Luke 3
Worsley1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Trachonitis, 2 and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, Annas and Caiaphas being high priests, the word of God came unto John the Son of Zacharias in the wilderness: 3 and he went into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance in order to the remission of sins; 4 as it is written in the book of Esaias the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight: 5 every valley shall be raised, and every mountain and hill shall be lowered, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth: 6 and all men shall see the salvation of God." 7 Therefore said he to the multitudes that came to be baptised by him, generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits becoming penitents, and do not say within yourselves, “We have Abraham for our father,” for I tell you that God can of these stones raise up children to Abraham. 9 And now the ax is laid to the root of the trees: every tree therefore which doth not yield good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire. 10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? 11 And he saith unto them, Let him that hath two coats, give to him that hath none, and let him that hath food do the like. 12 And there came publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? 13 And He said unto them, Exact no more than is appointed you. 14 And the soldiers also asked him, saying, And what shall we do? and He said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse falsely, and be content with your pay. 15 Now as the people were in suspense, and were all thinking in their hearts concerning John, whether he were the Christ 16 John answered and said to all, I indeed baptize you with water; but a mightier than I is coming, whose shoes I am not worthy to untie: He will baptize you with the holy Spirit, and with fire; 17 whose fan is in his hand, and He will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather the wheat into his granary, but will burn up the chaff in unquenchable fire. 18 And many other by way of exhortation did he preach unto the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch being reproved by him on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the wicked which Herod did, 20 added this likewise to all that he shut up John in prison. 21 Now, when all the people were baptized, and Jesus was baptized and praying, 22 the heaven was opened, and the holy Spirit descended in a corporeal form, like a dove upon Him, and there came a voice from heaven saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased. 23 And Jesus was about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) son of Joseph, the of Heli, 24 the of Matthat, the of Levi, the of Melchi, 25 the of Janna, the of Joseph, the of Mattathias, the of Amos, the of Naum, the of Esli, 26 the of Naggai, the of Maath, the of Mattathias, the of Semei, the of Joseph, the of Juda, 27 the of Joanna, the of Rhesa, the of Zorobabel, the of Salathiel, the of Neri, the of Melchi, 28 the of Addi, the of Kosam, the of Elmodam, 29 the of Er, the of Joses, the of Eliezer, the of Jorim, the of Matthat, the of Levi, 30 the of Simeon, the of Juda, the of Joseph, the of Jonan, the of Eliakim, 31 the of Melea, the of Menan, the of Mattatha, 32 the of Nathan, the of David, the of Jesse, the of Obed, the of Booz, the of Salmon, 33 the of Naasson, the of Aminadab, the of Aram, the of Esrom, the of Phares, 34 the of Juda, the of Jacob, the of Isaac, the of Abraham, the of Thara, the of Nachor, 35 the of Saruch, the of Ragau, the of Phalec, the of Heber, the of Sala, the of Cainan, 36 the of Arphaxad, the of Sem, the of Noe, 37 the of Lamech, the of Mathusala, the of Enoch, the of Jared, the of Maleleel, the of Cainan, 38 the of Enos, the of Seth, the of Adam, the of GOD.
