1 Therefore [then, as a consequence], since we have been [declared] justified [made right, righteous] through [by means of] faith [trust, confidence], we have [possess, experience] peace [harmony, reconciliation] with God [the one true deity] through [because of] our Lord [Master, Savior] Jesus [God is salvation] Christ [the Anointed One], word study 2 through whom [because of, by means of] we have gained access [been given admission, obtained entrance] by faith [trust, confidence] into this [specific, divine] grace [unmerited favor, loving-kindness] in which [this state, condition] we stand [are established, firmly positioned]. And we rejoice [take great joy, glory] in the hope [confident expectation, promise] of the glory [honor, praise] of God [the one true deity, Creator]. word study 3 Not only that [and not just this], but we also rejoice [glory, take pride] in our sufferings [tribulations, pressures], because we know [perceive, are aware] that suffering [tribulation, distress] produces [works out, brings about] perseverance [endurance, patiently waiting]; word study 4 perseverance [spiritual stamina, patient endurance], character [mature, proven, approved]; and character [experience, trial, approvedness], hope [confident expectation, trusting in God’s goodness]. word study 5 And hope [confident expectation, trust] does not disappoint [put to shame, bring shame] us, because God [the supreme Creator, Elohim] has poured out [shed abroad, lavished] His love [unconditional affection, agape] into our hearts [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions] through the Holy [set apart, sanctified] Spirit [the divine Breath], whom [the Helper, the Comforter] He has given [bestowed, granted] us. word study 6 For at just the right time [in due season, according to God’s plan], while we were still [yet, ongoing] powerless [weak, without strength], Christ [the Anointed One, Jesus] died [gave His life, passed away] for the ungodly [the wicked, those without God]. word study 7 Very rarely [hardly, with great difficulty] will anyone die [stop living, pass away] for a righteous [just, fair, and innocent] man, though for a good [beneficial, virtuous] man someone might possibly [perhaps, it may be] dare [be bold, have courage] to die [give their life, sacrifice themselves]. word study 8 But God [demonstrates, commends] proves His [own, unconditional] love [agape, affection] for us [toward us, in our direction] in this: While we were still [yet, ongoingly] sinners [sinful, rebellious], Christ [the Messiah, anointed one] died [passed away, gave His life] for us [on our behalf, in our place]. word study 9 Therefore, since we have now [at this present time, in this current era] been justified [declared righteous, made innocent] by His blood [the atoning sacrifice, the blood of Christ], how much more [to a greater degree, much more then] shall we be saved [rescued, delivered] from wrath [God’s strong anger, divine judgment] through Him [by means of Christ, through His sacrifice]! word study 10 For if, when we were [haters of God] enemies of God, we were reconciled [made at peace, changed from a state of enmity] to Him through the death [physical and spiritual] of His Son, how much more [to a greater degree], having been reconciled [changed from a state of enmity to one of friendship], shall we be saved [delivered from harm, healed] through His life [physical and spiritual existence, eternal union with God]! word study 11 Not only that [in addition to this], but we also rejoice [glory, boast] in God [the one true deity] through our Lord Jesus Christ [the Messiah, God’s anointed], through whom [because of, by means of] we have now [at this present time] received [accepted, taken] reconciliation [restoration of a relationship, atonement, peace with God]. word study 12 Therefore, just as [through the disobedience of] sin entered the world [of humanity] through one man [Adam, the first human], and death [physical and spiritual separation from God] through sin, so also death was passed on to all men [every human being], because all [mankind] sinned [missed the mark, fell short of God’s standard]. word study 13 For [because of this reason] sin [missing the mark, falling short of God’s standards] was in [present and active among] the world [the orderly arrangement of creation, human society] before [prior to, until] the law [a set of rules or regulations, God’s instruction] was given; but [however, on the other hand] sin [transgression, rebellion against God] is not [never, under no circumstances] taken into account [imputed, reckoned, or attributed] when [in the situation where] there is [exists, is present] no [absence of, none] law [regulation, standard]. word study 14 Nevertheless, death [physical and spiritual separation from God] reigned [exercised dominion, held power] from Adam [the first man] until Moses, even over those who did not sin [miss the mark, fall short] in the way that Adam transgressed [disobeyed, rebelled against God’s will]. He is a pattern [a figure, a model] of the One to come [the future Messiah, Jesus Christ]. word study 15 But the gift [free gift, divine gratuity] is not like the trespass [unintentional error, sin]. For if the many [large crowd, multitude] died by the trespass [offense, misdeed] of the one man [a human, Adam], how much more did God’s [the supreme Creator’s] grace [graciousness, divine influence] and the gift [spiritual endowment, gift of salvation] that came by the grace [graciousness, kindness] of the one man, Jesus Christ [the Messiah, God’s anointed], abound [exceed, superabound] to the many [numerous, abundant]! word study 16 Again, the gift [free gift, divine gratuity] is not like the result of the one man’s sin [the sin of Adam, disobedience]: The judgment [verdict, condemnation] that followed one sin [a single transgression] brought condemnation [guilty verdict, penalty], but the gift [spiritual endowment, unmerited favor] that followed many trespasses [unintentional errors, willful sins] brought justification [righteousness, acquittal]. word study 17 For if, by the trespass [unintentional error, sin] of the one man, death [physical and spiritual separation from God] reigned [exercised dominion, ruled] through that one man, how much more [to a greater extent, abundantly] will those who receive [accept, take hold of] an abundance [excess, overflowing] of grace [unmerited favor, divine influence] and of the gift [free gift, unearned] of righteousness [right standing with God, justification] reign [rule, have authority] in life [eternal, spiritual existence] through the one man, Jesus [God is salvation, the Messiah] Christ [the Anointed One, Savior]! word study 18 So then, just as one [single, solitary] trespass [unintentional error, sin] brought condemnation [guilty verdict, penalty] for all men [humanity, every person], so also one act of righteousness [righteous deed, justifying act] brought justification [being made right with God, declared righteous] and life [eternal, spiritual existence] for all men [mankind, every human being]. word study 19 For just as [in the same way, exactly like] through the disobedience [refusal to obey, rebellion] of the one man [a human, Adam] the many [a large crowd, numerous people] were made sinners [wrongdoers, guilty ones], so also through the obedience [submission, compliance] of the one man [a human, Jesus] the many [a large crowd, numerous people] will be made righteous [just, innocent, having God’s approval]. word study 20 The law [a set of divine rules] came in [additionally, to make sin obvious] so that the trespass [unintentional error, sin] would increase [abound, become more prevalent]; but where sin [missing the mark, falling short of God’s standards] increased [abounded, became more widespread], grace [divine influence and favor] increased [abounded, overflowed] all the more [exceedingly, to a greater degree], word study 21 so that, just as [exactly like, in the same way] sin [missing the mark, falling short of God’s standards] reigned [ruled, had authority] in [resulting in, leading to] death [physical or spiritual separation from God], so also [in the same manner, likewise] grace [divine influence, unmerited favor] might reign [rule, have authority] through [because of, by means of] righteousness [living according to God’s will, being in right standing with God] to [resulting in, leading to] bring eternal [lasting forever, endless] life [physical and spiritual existence, fellowship with God] through [by means of, because of] Jesus Christ [the Anointed One, God’s Son] our Lord [Master, Savior]. word study
