and they promised [professed, gave their word] to give him money [silver, a payment]. So Judas began to look for an opportunity [a convenient time, a chance] to betray [deliver, hand over] Jesus. word study 12 On the first [initial, primary] day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread [a week-long celebration of bread without yeast], when the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed [offered to God, slain], Jesus’ disciples [learners, followers] asked Him, “Where [in what location] do You want us to prepare [make ready] for You to eat [partake of] the Passover [a commemoration of Israel’s escape from Egypt]?” word study 13 So He sent [dispatched on a mission] two of His disciples [learners, followers] and told them, “Go into [toward, enter] the city [a town with walls, a community], and a man [a human being] carrying [bearing, lifting] a jug [clay jar, pitcher] of water [literal or figurative, spiritual refreshment] will meet [encounter, come to] you. Follow [accompany, walk with] him [the one carrying the water], word study 14 and whichever house [wherever he may go] he enters, say to the owner [householder, master of the family], ‘The Teacher [Master, Rabbi] asks: Where is My guest room [lodging, place to stay], where I may eat [partake of, celebrate] the Passover [Jewish festival commemorating freedom] with My disciples [followers, learners]?’ word study 15 And he will show [take you up, himself guide] you a large [great, spacious] upper room [on the upper floor], furnished [with a table and seats] and ready [prepared, made available]. Make preparations [get ready, prepare] for us there [in that place, at that location].” word study 16 So the disciples [followers, learners] left and went into the city [Jerusalem, the holy city], where they found [discovered, came upon] everything as Jesus had described [spoken, told them]. And they prepared [made ready, arranged] the Passover [the Jewish festival, commemorating freedom]. word study 17 When [at the time of, in the evening hours] evening [nightfall, the end of the day] came, Jesus [the Messiah, the Savior] arrived [came, went] with [accompanied by, in the company of] the [specific, twelve in number] Twelve [twelve disciples, apostles]. word study 18 And while they were reclining [sitting at table, resting] and eating [consuming food, sharing a meal], Jesus [the Savior, God’s salvation] said, “Truly [verily, I assure you] I tell you, one [a single individual] of you who is eating [partaking, having fellowship] with Me [in My company, as My companion] will betray [deliver, surrender] Me.” word study 19 They began [to rule or commence] to be grieved [to cause sadness] and to ask Him one [in unity] after another, “Surely not I [the speaker themselves]?” word study 20 He answered [in response to their question], “It is [truly, indeed] one [a single individual, united with Me] of the Twelve [apostles, disciples]—the one [person, individual] who is dipping [immersing, sharing] his hand [as a symbol of fellowship] into the bowl [dish, platter] with Me [in My company, together]. word study 21 The Son of Man [the Messiah, God’s appointed Savior] will go [depart, be taken away] just as it is written [foretold, prophesied] about Him, but woe [deep sorrow, divine judgment] to that man [the one who betrays] by whom He is betrayed [handed over, surrendered]! It would be better [more desirable, advantageous] for him if he had not been born [had never existed, come into being].” word study 22 While they were eating [taking food, consuming], Jesus took [received, accepted] bread [loaf, food], spoke a blessing [praised, gave thanks] and broke [distributed, shared] it, and gave [bestowed, granted] it to the disciples, saying, “Take [receive, accept] it; this [the specific] is My [belonging to Me, I] body [physical person, whole being].” word study 23 Then He took [received, accepted] the cup [container for drinking], gave thanks [expressed gratitude, praised God], and gave [bestowed, granted] it to them [the disciples, His followers], and they all [every one of them, without exception] drank [swallowed, partook] from it [the cup, the covenant]. word study 24 He said to them, “This is My blood [the atoning sacrifice] of the covenant [a formal agreement], which is poured out [being shed] for many [a large multitude]. word study 25 Truly [verily, I assure you] I tell you, I will no longer [not anymore, never again] drink of the fruit [produce, offspring] of the vine [the grapevine] until that day [the future time, the day of the Lord] when I drink it [new, freshly, in a new way] anew [fresh, newly] in the kingdom [reign, dominion, rule] of God [the supreme deity, the Almighty].” word study 26 And [also, in addition] when they had sung [praised, worshiped with music] a hymn [psalm, song of praise], they went out [came out, departed] to [toward, into] the [this specific] Mount [hill, elevation] of [belonging to] Olives [olive trees, a place of spiritual significance]. word study 27 Then Jesus [the Messiah, God’s Anointed] said to them, “You will all [completely, every one of you] fall away [be offended, stumble], for it is written [in the Scriptures, as prophesied]: ‘I will strike [smite, knock down] the Shepherd [the guardian, caretaker of God’s people], and the sheep [God’s followers, the faithful] will be scattered [dispersed, thrown into confusion].’ word study 28 But [however, on the other hand] after I [me, the Messiah] have risen [from the dead, been made alive again] [after], I will go [proceed, lead the way] ahead of you [before your arrival, to precede] into [toward, in the direction of] Galilee [the region, district].” word study 29 Peter [the rock, a disciple of Jesus] declared [to assert, spoke boldly], “Even if [in the event that, although] all [every single one, everyone] fall away [are offended, stumble], I [as an individual, personally] never [at no time, under no circumstances] will [be faithful, remain loyal].” word study 30 “Truly [verily, with absolute certainty] I tell you,” Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] replied, “this very night [even in this night, before dawn], before the rooster [male chicken, a bird that crows] crows [to call, make a sound] twice [two times, on two occasions], you will deny [utterly refuse, disown] Me [I, the speaker, Jesus] three times [thrice, on three occasions].” word study 31 But Peter kept insisting [with passion, more vehemently], “Even if I have to die with [be killed together with] You, I will never [under no circumstances] deny [utterly refuse or disown] You.” And all [every one of] the others said the same thing [in like manner, likewise]. word study 32 Then they came [arrived, went] to a place [spot, location] called [named, known as] Gethsemane [the oil-press, a garden near Jerusalem], and Jesus told [said to, spoke to] His disciples [learners, followers], “Sit [be seated, rest] here [in this place, at this spot] while [until, till] I pray [worship, commune with God].” word study 33 He took with Him Peter [the rock, a disciple], James, and John, and began [to rule, commence] to be deeply [sore, greatly] troubled [amazed, distressed] and distressed [heavy, in great heaviness]. word study 34 Then He said to them, “My [the seat of emotions and desires] soul is consumed with [deeply sad or grieved] sorrow to the point of [until] death [physical or spiritual]. Stay [remain in a place or state] here [in this specific place] and keep watch [to stay awake or be vigilant].” word study 35 Going [forward] a little farther, He fell [upon the earth] to the ground [earth, soil] and prayed [to God, worshiping] that, if [able] it were possible [if it may be, if it be possible], the hour [a specific time, a season] would pass [away, by] from Him [away from, out of His presence]. word study 36 “Abba [dear Father, Papa], Father,” He said, “all things [everything, every circumstance] are possible [able to be done, within Your power] for You. Take [remove, lift away] this cup [a drinking vessel] from Me. Yet not what I will [desire, wish], but what You will [purpose, intend].” word study 37 Then Jesus returned [came back, went back] and found them sleeping [asleep, in a state of spiritual slumber]. “Simon [Peter, the rock], are you asleep [sleeping, resting]?” He asked [said, spoke]. “Were you not able [strong enough, empowered] to keep watch [stay awake, be vigilant] for one [a single, one hour of] hour [a specific time, a short period]? word study 38 Watch [stay awake, be vigilant] and pray [to God, worship Him] so that you will not enter [go into, be led into] into temptation [testing, trial]. For the spirit [the vital principle] is willing [eager, ready], but the body [flesh] is weak [feeble].” word study 39 Again [once more, and] He went away [to depart, to leave] and prayed [to worship, to ask of God], saying [speaking, uttering] the same thing [word, message, logos]. word study 40 And again [once more, for the second time] Jesus returned [to the place where they were, to check on them] and found them sleeping [asleep, in a state of spiritual slumber]—for their eyes [the windows of the soul, the organs of sight] were heavy [weighed down, burdened]. And they did not know [were unable to perceive, lacked understanding] what to answer [respond, reply] Him [the Lord, their Master]. word study 41 When Jesus [the Messiah, the Christ] returned the third time, He said, “Are you still [continually, persistently] sleeping [to fall asleep] and resting [to be refreshed]? That is enough [to have in full, to be satisfied]! The hour [a specific time, a season] has come [to arrive, to come into being]. Look [to see, to perceive], the Son [a child] of Man [of humanity, of human nature] is betrayed [to be handed over, to be surrendered] into the hands [power, authority] of sinners [those who miss the mark, the unrighteous]. word study 42 