Mark 5
BSA1 On [the opposite side, across] the other side of the sea [a large body of water], they arrived [came to, reached] in [into, toward] the region [country, area] of [belonging to, related to] the Gerasenes [inhabitants of Gerasa, people from the city of Gerasa]. word study 2 As soon as Jesus got out of the boat [ship], He was met by a man with an unclean [impure] spirit [pneuma, the vital principle], who was coming from the tombs [graves, monuments]. word study 3 This man [who had his dwelling among the tombs] had been living [residing, dwelling] in the tombs [memorials, burial places] and could no longer [not even with great effort] be restrained [bound, tied up], even with chains [bonds, physical restraints]. word study 4 Though he was often [frequently, many times] bound with chains [fetters, iron bands] and shackles [restraints, bonds], he had broken [torn apart, shattered] the chains [bonds, fetters] and shattered [broken in pieces, crushed] the shackles [restraints, chains]. Now there was no one [nobody, none] with the strength [power, ability] to subdue [tame, control] him. word study 5 Night [and darkness, a time of suffering] and day [a 24-hour period, a time of light] in the tombs [places of burial, monuments] and in the mountains [high elevations, rugged terrain] he kept crying out [loudly, in anguish] and cutting himself [severely, with self-inflicted wounds] with stones [sharp rocks, a means of self-harm]. word study 6 When the man [from a distance, afar off] saw Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, God is salvation] from a distance [from afar], he ran [hastily] and fell [bowed down, worshipped] on his knees [in reverence] before Him [in respect]. word study 7 And he shouted [cried out, having called with a loud voice] in a loud voice, “What do You want [have to do] with me, Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation], Son [child, descendant] of the Most High [Highest, supreme] God [the one true deity]? I beg [adjure, implore] You before God [in God’s name, knowing God is listening] not to torture [torment, cause severe pain] me [I, myself]!” word study 8 For Jesus had already declared [to the evil spirit, saying], “Come out [exit, depart] of this man [human being, a person], you [thou, addressing the spirit directly] unclean [impure, morally defiled] spirit [the vital principle or mental disposition]!” word study 9 “What [which one] is your [personal, given] name [identity, character]?” Jesus [the Messiah, Savior] asked. “My name [designation, authority] is Legion [a large group, multitude],” he replied, “for [because, since] we [many evil spirits, a multitude] are [exist, have being] many [numerous, a large number].” word study 10 And he [earnestly, fervently] begged [pleaded with, comforted] Jesus [the Messiah, Savior] repeatedly [much, intensely] not [lest, God forbid] to send [dispatch, set apart] them [the evil spirits] out [outside, away from] of that region [country, territory]. word study 11 There [in that place, to that location] on the nearby [nigh unto, close to] hillside [mountain side, high elevation] a large [great, big] herd [group of animals, flock] of pigs [swine, hogs] was feeding [grazing, rooting for food, pasturing]. word study 12 So the demons [evil spirits, unclean spirits] begged Jesus, “Send us [allow us to go, permit us] to the pigs [swine, unclean animals], so that we may enter [go into, dwell in] them [the pigs, these animals].” word study 13 He gave them permission [allowed them to proceed], and the unclean [impure, morally defiled] spirits came out and went into the pigs [swine, unclean animals], and the herd [a large group of animals] of about two thousand [approximately 2000] rushed down the steep [sharp, precipitous] bank into the sea [a large body of water] and drowned [were choked, perished] in the water [the sea]. word study 14 Those tending [caring for, feeding] the pigs [swine, unclean animals] ran off [fled, escaped] and reported [announced, shared] this in the town [city, community] and countryside [fields, rural area], and the people went out [came forth, emerged] to see [perceive, understand] what had happened [occurred, taken place]. word study 15 When they came to Jesus [the Son of God, the Savior], they saw the man who had been possessed [under the power of evil spirits, demonized] by the legion [a large group of unclean spirits, a multitude of demons] of demons [unclean spirits, evil forces] sitting there, clothed [dressed, with his outer garment on] and in his right mind [sane, with a sound understanding]; and they were afraid [filled with awe, reverent fear]. word study 16 Those who had seen [witnessed, perceived] it described [told in detail, related fully] what had happened [occurred, came to pass] to the demon-possessed [under the power of an evil spirit, controlled by demons] man and also [in addition, furthermore] to the pigs [swine, unclean animals]. word study 17 And [also, in addition] the people began [to rule, commenced] to beg [plead, beseech] Jesus [the Messiah, Savior] to leave [go away, depart] their region [borders, territory, area of influence]. word study 18 As He was getting [climbing, stepping] into the boat [ship, vessel], the man [who had been delivered, set free] who had been possessed [demonized, under the power of evil spirits] by the demons [evil spirits, unclean spirits] begged [pleaded, asked earnestly] to go [be with, accompany] with Him [Jesus, the Master]. word study 19 But Jesus [the Lord, God’s salvation] would not allow him [to stay with Him]. “Go home [to your house, family] to your own people [friends, loved ones],” He said, “and tell them [report, announce] how much [just as, to the extent that] the Lord [God, Master] has done [accomplished, made] for you [on your behalf], and what mercy [compassion, pity] He has shown [had, demonstrated] you [toward you].” word study 20 So the man went away [departed, left the scene] and began [started, commenced] to proclaim [preach, publish, herald] throughout the Decapolis [Ten Cities region, a district in Syria] how much [just as, to what extent] Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] had done [accomplished, made] for him. And everyone [all men, the whole crowd] was amazed [marveled, full of wonder]. word study 21 When Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] had again [once more, a second time] crossed by boat [ship, vessel] to the other side [across the lake, to the opposite shore], a large [great, multitude] crowd gathered [gathering of people, assembly] around Him [surrounded, encircled] beside [near, adjacent to] the sea [large body of water, lake]. word study 22 A synagogue leader [ruler of the synagogue, chief] named Jairus [a significant Israelite figure] arrived, and seeing [perceiving, beholding] Jesus, he fell [collapsed, prostrated himself] at His feet [in reverence, as a sign of respect] word study 23 and pleaded with Him urgently [with strong emotion, intensely], “My little daughter [a term of endearment] is near death [at the point of death, extremely ill]. Please come [approach, draw near] and place Your hands [a symbol of power and healing] on her, so that she will be healed [made whole, restored to health] and live [have life, be saved, zese].” word study 24 So Jesus went [accompanied him, departed with him] with him, and a large [great, multitude of] crowd [throng, gathering of people] followed [pursued, came after] and pressed [thronged, pushed against] around Him [surrounding, enclosing]. word study 25 And a woman [a certain one, someone] was there who had suffered [been ill, had a flow] from bleeding [an issue of blood, discharge] for twelve [a dozen] years [a period of time, twelve cycles of seasons]. word study 26 She had borne [suffered greatly, undergone much] much agony [pain, distress, and hardship] under the care [treatment, attention] of many physicians [doctors, medical experts] and had spent [used up, expended] all she had [her entire resources, everything], but to no avail [without benefit, with no improvement]. Instead, her condition [state, situation] had only grown [become, progressed] worse [more severe, more evil]. word study 27 When the woman heard [perceived and understood] about [concerning] Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation], she came up [approached] through the crowd [a large group of people] behind [after] Him and touched [reached out to] His cloak [outer garment] [His clothing]. word study 28 For she kept saying [to herself, thinking], “If only [even if, and if] I touch [lay hands on, make contact with] His garments [clothes, robe, that is, the outer cloak, mantle], I will be healed [made whole, saved, restored to health].” word study 29 Immediately [at once, straightway] her bleeding [fountain of her blood, flow of blood] stopped [was dried up], and she sensed [felt, knew] in her body [physical person, whole being] that she was healed [cured, made whole] of