2 Chronicles 24:1 Summary

This verse tells us about a young king named Joash, who was only seven years old when he became king, and his mother's name was Zibiah. It's remarkable to think about a child becoming a king, but it shows us that God can use anyone, regardless of age, to accomplish His plans, as we see in the story of Samuel in 1 Samuel 3:1-14. Joash's long reign of forty years suggests that God blessed his leadership, and we can learn from his example about trusting in God's sovereignty, as encouraged in Romans 8:28. By looking at Joash's story, we can be reminded that God is always in control, even when we face challenges or uncertainties, and we can trust in His goodness and wisdom, as promised in Psalm 100:5.

Frequently Asked Questions

How could a seven-year-old boy become king?

In biblical times, it was not uncommon for young children to inherit thrones, as seen in the case of Joash in 2 Chronicles 24:1, and this was often the result of the previous king's death or removal, highlighting God's sovereignty in the affairs of nations, as stated in Proverbs 21:1.

What role did Joash's mother, Zibiah, play in his life and reign?

While the Bible does not provide extensive details about Zibiah, her mention in 2 Chronicles 24:1 suggests she may have had some influence on Joash, especially during his early years as king, similar to the influence of Lemuel's mother in Proverbs 31:1-9.

Is it significant that Joash reigned for forty years?

Yes, the length of a king's reign often signified stability and divine blessing, as seen in the cases of Saul and David, who also reigned for forty years, as mentioned in Acts 13:21 and 1 Samuel 27:6, respectively.

How does this verse relate to the overall narrative of 2 Chronicles?

This verse introduces the reign of Joash, which is a pivotal part of the larger narrative of the kings of Judah, highlighting God's faithfulness to His people despite their sin, as seen in the rest of 2 Chronicles, and pointing forward to the ultimate King, Jesus Christ, as prophesied in Isaiah 9:7.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does Joash's young age at the beginning of his reign reveal about God's power and wisdom?
  2. How might Joash's relationship with his mother, Zibiah, have shaped his understanding of God and his role as king?
  3. In what ways can we, like Joash, trust in God's sovereignty and guidance, even in uncertain or challenging circumstances, as encouraged in Psalm 23:4 and Jeremiah 29:11?
  4. What are some ways we can apply the principle of trusting in God's sovereignty, as seen in Joash's story, to our own lives and decisions, as taught in Proverbs 3:5-6?

2 CHAPTER 24 Joash reigneth well all the days of Jehoiada, . He dieth; is buried honourably; and Joash falleth to idolatry; slayeth Zechariah the son of Jehoiada, . He is spoiled by the Syrians; slain by Zabad and Jehozabad: Amaziah succeedeth him, . A great part of this chapter is explained on 2Ki 12.

Trapp's Commentary on 2 Chronicles 24:1

It is said of the Irish, that the love of foster brothers amongst them far surpasses all the loves of all men. Camden’ s Elisab.

Ellicott's Commentary on 2 Chronicles 24:1

XXIV. REIGN OF JOASH. (Comp. 2 Kings 12) OF BEN . The Ascendancy of the High Priest Jehoiada. Repair of the Temple (2 Chronicles 24:1-14). (1) Joash was seven years old.—This verse coincides with 2 Kings 12:1-2, merely omitting the note that his accession took place “in the seventh year of Jehu.” There he is called Jehoash, of which Joash is a contraction. (Comp. Jehoram-Joram.) The meaning may be “Iahu is fire (comp. Isaiah 33:14); but more probably it is “Iahu is a man.” (Comp. Ashbel.)

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 2 Chronicles 24:1

CHAPTER XXIV Joash begins to reign when seven years old, and reigns well all the days of Jehoiada the priest, 1-3. He purposes to repair the temple of God; and makes a proclamation that the people should bring in the money prescribed by Moses, 4-9. They all contribute liberally; and the different artificers soon perfect the work, 10-13. The rest of the money is employed to form utensils for the temple, 14. Jehoiada dies, 15, 16. And the people after his death become idolaters, 17, 18. Prophets are sent unto them, 19. And among the rest Zechariah the son of Jehoiada, who testifies against them; and they stone him to death, 20-22. The Syrians come against Jerusalem, and spoil it, 23, 24. Joash is murdered by his own servants, 25, 26. His acts, 27. NOTES ON CHAP. XXIV Verse 1. Joash was seven years old] As he was hidden six years in the temple, and was but seven when he came to the throne, he could have been but one year old when he was secreted by his aunt; see on 2 Chronicles 22:10.

Ch. 2 Chronicles 24:1-3 (= 2 Kings 11:21 to 2 Kings 12:3). Joash begins to Reign 3. And Jehoiada, etc.] This ver. is not in Kings. It was the duty of a Jewish father to provide his son with a wife; Jehoiada standing in loco parentis does this for Joash.
