John 4

Worsley

1 Therefore when the Lord knew, the pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but his disciples,) 3 He left Judea, and departed again into Galilee. 4 And as He must pass through Samaria, He came to a Samaritan city called Sichar, 5 near the piece of ground which Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 And Jacob’s well was there. Now Jesus was tired with journey, and sat down at the well: it was about the sixth hour 7 a woman of Samaria coming to draw water, Jesus saith unto her, 8 (For his disciples were gone away to the city to buy food.) 9 But the Samaritan saith unto Him, How is it that thou who art a Jew askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan? for the Jews have no intercourse with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, 11 The woman saith unto Him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou the living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, 15 The woman saith unto Him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw. 16 Jesus saith unto her, 17 The woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus saith unto her, 19 The woman saith unto Him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, and ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where ought to worship. 21 Jesus saith unto her, 22 we worship what we know: for salvation is from the Jews.} 25 saith the woman unto Him, I know that Messiah, that is to say Christ, is coming; when He comes, He will tell us all 26 Jesus saith unto her, } 27 And upon this came his disciples and wondered that He talked with the woman: (though none said, What dost thou seek? or, Why dost thou talk with her?) 28 therefore the woman left her water-pot, and went away into the city, 29 and saith to the people, Come, see a man who hath told me all that ever I did; is not this the Christ? 30 They therefore went out of the city, and came to Him. 31 In the mean time his disciples addressed Him, saying, Master, eat. 32 But He said unto them, 33 Therefore the disciples said one to another, Hath any one brought Him to eat? 34 Jesus saith unto them, 35 cometh harvest? Behold, lift up your eyes, and see the fields, they are already white for harvest.} 36 fruit together unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together;} 38 I have sent you to reap which ye have not laboured: others have laboured, and ye are entered into their labors.} 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on Him, because of what the woman said, testifying, He told me all that ever I did. 40 Therefore when the Samaritans came to Him, they desired Him to stay with them: and He staid there two days. 41 And many more believed on account of his own discourse: 42 and said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of what thou hast spoken; for we ourselves have heard and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. 43 And after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee. 44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet hath no honor in his own country. 45 And when He was come into Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all that he did in Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went to the feast. 46 Therefore Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where He had made the water wine. 47 And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum: who, when he heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, went to Him, and intreated Him, that he would come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 Jesus therefore said unto him, 49 The nobleman saith unto Him, Lord, come down before my child die. 50 Jesus saith unto him, And the man believed what Jesus said unto him, and went 51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told saying, Thy son is well. 52 He inquired therefore of them the hour in which he grew better: and they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. 53 So the father knew that in that hour, in which Jesus said to him, And he and his whole family believed. 54 This the second miracle Jesus wrought, coming out of Judea into Galilee.
