1 Why, O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], do You stand [to stand in a strong sense, be firmly established] far off [at a distance, in a distant place]? Why do You hide [to conceal, be hidden from view] in times [moments, events, or periods] of trouble [adversity, distress, or vexation]? word study 2 In [haughty, arrogant] pride [exalting oneself, self-importance] the wicked [morally wrong, guilty of sin] pursue [hotly chase, persecute] the needy [afflicted, humble, weak]; let them be caught [seized, trapped] in the schemes [plots, devices] they devise [plan, contrive, imagine]. word study 3 For [because of this reason] the wicked [morally wrong, guilty of sin] man boasts [shines, celebrates] in the cravings [desires, longings] of his heart [soul, inner being]; he blesses [praises, honors] the greedy [covetous, seizing from others] and reviles [spurns, shows contempt] the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God]. word study 4 In his [great, lofty] pride [arrogance, haughtiness] the wicked [morally wrong, bad] man [person, individual] does not seek [inquire, search for] Him [the one true God]; in all [every, entire] his schemes [plots, plans, thoughts] there is [exists, is present] no [not any, none] God [Elohim, the supreme Creator]. word study 5 He is secure [firm, prosperous] in his ways [path, manner of life] at all times [every occasion, always]; Your lofty [high, exalted] judgments [justice, verdicts] are far from him [beyond his sight, out of his mind]; he sneers [puffeth, ridicules] at all [every one of] his foes [enemies, adversaries]. word study 6 He says [in his heart] to himself, “I will not be moved [shaken, unstable]; from age [generation] to age I am free of distress [adversity, trouble, bad].” word study 7 His mouth [lips, edge of speech] is full [completely filled, overflowing] of cursing [oaths, sworn statements], deceit [fraud, cheating], and violence [oppression, injury]; trouble [hard work, struggle] and malice [evil, wickedness] are under [beneath, hidden by] his tongue [language, words]. word study 8 He lies [sits, dwells, remains] in wait near the villages [small settlements, courts]; in ambush [hidden trap, secretly] he slays [kills, murders] the innocent [guiltless, morally clean]; his eyes [sources of sight] watch [treasure, store] in stealth [secretly, hiding] for the helpless [unfortunate, poor, afflicted]. word study 9 He lies in wait [secretly, like a lion in his den] like a lion in a thicket [a hidden lair, covert]; he lurks [ambush] to seize [catch, overtake] the oppressed [afflicted, humble, weak]; he catches [seizes, snares] the lowly [poor, helpless] in his net [a trap, snare, means of capture]. word study 10 They are crushed [beaten down, bruised] and beaten down [made low, disheartened]; the hapless [helpless, unfortunate] fall prey [are overcome, fall by] to his strength [mighty power, strong ones]. word study 11 He says [in his heart] to himself, “God [the Almighty, Elohim] has forgotten [is oblivious to, has mislaid]; He hides [conceals, covers] His face [presence, countenance] and never [not at all, will not] sees [looks after, provides for].” word study 12 Arise [take a stand, rise up], O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]! Lift up [raise, exalt] Your hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share], O God [El, the powerful one]! Do not [never, under no circumstances] forget [be oblivious to, mislay] the helpless [afflicted, humble, or weak, the poor, the oppressed]. word study 13 Why has the wicked [morally wrong, guilty of sin] man renounced [to spurn, scorn] God [Elohim, the supreme Being]? He says [to speak, command] to himself, “You will never [not at all] call me to account [require it, seek punishment].” word study 14 But You [the all-seeing God] have regarded [looked upon with care] trouble [hardship, affliction] and grief [sorrow, vexation]; You see [behold, observe] to repay [requite, avenge] it by Your hand [power, strength]. The victim [helpless, afflicted one] entrusts [commits, trusts] himself to You; You are [have been] the helper [defender, protector] of the fatherless [orphan, one without a father]. word study 15 Break [shatter, destroy] the arm [the arm as stretched out; strength, might, power] of the wicked [morally wrong, guilty of sin] and evildoer [bad, evil]; call him to account [seek out, pursue] for his wickedness [wrong, immoral actions] until [as long as, to the point that] none [nothing, no remainder] is left to be found [discovered, attained]. word study 16 The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] is King [ruling sovereign] forever [for all eternity, perpetually] and ever [without end]; the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples] perish [are destroyed, come to an end] from His land [territory, earthly domain]. word study 17 You have heard [listened with attention], O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], the desire [longing or craving] of the humble [poor or meek, afflicted ones]; You will strengthen [establish and make firm] their hearts [the seat of feelings, will, and intellect]. You will incline [cause to lean or bend] Your ear [the ability to hear and listen], word study 18 to vindicate [judge, avenge] the fatherless [orphan, child without a father] and oppressed [crushed, afflicted], that the men [human beings, mankind] of the earth [land, world] may strike terror [tremble, dread] no more [not again, never]. word study
