1 Chronicles 11:38 Summary

This verse, 1 Chronicles 11:38, lists two men, Joel and Mibhar, who were part of David's mighty men, a group of brave warriors who fought alongside King David. Just like these men, we can trust in God's sovereignty and plan for our lives, as seen in Romans 8:28-30, and be part of a community of believers, working together for a common purpose, as discussed in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31. By looking at the examples of Joel, Nathan, and Mibhar, we can learn to be brave, loyal, and trusting in God, just like they were, and apply these principles to our daily lives, as seen in 2 Samuel 23:8-39 and Ephesians 4:1-16.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 11:38

Joel the brother of Nathan; either, 1. The same who is called Jaal the son of Nathan of Zobah, being possibly his brother by birth and nature, and called his son by adoption, or right of succession to his estate, or called his brother at large for his near kinsman, and his son for his nephew. Or, 2. Another, who, upon the death of the former, was put in his stead.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 11:38

(38) Joel the brother of Nathan.—Samuel, “Jigal (a name found in Numbers 13:7) son of Nathan of Zobah.” This is probably correct. Zobah was a Syrian state. Mibhar the son of Haggeri.—“Mibhar” (choice) is unlikely as a proper name, and is probably a corruption of Miçcobah, “of Zobah,” as in Samuel. After this word Samuel adds “Bani the Gadite.” The name “Bani” has fallen out of our text. “Haggeri” is an easy corruption of Haggadi “the Gadite.”

Cambridge Bible on 1 Chronicles 11:38

38. Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar] Mibhar is a corruption of a word (“of Zobah”) belonging to the first clause of the verse; cp. 2 Samuel 23:36, “Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah.” For “Zobah” cp. 1 Chronicles 18:3. the son of Haggeri] In 2 Sam. “Bani the Gadite.”
