Psalms 47

1 Clap [with joyful enthusiasm] your hands, all you peoples [nations, everyone]; shout [letting your voices go up, sing loudly] unto God [the Almighty, Creator] with a voice [joyful sound] of triumph [victory, joyful praise]. word study 2 How awesome [fearful, awe-inspiring] is the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] Most High [exceedingly great], the great [powerful, mighty] King [ruler, sovereign] over all [every, the entirety of] the earth [the land, the world]! word study 3 He subdues [leads, puts down] nations [peoples, Gentile nations] beneath us [under our authority, in subjection to us], and peoples [other peoples, the nations] under our feet [in subjection to us, under our dominion]. word study 4 He chooses [selects, sets apart] our inheritance [heritage, birthright] for us, the pride [excellency, glory] of Jacob [Israel], whom He loves [dearly, with affection]. Selah word study 5 God [the supreme Being] has ascended [gone up with triumph] amid shouts [a glad cry, joyful sound] of joy [rejoicing, jubilation], the LORD [Yehovah, the divine King] with the sound [blast, fanfare] of the horn [trumpet]. word study 6 Sing praises [hymns of adoration] to God [Elohim, the supreme Lord], sing praises; sing praises [joyful shouts, trumpet blasts] to our King [the sovereign ruler], sing praises [celebratory songs]! word study 7 For God [the supreme King, Elohim] is King [the sovereign Ruler, having all authority] of all the earth [the world, all creation]; sing [with understanding, make music] profound praises [with knowledge, from the heart] to Him [the one true God, worthy of worship]. word study 8 God [Elohim, the supreme Ruler] reigns [sits in sovereignty, has dominion] over the nations [heathen, all ethnic groups]; God is seated [sitteth, firmly established] on His holy [set apart, sacred] throne [seat of authority, throne of holiness]. word study 9 The nobles [rulers, princes] of the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples] have assembled [gathered together] as the people [descendants, followers] of the God [Elohim, the supreme God] of Abraham; for the shields [defenders, protectors] of the earth [the world, all creation] belong to God [the Almighty, sovereign Lord]; He is highly [greatly, greatly exalted] exalted. word study
