1 Chronicles 7:32 Summary

This verse tells us about Heber's family, including his sons Japhlet, Shomer, and Hotham, and their sister Shua. It reminds us that families are important to God, as seen in Exodus 20:12 and Psalm 127:3-5. Just like Heber's family, our families are a part of God's bigger plan, as explained in Genesis 12:2 and Ephesians 3:15. By learning about these families in the Bible, we can understand more about God's love for us and how He wants us to live, as taught in 1 Timothy 5:8 and Matthew 19:4-6.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Heber in 1 Chronicles 7:32?

Heber is the son of Beriah, as mentioned in 1 Chronicles 7:31, and the father of several children listed in 1 Chronicles 7:32, including Japhlet, Shomer, Hotham, and their sister Shua.

What can we learn from the genealogies in 1 Chronicles?

The genealogies in 1 Chronicles, such as the one in 1 Chronicles 7:32, remind us of the importance of family and heritage, and how God works through generations, as seen in Psalm 78:4 and Exodus 20:12.

Why are the daughters mentioned in these genealogies?

The daughters, such as Shua in 1 Chronicles 7:32 and Serah in 1 Chronicles 7:30, are included to show that they are also part of the family and have a role in the history of God's people, as seen in the example of the daughters of Zelophehad in Numbers 27:1-11.

How does this verse fit into the larger story of the Bible?

1 Chronicles 7:32 is part of the historical account of the Israelites, showing how God fulfilled His promises to Abraham, as stated in Genesis 12:2 and Genesis 15:5, and set the stage for the coming of Jesus Christ, as prophesied in Isaiah 11:1 and Luke 3:23-38.

Reflection Questions

  1. What can I learn from the way Heber's children are listed in this verse, and how can I apply that to my own family?
  2. How does knowing my own family history and heritage help me understand God's plan for my life, as seen in Psalm 16:5-6 and Acts 13:22-23?
  3. In what ways can I, like Heber, be a faithful parent and leave a lasting legacy for my children, as encouraged in Proverbs 22:6 and Ephesians 6:4?
  4. What role do I think Shua, Heber's daughter, played in the family, and what can I learn from her example, as seen in the stories of other biblical women like Deborah in Judges 4:4 and Esther in Esther 4:13-14?

Gill's Exposition on 1 Chronicles 7:32

And Heber,.... The other grandson of Asher; and son of Beriah; begat Japhlet, and Shomer, and Hotham, and Shuah their sister; a place on the borders of Ephraim is called the coast of Japhleti; but

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 1 Chronicles 7:32

And Heber begat Japhlet, and Shomer, and Hotham, and Shua their sister. No JFB commentary on these verses.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 7:32

(32-34) The race of Heber (spelt differently from Heber, Abraham’s ancestor). Nothing is known of any of these families. The name Japhleti (the Japhletite) occurs as a clan (Joshua 16:3), but far away from the bounds of Asher.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 7:32

Verse 32. And Shua their sister.] It is very rarely that women are found in the Jewish genealogies, and they are never inserted but for especial reasons.

Cambridge Bible on 1 Chronicles 7:32

The treatment of different tribes is unequal in this chapter. In the case of Issachar (1 Chronicles 7:1-5), Benjamin (1 Chronicles 7:6-12), and Asher (1 Chronicles 7:30-40), genealogies are given and the number of fighting-men of each tribe is stated. To Naphtali is devoted a single verse, giving only the names of his sons. For Manasseh and Ephraim genealogies are given and their possessions are shortly enumerated. The mention of Dan is obliterated, owing to the state of the text of 1 Chronicles 7:12.
