1 Why [for what reason, to what purpose] do the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples] rage [be in turmoil, tumultuously assemble] and the peoples [communities, large groups] plot [meditate, imagine] in vain [to no purpose, emptily, without result]? word study 2 The kings [rulers, monarchs] of the earth [land, territory] take their stand [station themselves, establish their position] and the rulers [princes, leaders] gather together [unite, assemble], against the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] and against His Anointed One [Messiah, chosen king]: word study 3 “Let us break [tear apart, separate from] Their chains [bonds, restraints] and cast away [throw off, reject] Their cords [ropes, bindings, like a halter].” word study 4 The One [dwelling in, enthroned upon] enthroned in heaven [the visible universe, the abode of God] laughs [in contempt, with derision]; the Lord [Adonay, the revered God] taunts [mocks, ridicules] them. word study 5 Then [at that time, in His wrath] He rebukes [speaks to, admonishes] them in His anger [burning anger, fierce wrath], and terrifies [vexes, troubles] them in His fury [sore displeasure, intense indignation]: word study 6 “I [the sovereign Lord] have installed [anointed, set, poured out] My King [royal ruler, monarch] on [upon, above, over] Zion [Jerusalem’s sacred hill], upon [on, above, over] My holy [set-apart, sacred] mountain [hill].” word study 7 I [as a scribe, to recount] will proclaim the decree [statute, divine law] spoken to Me by the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]: “You are [declared to be] My Son [a descendant, having God’s nature]; today [this day, at this moment] I have become [begotten, given you being] Your Father [in a father-son relationship]. word study 8 Ask [request, inquire of] Me, and I will make the nations [Gentiles, heathen] Your inheritance [possession, heritage], the ends [uttermost parts, remotest limits] of the earth [land, territory] Your possession [property, dominion]. word study 9 You will break [shatter, rule with absolute power] them with an iron scepter [of iron, strong metal]; You will shatter [dash, smash into pieces] them like [a potter’s vessel, fragile article] pottery [earthenware, fragile]. ” word study 10 Therefore [now, at this time] be wise [prudent, circumspect, thoughtful], O kings [royal rulers, monarchs]; be admonished [instructed, disciplined, corrected] [to receive warning or guidance], O judges [rulers, governors, vindicators] of the earth [land, territory, world]. word study 11 Serve [with reverence, in bondage to] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] with fear [reverence, respect, or awe], and rejoice [be glad, express joy] with trembling [quaking, anxiety, or fear of God]. word study 12 Kiss [touch, show reverence to] the Son [heir to the throne, the Chosen One], lest He be angry [enraged, breathe hard in displeasure] and you perish [be destroyed, lost] in your rebellion [way of life, manner of action], when His wrath [anger, fierce indignation] ignites [burns, is kindled] in an instant [quickly, in a little while]. Blessed [happy, joyful] are all who take refuge [seek protection, trust] in Him. word study