Rise [get up, stand], let us go [let’s be going, arise]. See [behold, perceive], My [I, the Messiah] betrayer [the one who delivers me up, who hands me over] is approaching [coming near, at hand, drawing closer]!” word study 43 While Jesus was still [yet, continuing to] speaking, Judas [a close disciple], one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd [great multitude, large group] armed with swords [short swords, daggers] and clubs [wooden staffs, staves], sent from the chief priests [high-priestly leaders], scribes [Jewish scholars, teachers of the law], and elders [respected community leaders]. word study 44 Now the betrayer [who was delivering him up, Judas] had arranged [given, previously agreed upon] a signal [an agreed sign, token] with them: “The One I [physically, as a sign of affection] kiss [show affection, greet] is the man; arrest [seize, take hold of] Him and lead [take away, guide] Him away [from this place, to another location] securely [safely, without harm, under guard].” word study 45 Going directly [immediately, straightway] to Jesus, he said [addressing Him with respect], “Rabbi [my master, teacher] [repeating the title, as a sign of reverence]!” and kissed [with strong affection, kissed affectionately] Him. word study 46 Then [at that moment, afterwards] the men [they, the crowd] seized [laid hands on, grasped] Jesus [the Messiah, the Christ] and [also, additionally] arrested [took, apprehended] Him [the Son of God, the Savior]. word study 47 And one [a certain individual, someone] of the bystanders [those standing by, onlookers] drew his sword [a short sword, dagger] and struck [hit, smote] the servant [slave, attendant] of the high priest [chief priest, spiritual leader], cutting off [removing, taking away] his ear [the entire ear, earlobe]. word study 48 Jesus asked the crowd, “Have you come out [as against a thief, like a robber] with swords [and short daggers] and clubs [wooden staffs] to arrest Me [seize, capture] as you would [treat] an outlaw [a rebel, a lawless person]? word study 49 Every day [daily, each day] I was with you [in your presence, among you], teaching [instructing, guiding] in the temple [sacred place, house of God] courts [outer areas, public spaces], and you did not arrest [seize, lay hands on] Me. But this has happened [occurred, taken place] that the Scriptures [holy writings, God’s word] would be fulfilled [completed, brought to pass].” word study 50 Then everyone [all the disciples, they all] deserted [left, forsook, abandoned] Him [Jesus, the Messiah] and fled [ran away, escaped, took flight]. word study 51 One [a certain] young man [a youth or attendant] who had been following [accompanied, walked behind] Jesus was wearing [clothed in, wrapped with] a linen [fine] cloth around his body [upon his nakedness, over his bare skin]. They [the young men] caught hold [grasped, seized] of him [the young man], word study 52 but he pulled free [left behind, casting off] of the linen cloth [fine linen] and ran away [fled, to escape] naked [without clothes, exposed]. word study 53 They led [took away, brought] Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] away to the high priest [chief religious leader], and all [every one of] the chief priests [top Jewish leaders], elders [respected community leaders, older men], and scribes [scholars, teachers of the law] assembled [came together, gathered]. word study 54 Peter [one of Jesus’ apostles] followed Him [afar off] at a distance, right into the courtyard [palace, open area] of the high priest [chief Jewish leader]. And he sat [was seated, in the company of] with the officers [servants, ministers] and warmed [heated, comforted] himself by the fire [in the light of the fire, near the flames]. word study 55 Now the chief priests [high-priest, top Jewish leaders] and the whole [complete, entire] Sanhedrin [council, Jewish governing body] were seeking [looking for, trying to find] testimony [evidence, witness] against Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] to put Him to death [kill, execute], but they did not find [discover, meet with] any [none, no one]. word study 56 For [because, since] many [a large number, numerous] bore [gave, spoke] false [lying, untrue] witness [testimony, evidence] against Jesus [the Messiah, Christ], but [although, though] their testimony [statements, accounts] was [existed, stood] inconsistent [not alike, contradictory, not equal] [not in agreement, disagreed]. word study 57 Then [certain, some of them] some men stood up [arose, got up to speak] and testified [bore false witness, gave false testimony] falsely [under oath, with false accusations] against Him [Jesus, the Messiah]: word study 58 “We heard Him say, ‘I [we, the speaker and others] will destroy [tear down, demolish] this man-made [hand-made, constructed by human hands] temple [a sacred place of worship], and in three [a specific number of] days I will build [construct, erect] another [different, a new one] that is made [created, constructed] without [not by] hands [human effort or skill].’” word study 59 But even [nor, neither] their testimony [witness, evidence] was [existed, to be] inconsistent [not in agreement, didn’t agree together] [like their witness, in this way]. word study 60 So the high priest [chief Jewish leader, supreme ruler of the temple] stood up [arose, got up from his seat] before them and questioned [asked, sought information from] Jesus, “Have You no answer [nothing to say, no response]? What are these men [witnesses, accusers] testifying against [bearing witness, speaking out] You [to your face, in your presence]?” word study 61 But Jesus remained silent [kept quiet, did not answer] and made no reply [did not speak, gave no response]. Again [once more, a second time] the high priest [chief priest, spiritual leader] questioned Him, “Are You the Christ [Messiah, Anointed One], the Son [offspring, descendant] of the Blessed One [praiseworthy God, Holy One]?” word study 62 “I am [the Eternal One, existing forever],” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man [the Messiah, God’s appointed King] sitting at the right hand [the position of authority and power] of Power [divine authority, God’s mighty strength] and coming with [accompanied by, surrounded by] the clouds [visible masses of water vapor] of heaven [the sky, God’s dwelling place].” word study 63 At this, the high priest [chief Jewish leader, supreme priest] tore [violently rent] his clothes and declared, “Why do we need [what further requirement have we] any more witnesses [testifiers, those who can attest to the truth]? word study 64 You have heard the blasphemy [speaking badly of God, slander] [to hear and understand]. What is your verdict [what think ye, what do you decide]?” And they all [every single one] condemned Him as [liable to be, guilty of] deserving of death [physical or spiritual, separation from God]. word study 65 Then some of them began to spit on Him [with contempt, in His face]. They blindfolded Him [to cover His face, hiding His identity], struck Him with their fists [beating, hitting], and said to Him, “Prophesy [speak under God’s inspiration, tell us what is to come]!” And the officers [servants, ministers] received Him with slaps in His face [striking, hitting with the palm of the hand]. word study 66 While Peter [the rock, a disciple of Jesus] was in the courtyard [palace, open area] below [under, downwards], one [a single, lone] of the servant girls [maidservant, female slave] of the high priest [chief priest, spiritual leader] came down [approached, drew near] word study 67 and saw him warming [heating himself, by the fire] himself there. She looked [gazed intently] at Peter and said, “You [as his follower, disciple] also were with [accompanied, in the company of] Jesus [Joshua, the Savior] the [from the city of] Nazarene [of Nazareth, the city of Jesus’ upbringing].” word study 68 But he denied [rejected, refused to acknowledge] it. “I do not know [am unaware, have no knowledge] or even understand [comprehend, perceive] what you are talking about [saying, speaking],” he said. Then he went out [departed, exited] to the gateway [entryway, forecourt], and the rooster [male chicken, cock] crowed [called out, made a loud sound]. word study 69 There the servant girl [maidservant, a female slave or servant] saw him and again [once more, a second time] said to those standing nearby [at hand, in close proximity], “This man [this one, he] is one of them [one of Jesus’s followers, one of His disciples].” word study 70 But he denied [rejected, said no to] it again. After a little while [a short time, briefly], those standing nearby [at hand, in close proximity] said once more [again, a second time] to Peter, “Surely [truly, certainly] you are one of them [a follower, a disciple], for you too [also, in like manner] are a Galilean [from Galilee, a region in Israel].” word study 71 But he began [to rule, commence] to curse [invoke a divine penalty] and swear [take an oath, vow under penalty], “I do not [completely, utterly] know [perceive, have spiritual awareness of] this man [human being, person] of whom [which, referring to] you speak [say, tell]!” word study 72 And immediately [at once, without delay] the rooster [male chicken, a bird known for its crowing] crowed [made a loud, harsh cry] a second time [again, for the second instance]. Then Peter remembered [recalled to mind, thought of again] the word [declaration, utterance] that Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] had spoken [said, uttered] to him: “Before [prior to, sooner than] the rooster [a male chicken] crows [makes a loud cry] twice [two times, on two occasions], you will deny [utterly refuse, disown] Me [I, the Messiah] three times [thrice, on three occasions].” And he broke down [was overcome, seized with emotion] and wept [cried out loud, mourned]. word study
