1 Samuel 3:8 Summary
In this verse, Samuel thinks Eli is calling him again, but Eli realizes it's actually the Lord calling Samuel. This shows that Samuel is still learning to hear God's voice and understand His call. As we see in 1 Samuel 3:9-10, Eli helps Samuel learn to respond to God's call by saying 'Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.' This teaches us to be attentive to God's voice and to respond with humility and obedience, as seen in Psalms 119:145, where David expresses his desire to hear and follow God's commands.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Samuel keep thinking Eli was calling him?
Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him, as stated in 1 Samuel 3:7, so he naturally assumed it was Eli calling him.
How did Eli finally realize it was the Lord calling Samuel?
After the third time the Lord called Samuel, Eli realized it was the Lord calling the boy, as stated in 1 Samuel 3:8, likely due to the repetition of the call and Samuel's consistent response.
What can we learn from Eli's response to Samuel's confusion?
Eli's response teaches us the importance of discerning God's voice and guiding others in their spiritual journey, as seen in 1 Samuel 3:9-10, where Eli instructs Samuel on how to respond to the Lord's call.
How does this verse relate to the concept of hearing God's voice?
This verse highlights the idea that hearing God's voice is a process that requires patience, discernment, and guidance, as seen in 1 Samuel 3:8-10, and is supported by other scriptures such as Psalms 119:145, where David expresses his desire to hear God's voice and follow His commands.
