Mark 16

BSA

1 When the Sabbath [a day of rest, the seventh day of the week] was over, Mary Magdalene [from Magdala, a follower of Jesus], Mary [a devoted disciple] the mother of James, and Salome [a faithful follower] bought spices [sweet fragrant ointments, aromatic oils] so they could go and anoint [to put oil or perfume on, show respect and honor] the body of Jesus [the Messiah, the Son of God]. word study 2 Very early [at dawn, before sunrise] on the first day [one] of the week [Sabbath], just after [at the rising of] sunrise [the sun was risen], they went [came, to come] to the tomb [grave, sepulchre, place of remembrance]. word study 3 They were asking [saying among themselves, discussing] one another, “Who [which one, what person] will roll away [remove, take away] the stone [a large rock, a barrier] from the entrance [door, opening] of the tomb [sepulchre, grave, place of burial]?” word study 4 But when they looked up [gazed intently], they saw that the stone [a large rock, a significant obstacle] had been rolled away [removed, taken out of the way], even though it was [very] extremely large [great, of considerable size]. word study 5 When they entered [went into, stepped inside] the tomb [grave, place of remembrance], they saw [perceived, beheld] a young man [youth, attendant] dressed [clothed, arrayed] in a white [bright, clean] robe [long garment, dignified attire] sitting [seated, resting] on the right side [right hand, place of honor], and they were [became, experienced being] alarmed [amazed, awe-struck, terrified]. word study 6 But he said to them, “Do not be [utterly amazed or terrified] alarmed. You are looking for Jesus [from Nazareth] the Nazarene, who was [impaled on a cross] crucified. He has [been raised from the dead, arisen] risen! He is not here! See [look, behold] the place where they [laid, placed] put Him. word study 7 But [in contrast, on the other hand] go, tell His disciples [learners, followers] and Peter [the rock, a prominent apostle], ‘He is going ahead [proceeding, leading the way] of you into Galilee [a region in Palestine, Jesus’ ministry area]. There [in that place, at that location] you will see [perceive, experience] Him, just as [in the same way, according to] He told [spoken, commanded] you.’” word study 8 So the women left [quickly, fled] the tomb [sepulchre, grave] and ran away [from the place], trembling [with fear, quaking] and bewildered [amazed, in astonishment]. And in their fear [being afraid, having reverence] they did not say [utter, speak] a word [anything] to anyone [no one, nobody]. word study 9 Early [at dawn, in the morning] on the first day of the week, after Jesus had risen [been resurrected, come back to life], He appeared [was seen, became visible] first [initially, at the beginning] to Mary [a follower of Jesus, healed of seven demons] Magdalene [from Magdala, a town in Palestine], from whom He had driven out [expelled, cast away] seven demons [evil spirits, unclean beings]. word study 10 She went [to travel, journeyed] and told [announced, declared] those who had been with Him [accompanied, followed], who were [in a state of being] mourning [grieving, sorrowing] and weeping [crying out loud]. word study 11 And when they heard [and understood, to hear with faith] that Jesus [the Messiah, the Savior] was alive [living, having life] and she had seen [looked at, gazed upon] Him, they did not believe [disbelieved, had no faith in] it [the truth, the fact]. word study 12 After this [following these events, later that day], Jesus appeared [was revealed, manifested] in a different [another, altered] form [outward appearance] to two [a pair] of them as they walked [were traveling] along in the country [countryside, field, rural area]. word study 13 And they went back [to Jerusalem, to the remaining disciples] and reported [declared, announced] it to the rest [the remaining ones, those who were left], but they did not believe [trust, have faith in] them either [nor, neither, just like the others]. word study 14 Later [afterward, as they sat at meat], as they were eating, Jesus appeared [was manifested, revealed] to the Eleven [eleven apostles, special workers] and rebuked [upbraided, spoke sharp words to] them for their unbelief [lack of faith, disobedience] and hardness of heart [stubbornness, being unwilling to listen], because they did not believe [trusted, had faith in] those who had seen Him after He had risen [been raised, come back to life]. word study 15 And He said to them, “Go [travel, journey] into all [every, the whole] the world [the earth, creation] and preach [proclaim, herald] the gospel [good news, message of salvation] to every [all, entire] creature [being, creation]. word study 16 Whoever [he who] believes [has faith, trusts in] and is baptized [immersed in water, fully wet] will be saved [rescued, delivered from harm], but whoever [he who] does not believe [disbelieves, lacks faith] will be condemned [judged, found guilty, damned]. word study 17 And these signs [tokens, indications of divine power] will accompany [follow, go along with] those who believe [trust, have faith]: In My name [authority, character] they will drive out [expel, cast out] demons [evil spirits, unclean beings]; they will speak [utter words, proclaim] in new [fresh, previously unspoken] tongues [languages, dialects]; word study 18 they will pick up [take away, lift up] snakes [serpents, symbolizing sly cunning] with their hands, and if they drink any deadly [fatal] poison [deadly thing], it will not [in no way, absolutely not] harm them; they will lay their hands [place their hands, impart healing] on the sick [ailing, ill], and they will be made [completely, fully] well [recovered, healed].” word study 19 After the Lord [Master, God] Jesus [the Christ, Messiah] had spoken [uttered words, communicated] to them, He was taken up [received, lifted] into heaven [the sky, God’s dwelling place] and sat down [took His seat, was seated] at the right [the place of honor] hand of God [the Father, Almighty]. word study 20 And they went out [forth, departed] and preached [proclaimed, heralded] everywhere [in all places, to all people], and the Lord [God, Master] worked [cooperated, was at work] through them, confirming [establishing, guaranteeing] His word [message, divine utterance] by the signs [miracles, supernatural tokens] that accompanied [followed, came after] it. word study
