1 Now when He had finished his discourse in the audience of the people, He entered into Capernaum: and a certain centurion’s servant, 2 whom he had a great value for, was ill and ready to die; 3 and having heard of Jesus, he sent unto Him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that He would come and heal his servant. 4 And when they came to Jesus, they intreated Him earnestly, saying, he is worthy of this favor: 5 for he loveth our nation, and hath built us a synagogue. 6 So Jesus went with them. And when He was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying Lord, trouble not thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: 7 neither did I think myself worthy to come unto thee. But speak the word, and my servant will be recovered. 8 For I also am a man placed under authority and have soldiers under me; and I say to one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doth 9 And when Jesus heard these He marvelled, and turning said to the multitude that followed Him, 10 And when they that were sent, returned to the house, they found the servant well, that had been sick. 11 And the day after He went to a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with Him, and a great multitude 12 and as He came near to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carrying out his mother’s only son, and she a widow: and many people of the city were with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, He was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, 14 And He came up and touched the bier, (and the bearers stopped,) and He said, 15 And the dead sat up, and began to speak: and He delivered him to his mother. 16 And an awe seized all, and they glorified God, saying, a great prophet is risen up among us, and God hath visited his people. 17 And this report of Him was spread through all Judea, and in all the country about. 18 And the disciples of John told him of all these things: so John called two of his disciples to 19 and sent to Jesus, saying, Art thou He that to come, or are we to expect another? 20 And the men came to Him, and said, John the baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou He that to come, or are we to expect another? 21 (Now at that very time He cured many of their diseases and plagues, and of evil spirits, and gave sight to many blind.) 22 And Jesus answering said unto them, } 23 in me.} 24 When the messengers of John were departed, He began to speak unto the people concerning John, 25 in fine clothes and live delicately, are in palaces, but what went ye out to see?} 27 of whom it is written, “Behold I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee:”} 28 among the sons of men there is not a greater prophet than John the baptist: (though the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he:)} 29 —and all the people that heard even the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John; 30 but the pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God within themselves, and were not baptized by him.— 32 market-place, and calling to one another, and saying, “We have played tunes to you, and ye have not danced; we have sung mournful ones and ye have not wept:”} 34 and ye call Him a gluttonous man and a wine bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners.} 36 And one of the pharisees asked Him to eat with him: and He went into the pharisee’s house, and sat down. 37 And behold a woman in the city, that was a sinner, when she knew that He was at table in the pharisee’s house, 38 brought an alabaster- of ointment, and stood at his feet behind Him, weeping, and washed his feet with tears, and wiped with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed with the ointment. 39 But when the pharisee that invited Him saw he said within himself, This if he were a prophet, would have known who and what sort of a woman that toucheth Him; for she is a sinner. 40 And Jesus said unto him, (and he replied, Master, say ) 41 five hundred denaries, and the other fifty:} 42 he freely forgave them both: tell therefore, which of them will love him most?} 43 And Simon answered, I suppose to whom he forgave most. And said unto him, 44 and turning to the woman, He said to Simon, thou gavest me no water for my feet; but she has bathed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.} 45 a kiss; but this woman, ever since she came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet.} 46 oil, but she hath anointed my feet with ointment.} 47 many are forgiven, for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, loveth little.} 48 And He said unto her, 49 And they that sat at table with Him, said within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? 50 But He said to the woman,
