1 Chronicles 21:9 Summary

This verse shows how God communicated with King David through a prophet named Gad. God was about to give David a choice of punishments for his sin of taking a census, as seen in 1 Chronicles 21:1-8. It's a reminder that God is involved in our lives and wants us to make good choices, like He did with Adam in Genesis 2:16-17. By listening to God's instructions, we can avoid mistakes and follow His plan for our lives, as encouraged in Proverbs 3:5-6.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Gad and what was his role in the Bible?

Gad was a prophet and seer in the Bible, often serving as a messenger of God to King David, as seen in 1 Chronicles 21:9, and other instances like 1 Samuel 22:5 and 2 Samuel 24:11-14.

What does it mean for God to 'instruct' someone in the Bible?

When the Bible says God 'instructed' someone, like in 1 Chronicles 21:9, it means God gave them a direct command or message, similar to how God spoke to prophets like Isaiah in Isaiah 6:8-10 or Ezekiel in Ezekiel 2:1-3:11.

Why did God use prophets like Gad to communicate with leaders like David?

God used prophets to communicate with leaders to guide them in making righteous decisions and to convey His will, as seen in Deuteronomy 18:15 and Numbers 12:6, emphasizing the importance of obedience to God's word.

How does this verse relate to the broader context of David's life and reign?

This verse is part of the story of David's sin in taking a census, which is a significant event in his life, as seen in 1 Chronicles 21:1-8, and reflects the ongoing theme of God's mercy and justice, as discussed in Psalms like Psalm 51:1-19, which David wrote after this event.

Reflection Questions

  1. What role do you think God wants to play in guiding your decisions, and how can you be more open to His instruction like Gad was?
  2. How does knowing that God communicates through various means, including prophets and scripture, impact your daily walk with Him?
  3. In what ways can you apply the principle of seeking God's guidance before making significant decisions, as seen in David's experience?
  4. What does this verse teach about the importance of humility and acknowledging one's mistakes, as David did after his sin was pointed out?

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 1 Chronicles 21:9

And the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying, The Lord spake unto Gad, David's seer.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 21:9

(9) And the Lord (Jehovah) spake unto Gad.—Samuel, “And David arose in the morning. Now a word of Jehovah had come to Gad the prophet, a seer of David, saying—“ This appears to be more original than our text. David’s seer.—Better, a seer of David’s, for the same title is applied to Heman (1 Chronicles 25:5). For Gad, see 1 Samuel 22:5, and 1 Chronicles 29:29. From the latter passage it has been inferred that it was Gad who wrote the original record of the census.

Cambridge Bible on 1 Chronicles 21:9

9. And the Lord spake] The historian now retraces his steps to describe the circumstances which heralded the approach of the plague. Gad] He is three times mentioned in Chron., each time as a “seer,” viz. 1 Chronicles 21:9 (= 2 Samuel 24:11); 1 Chronicles 29:29; 2 Chronicles 29:25. He was perhaps an older contemporary of Nathan, who bears the more modern title of “prophet” (cp. 1 Samuel 9:9).