her affliction [plague, disease, whip-like scourge]. word study 30 At once [immediately, without delay] Jesus was aware [perceiving in Himself, knowing deeply] that power [miraculous ability, divine strength] had gone out [proceeded from, originated from] from Him [out of His being, from His person]. Turning [reverting, changing direction] to the crowd [large group of people, multitude], He asked [said, spoke], “Who [which one, what person] touched [attached oneself to, made contact with] My garments [clothing, outer robe]?” word study 31 His disciples [learners, followers] answered, “You can see [perceive, behold] the crowd [multitude, throng] pressing in on [pushing against, thronging] You, and yet You ask [say, inquire], ‘Who [which one, who is it that] touched [reached out to, made contact with] Me?’” word study 32 But He [Jesus, the Messiah] kept looking around [to gaze, to perceive] to see [to perceive, to experience] who [the one, this person] had done [made, created, brought about] this [thing, act, miracle]. word study 33 Then the woman [fearing and trembling], knowing [perceiving, having spiritual awareness] what had happened [been done, come into being] to her, came [approached, drew near] and fell down [prostrated herself, fell at His feet] before Him [in reverence, with humility] trembling [shaking, quaking] in fear [awe, reverence], and she told [said, spoke] Him [to Jesus, the Master] the whole [all, entire] truth [reality, sincerity]. word study 34 “Daughter [thy child, a female descendant],” said Jesus, “your [thy] faith [trust, confidence in God] has healed [made whole, saved] you. Go [depart, go away] in peace [harmony, prosperity, freedom from war] and be free [whole, healed] of your [thy] affliction [disease, plague, scourge].” word study 35 While He was still [yet, at the same time] speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus [synagogue leader, ruler of the synagogue] arrived and said, “Your daughter [female child, descendant] is dead [has passed away, ceased to live]; why bother [trouble, harass] the Teacher [instructor, Master] anymore [any further, still]?” word study 36 But Jesus [immediately, without delay] overheard [heard and understood] their conversation [the words being spoken] and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid [do not fear, have no alarm]; just [only, merely] believe [trust, have faith].” word study 37 And He did not allow [suffer, permit] anyone [no man, none] to accompany [follow with, go along] Him except [save] Peter [the rock, a stone], James [son of Zebedee], and John [the beloved disciple] the brother [kinsman, fellow believer] of James. word study 38 When they arrived at the house [of the ruler, leader] of the synagogue leader [in charge of synagogue services], Jesus saw the commotion [tumult, uproar] and the people weeping [crying out loud, mourning] and wailing [shouting, lamenting] loudly [with great emotion, intensely]. word study 39 He went inside [into the house, to the scene] and asked, “Why all this commotion [tumult, ado] and weeping [crying out loud, lamentation]? The child [young one, damsel] is not dead [has not stopped living], but asleep [resting, in a state of temporary unconsciousness].” word study 40 And they laughed at Him [to scorn, in ridicule]. After He had put them all outside [having expelled them, sent them away], He took the child’s father [the male parent] and mother [the female parent, caregiver] and His own companions [those who were with Him, His disciples], and went in [entered, came into the presence of] to see the child [the young one, the daughter]. word study 41 Taking her [the child, the damsel] by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum [girl, arise, stand up]!” which means [being interpreted, to translate], “Little girl [child, damsel], I say [declare, command] to you, get up [arise, stand up, be raised]!” word study 42 Immediately [at once, without delay] the girl [young daughter, damsel] got up [arose, stood up] and began to walk around [walked, was walking]. She was twelve years old [of the age of twelve], and at once [straightway, instantly] they were utterly [completely, with great astonishment] astounded [amazed, astonished with a great amazement]. word study 43 Then Jesus gave strict [stern] orders that [no one, nothing] no one should know about this, and He told them to give her [something to eat, food] [in order to strengthen her, to nourish her] something to eat. word study
